North Island tourism operators 'move beyond competition' with new alliance
More than 60 tourism operators will highlight the North Island's tourism hotspots like Rotorua at an Australian showcase later this year.

North Island tourism leaders are banding together in a new alliance, in a bid to get more visitor's boots on the ground and into the regions.
The Memorandum of Understanding has been signed at the Auckland Airport Tourism Forum in Rotorua, ahead of this week's TRENZ tourism business conference.
The partnership involves three airports and 15 regional tourism organisations.
Auckland Airport chief customer officer Scott Tasker said regions were already competing against overseas destinations to attract visitors, so this would be a more coordinated approach to promote the North Island as a destination.
"The goal behind that is to encourage more visitors to explore more of the North Island, to spread around and to stay longer and increase their spend across our regions, and that's about shifting visitors from perhaps fly-in, fly-out into deeper more rewarding journeys across regions," Tasker said.
This partnership - which was the first of its kind for North Island regional tourism organisations - would combine their insights, networks and marketing and use their collective pulling powers to entice more travellers, he said.
They would target the Australian, US and Chinese visitors markets.
Later this year, more than 60 tourism operators will connect with Australian travel sellers across the ditch at a North Island showcase.
Total visitors arrivals had recovered to more than 80 percent of pre-pandemic levels in the year to December.
Auckland Airport had seen an 11 percent increase in overseas visitor arrivals year-on-year to last December, and overall, the airport had recovered to about 84 percent of pre-pandemic levels.
Tasker said they were trying to close that gap and their goal was for the country's total visitor arrivals to be back at pre-Covid levels by the end of summer 2026, he said.
Tātaki Auckland Unlimited destination director Annie Dundas said this partnership helped them to strengthen their international presence.
"The travel landscape is changing, and we need to be smarter about how we show up overseas to sell our respective regions," she said.
"This partnership allows us to be clearer in our proposition, which in turn will make it easier to meet the needs of our travel partners overseas and ultimately future travellers."
RotoruaNZ chief executive Andrew Wilson called the partnership a "bold and necessary step forward".
"By working together, we move beyond competition and into collaboration - showcasing the sheer breadth of experiences available in our part of Aotearoa, from coastlines to culture, from wellness to adventure," he said.
Auckland Airport chief executive Carrie Hurihanganui said the tourism industry was still in recovery mode and a little bit behind compared to the rest of the world.
While she was confident the industry would catch up, she said it was going to take a collaborative approach
"The reality is that we're operating in a highly competitive market for airline seat capacity and as a long haul destination we need to make sure that as a tourism sector we're working together to drive traveller demand," she said.

Taranaki Tourism Experiences Encouraging Long-Term Growth
Despite volatile short-term growth, the Taranaki tourism sector continues to outpace national trends, reporting a 3.9% uplift in tourism expenditure over the past five years based on the latest economic insights from Infometrics, sitting above the relatively flat national average of 0.7%. The sustained long-term growth highlights the region's resilience and appeal as a destination of choice, despite short-term fluctuations in visitor numbers and a tough domestic market. "Short term year-on-year data needs to be considered alongside the broader context of long-term trends to ensure we get the full, and correct picture. Looking across the last five and even ten years, it's pleasing to see that Taranaki is performing well, especially compared to the national average and some of the main centres," Flutey comments that tourism, like most sectors is a mid-long term game and success doesn't come over night. "While external factors can cause volatility year-on-year, the long-term data shows Taranaki is increasingly becoming a destination of choice, particularly as we see a continued shift in behaviour with visitors seeking out off-the-beaten-path destinations," Flutey adds. Over the same 5-year period, Auckland experienced a decline in tourism expenditure of -0.7%, Otago decreased -1%, and Gisborne, a relatively comparable region, saw a more modest increase of 2.8%. "The domestic market has been particularly challenging, with households feeling the pinch, and a reduction in business and corporate travel fuelling short term performance." Despite this, the mid-to-long-term sector outlook is encouraging. "Tourism continues to present a strategic growth opportunity for the region, with our businesses and communities looking to strengthen and diversify our economy." This sustained growth is particularly pleasing for Regional Development Agency and Tourism Organisation, Te Puna Umanga Venture Taranaki, who's role it is to engage in significant tourism growth-focused activity on behalf of the region alongside the sector and industry partners. "Over the last five years, we've been strategic and purposeful as to where we put our energy, and how we show up in market. From domestic visitor campaigns aimed at boosting off-peak arrivals, to the development of targeted promotions in the Australian market to build awareness with our largest international visitor arrivals. "Visitor trade has also played a key role in our approach, ensuring we prioritise key visitor trade events and initiatives, attending the likes of TRENZ, the largest tourism trade buyer-seller event in the southern hemisphere." Daniel Fleming, Co owner/General Manager, King & Queen Hotel Suites comments, "We've seen a steady rise in the number of international guests coming through our doors particularly from the American markets, who are uncovering all that our region has to offer." "There's great vibrancy building across the region, with a growing calendar of events, rich cultural experiences, a glowing dining scene, and strong collaboration happening across the tourism sector. We know tourism is a long-term game, and it's exciting to see this momentum gaining pace." The recent bumper summer of major events has also reinforced the value of hosting large-scale events for the region's economy and visitor appeal, with the latest data confirming a collective $67 Million boost in economic impact for the region. Independent economic impact reports from the region's stacked summer line-up, including TSB Festival of Lights, two Summer at the Bowl concerts, Americarna, WOMAD, and Te Matatini o Te Kāhui Maunga, show that these six events attracted over 72,000 visitors from outside of the region, helping to drive over $48 Million in direct visitor expenditure. Americarna alone, attracted 34,600 guest nights and contributed $11M in visitor expenditure to the local economy over just four days of classic American car celebrations. "Major events are an effective lever to drive visitation and cultural vibrancy, helping to shine a spotlight on Taranaki as a must-visit destination for new and returning visitors, and providing far-reaching benefits from sold-out accommodation, to increased demand for transport, retail, and hospitality," Flutey says Despite a 6.3 % drop in visitor expenditure for the quarter end to March 2025, the long-term growth and future potential of the Taranaki tourism sector remains clear, as the sector looks to continue to build on its success to date. "In the immediate term we are well placed to continue to capitalise on stage one of the Government's Tourism Growth Roadmap as they invest in demand generation activities to drive international visitor attraction, and there's a lot more opportunity around the corner for us yet, with Central Government having already committed to supporting international campaign activities, and various projects and events," concludes Flutey.

COVID-19 Fraud Sentencing
An Auckland woman was sentenced to home detention on charges of defrauding three government schemes set up to help companies adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns. Emma Jane Dentice entered a guilty plea and was sentenced on receiving and fraud charges when she appeared in the Waitakere District Court on June 27, 2025. Dentice was sentenced to 6 months home detention, a sentence which allows her to care for her elderly mother. In April 2020, the Government announced a new Small Business Cashflow Loan (SBC) scheme with applications open from 12 May, 2020. That month, an associate of Dentice's accessed the myIR account of a company using the login details of a former director of the company, and applied for a SBC loan. $11,800 was put into Dentice's bank account. She withdrew nearly $2,000 and spent it. The rest was transferred to another of her bank accounts. In February 2021, the Government introduced the Resurgence Support Payment (RSP) scheme to provide grants to businesses that were adversely affected by the raise in COVID-19 alert levels. In September 2021, Dentice applied for a RSP but was turned down because she didn't meet the criteria. In 2022, the Government introduced the COVID-19 Support Payment (CSP) to help support viable and ongoing businesses or organisations which experienced a 40 per cent or more drop in revenue as a result of COVID-19 circumstances. Dentice applied for a CSP in March 2022 but it too was declined because she didn't meet the criteria. The SBC, RSP and CSP schemes were implemented under urgency using a 'High Trust' application model to ensure eligible businesses could access funds to support the business in a timely manner. Dentice was not entitled to any of the money she applied for. Her offending was premeditated, spanned a 2-year period and was motivated by personal gain.

Property v Bitcoin: Exploring which is best for Kiwi investors
Rather than place the burden on the state (taxpayers), they put their own finances on the line in the hope rising prices justify the risks. Unfortunately, returns with property don't arrive in straight lines, and the last four years are a great case study in what can go wrong. When property prices stall and a seven-year itch kicks in, instead of prices doubling, we start questioning the asset class like a doubting spouse. But what are the options? What's better than property? Bitcoin? Despite its volatility, Bitcoin offers digital scarcity and can serve as a component of a broader savings strategy. Image / Getty Images Isn't that a scam? I first heard about Bitcoin in 2012 when it was worth around $1. Initially, I wrote it off as 'fake internet money', and then I wrote it off as a scam, a failed experiment, and finally only something only criminals used. 'I'm smarter than that,' I thought, but one Bitcoin is worth more than US$100,000 ($164,700) today, so apparently not! After a bit more research, I concluded there's far more crime committed at the end of a rolled-up $20 bill than there is with Bitcoin. If you're buying something dodgy, cash is way better than a public blockchain that displays your transactions 24/7. A bit more research later, I reluctantly realised this was engineered digital scarcity, money that could exist outside a bank and beyond national state control. Could this become a type of money useful for a digital world? I went on to discover that most cryptocurrencies are more like digital start-ups, each trying to solve different problems, but Bitcoin was different. It was born amid the fallout of the Global Financial Crisis and it carried with it a mission: 'Fix the money, to fix the world.' I'll have a bit of that, thank you very much. Property v Bitcoin: which is the 'better' investment? Everyone takes their own sweet time, but eventually, the question pops up: 'Which is better?' I have to be honest: the real question shouldn't be about the investment, it should be about the investor. How long are you willing to invest? How much volatility can you stomach? Are you chasing capital gains or cashflow? Once you know what you're building, only then should you choose the tools. Property has traditionally been a go-to investment for building wealth, thanks to leverage and possible tax-free gains. Photo / 123RF Some of us should consider Bitcoin, some should consider property and some should do both. If you're able to save a deposit, property's still a great way to take a pile of money and watch it grow. Banks have a great business model here. They provide leverage, tenants help with cashflow and, for now, your capital gains might even be tax-free. What's not to like? Well ... the Sunday call about a rat infestation that turns out to be three-week-old raw chicken in the pantry? The stained carpets, the missed rent, rising interest rates, and council taxes? Meanwhile, Bitcoin just sits there. No cashflow – just cryptographically secured digital scarcity. That's it. The dirty secret Property's tough to beat on a good day, don't get me wrong, but there's a secret bank economists dare not declare: New Zealand's housing market thrives because of inflation … of the money supply. Every time the Government, businesses and everyday people need to borrow, banks create new money from nothing and inflate the economy with more units of currency. More money chases the same amount of stuff for sale, and prices naturally climb. Yes, immigration, a tight labour market and limited supply all play a part in growing house prices, but it's nothing compared to the truth. Property wealth is the side effect of exploiting the 'credit creation process'. Choosing between property and Bitcoin comes down to how you want to grow and protect your money. Photo / 123rf Wonder why a duplex can double in value every decade? Consider the rate at which new currency floods the system. New Zealand is a housing market with an economy bolted on. Banking is what props our economy up. As long as this sounds like kooky conspiracy stuff, property investment will continue to work well. At some point, however, the vibe can shift. What would happen if there's no longer a generation willing to buy the houses of the one that went before them? How much Bitcoin should you buy? Property investment works because banks create infinite money that we can use to buy physical scarcity. Bitcoin works because you can take your own money right now, and trade it for digital scarcity. So, how much? As a general guide, take everything you own, subtract the value of your home, then subtract everything you owe, then multiply what's left by between 1% and 10%. If you see Bitcoin as an 'investment', that's your range. Buy well, not blindly—how much? Start with what you truly own, subtract what you owe, and invest wisely within your means. Unlike shares, bonds or property, Bitcoin is a form of money that, despite its volatility, can be considered part of a savings strategy. Unlike cash, which loses roughly half its purchasing power every 25 years, Bitcoin can rise in value as infinite money finds a home in it. So, to increase your purchasing power over time, saving Bitcoin, instead of speculating with it, could be the way to go. If you feel you really understand it, you may consider holding more and might even sell investment properties to get more of it. Stick to property or try Bitcoin? If you're okay with extreme price swings, you're investing for at least 10 years, and there's already some wealth behind you, Bitcoin could be an option for how you want to grow and protect your money. If you want the stability and options property gives you, stick with the asset you can live in. Personally, I use both. For me, it's not about the tools; it's what I'm trying to build. Make your own decision, but I can't help but suggest maybe buying a little, just in case it catches on.
