Profit booking, Trump tariffs deadline weigh Indian stocks; Sensex down 288 points

India Gazette4 days ago
New Delhi [India], July 2 (ANI): India stock benchmarks continued to remain in the red after the latest rally, in what analysts attribute it as profit booking by investors.
Besides, analysts opine uncertainties around extension in Trump reciprocal tariffs beyond July 9, and a India-US bilateral trade agreement weighed on the Indian stock indices this week.
Today, the benchmark indices witnessed profit booking at higher levels, said Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities
The Nifty ended 88 points lower, while the Sensex closed 288 points lower.
Among sectors, Metal index outperformed, rallied 1.41 percent, whereas the Realty index lost the most, shedding 1.44 percent.
'Technically, after a muted open, the market has been consistently facing selling pressure at higher levels,' Chouhan added.
According to Vikram Kasat, Head - Advisory, PL Capital, 'Indian benchmark indices closed sharply lower on Wednesday, July 2, as concerns over US trade policy and weak global cues weighed on sentiment...Markets are in a cautious mood, buffeted by U.S. tariff uncertainty and Fed policy readability. Domestic strength remains limited to select themes--metals, durables, and fresh IPO gains.'
Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said, 'Mixed global cues, particularly ahead of the impending tariff deadline, are driving investor caution. Market attention is gradually shifting to crucial Q1 earnings, which have high expectations. Underlying trends such as robust macroeconomic fundamentals and increased government expenditure continue to support market resilience. However, being at the breach level of the recent rally, a cautiousness is expected to continue in the near term.'
Last week, Indian stock indices stayed in the green for the fourth straight session, lending support from positive global cues, relative peace on the Israel-Iran conflict front, and hopes of a possible extension of the July 9 tariff deadline by the US administration.
India's strong domestic fundamentals, a responsive RBI, and good monsoon conditions have been supporting the financial markets. US markets are hitting all-time highs, and the US dollar is weakening; as a result, emerging markets like India are benefiting.
A comfortable inflation number in India also somewhat supported the domestic equity indices recently.
In 2024, Sensex and Nifty accumulated a growth of about 9-10 per cent each. In 2023, Sensex and Nifty gained 16-17 per cent, on a cumulative basis. In 2022, they gained a mere 3 per cent each. (ANI)

What is America Party? Elon Musk's new political front amid fallout with Trump; vows to fight debt, waste and two-party control

Elon Musk , the world's richest man and until recently a close adviser to US President Donald Trump , has announced the formation of a new political party called the America Party. The move follows a dramatic split between the two over Trump's controversial tax-and-spending bill, which Musk says will bankrupt the country. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO made the announcement on his social media platform, X, on Saturday, just a day after Trump signed what he called his 'big, beautiful' bill into law. Musk, who had previously threatened to create a new party if the bill passed, wrote, 'Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.' 'Independence from the two-party system' According to Musk, the new America Party will aim to be a fiscally conservative force focused on reducing government waste. In a poll he shared with his followers on X, more than 65 percent of 1.25 million respondents voted 'yes' to the creation of the party. 'Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system!' he posted. Musk claims the 'uniparty' will improve on the shortcomings of both Democrats and Republicans. In a follow-up post, Musk added: 'By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party, and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.' 'Serve the true will of the people' Although Musk did not immediately provide details about the legal structure or leadership of the America Party, he did outline an initial strategy. 'One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,' he wrote. 'Given the razor-thin legislative margins, that would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring they serve the true will of the people. ' 'Put Doge on Elon': Trump The billionaire's criticism of the bill reignited tensions with Trump, which had appeared to cool after Musk previously deleted harsh posts about the president. However, the feud returned in full force as the bill neared approval. Musk had warned that he would fund primary challenges against every lawmaker who supported the bill. 'Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head to South Africa,' Trump said on Truth Social, referring to Musk's country of birth. The president also told reporters in Florida, 'We might have to put Doge on Elon. Doge is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn't that be terrible.' Is a third party viable in US? Despite the announcement, experts say creating a strong third party in the US is very difficult, according to CNN. By law, a new party doesn't have to register with the Federal Election Commission unless it starts raising or spending money on federal elections. So far, no such records exist for the America Party. In the past, third-party efforts in the US have had a hard time gaining support. A well-known example was billionaire Ross Perot's 1992 presidential run. He got nearly 19% of the popular vote but didn't win any Electoral College votes. Musk was one of Trump's largest financial backers during the 2024 presidential race, spending an estimated $277 million to support his campaign. He was rewarded with a leadership role in the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which oversaw sweeping budget cuts across federal programmes. While Doge claimed to have saved $190 billion, a watchdog group estimated the abrupt cuts may have cost taxpayers $135 billion in the long run.

‘Half way through our journey to become a global airline by 2030:' IndiGo CEO Elbers

NEW DELHI: 'I know the opportunity is huge. The only thing I don't know is how huge.' This is what co-founder Rahul Bhatia had three years back told Pieter Elbers, then KLM president. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now That was the time the domestic market leader had set its sight on spreading its wings in the international skies. Last week, IndiGo started its first flights to the UK and Europe using wet leased (hired with pilots) wide body planes and will now grow its long hauls aggressively. After Jet Airways' collapse in April 2019, Air India was the only Indian carrier with twin aisle aircraft in its fleet for nonstops across the world. 'You find Indian travellers all over the world. But for very long, (a vast majority of them) have been deprived the opportunity to fly an Indian operator,' Elbers, who joined IndiGo as CEO in Sept 2022, told TOI after the inaugural Mumbai-Amsterdam flight touched down in his home country. In the last 2.5 years, Bhatia and Elbers have been executing a strategy to change this. Asked where is the airline in its plan to become a global airline by 2030, he said, 'We're half way through. ' The post-Covid travel boom made desi carriers realise they needed to get a bigger slice of the international travel pie to and from India. This was enabled by the mega Tata Group acquiring Air India & AI Express in Jan 2022 and well-capitalised IndiGo deciding to replicate its domestic success in international skies along with a big boost in the country's airport infra. 'The fact that we are touching down now in Europe is a big thing because of a number of firsts for us — flying long haul, serving hot meals and having stretch on international flights. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now So it is much more than just two new destinations in Europe. It is the start of a very new chapter in the book of IndiGo. When IndiGo started in Aug 2006, Rahul Bhatia had a certain vision and he created that (making IndiGo India's biggest domestic airline),' Elbers said. Three years back when he met Elbers, Bhatia started making moves to replicate IndiGo's domestic success in the international market too. Their ambitions were on the same trajectory as that time Elbers was looking to be part of something that had the potential become really big. 'All the things we have been doing (since 2022) were building blocks to making IndiGo a global airline. These steps are not just individual or random. They are all part of a holistic plan.' These 'building blocks' include starting Stretch (or business) on some domestic flights since last Nov 'we have some experience in serving serving (premium) customers when we go to Europe. The loyalty programme was started to have corporates and SMEs on board,' he said. The focus on internationalisation comes from an aspirational India's prowess as an economic giant with a booming GDP, middle class and spending power. 'When IndiGo was was created 18 years ago, there was a vision and there was a relentless execution of that vision. What we see now (international growth) is, I believe, a bit similar to what we had seen then.' IndiGo currently has one wet leased Boeing 787 from Norse Atlantic which is being used on the Mumbai - Amsterdam and Manchester routes. It will get three more B787s this calendar year and then two early in 2026. The Dreamliner routes announced so far include London and Copenhagen. The airline expects to start getting its single aisle Airbus A321XLR (extra long range) from this year which will be used for routes like Athens, Delhi-Bali and southeast Asia. The closure of Pakistani airspace meant Mumbai got the first two flights to Europe as flights between Delhi and the west are much longer these days. When the Pakistan airspace opens, Delhi will also get flights. 'You have seen our network over the past few years. How we expanded at both Delhi and Mumbai. And even Bangalore and Hyderabad. We're not a single hub operator. We have multiple origins — Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore. They all have their own kind of focus areas, and and even even natural flows.' IndiGo has 30 wide body A350s on order whose induction will start in 2027. Given the fact that aircraft delivery delays continues due to supply chain constraints, will IndiGo wet lease more wide bodies to augment its international capacity. 'We are not ruling out any opportunity or any chance. We keep looking and keep evaluating options,' Elbers said. IndiGo has seen a large number of its Airbus A320 grounded for years due to Pratt & Whitney engine issues. The peak aircraft grounding number on this count was 79 and the same is down to 30s. Then post Covid supply chain challenges meant slower deliveries of everything right from planes, engines, seats, components and parts. 'Overall, we still have supply chain challenges. But our big order book (IndiGo was yet to receive 916 of the ordered Airbus planes as of last month) helps us average out deliveries. I don't want any delays, but the reality is what it is. I still hope and am cautiously optimistic that we'll have our first A321XLR before the end of this calendar year,' he said. While North America is on IndiGo's radar, the CEO says he will first like to 'make sure that we are well positioned in Europe. There still are parts of Asia where we don't have any operations like Japan, Korea. And there's Australia too. With our partners Delta and, we will connect passengers to 20 North American cities (from Amsterdam),' he said.
