Four Haryana residents, in their 20s, were killed and another was injured after their car collided with a cement-laden truck early on Sunday morning in Dehradun, police said. Every year, over 1,000 road accidents are reported in Uttarakhand, with the treacherous, winding and narrow roads on the mountainous terrain often exacerbating the danger. (HT File)
Authorities have detained the truck driver for questioning.
'The accident took place at around 3.10 am. The white colour Maruti Ritz car, bearing registration number HR 42 E 2701, was coming from Saharanpur to Dehradun.
It collided with the truck bearing registration number HR63F 5353 from the rear near Asha Rodi under the jurisdiction of Clement Town police station,' said Ajai Singh, Dehradun senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ajai Singh.
'Due to the collision, all five travelling in the car received serious injuries. They were rushed to Doon Medical College and Hospital and Coronation (district) hospital, where four of them were declared dead by doctors,' he said.
The SSP further said that the deceased were identified as Ankush, Paras, both residents of Sonepat district; Ankit, a resident of Jind district, and Naveen, a resident of Rohtak district in Haryana.
The survivor was identified as Vinay, a resident of Sonepat district, who is undergoing treatment at Doon Medical College and Hospital, he said.
'We have informed the families of the deceased and injured and further action will be taken upon their arrival. We have seized the truck and detained its driver, identified as Aftab (27), a resident of Saharanpur district in Uttar Pradesh, for questioning,' Singh added.
Every year, over 1,000 road accidents are reported in the state, with the treacherous, winding, and narrow roads on the mountainous terrain often exacerbating the danger.
This issue is particularly acute during the monsoon and winter seasons, when poor visibility makes already challenging journeys even more hazardous. With the goal of reducing road accidents by 50% by 2030, the cabinet chaired by Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on February 12 approved the Road Safety Policy, 2025.

Satish was also arrested along with his two associates, Vikki Kumar and Ashish Kumar. Police recovered a country-made pistol, two cartridges, an empty cartridge, a mobile phone and a bike. Fake AI-generated video triggers political row in Rudrapur

Rudrapur: Former BJP MLA Rajkumar Thukral on Sunday reported an AI-generated video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which was widely circulated in US Nagar's Rudrapur ahead of the panchayat elections on July 24. The doctored clip shows Modi endorsing Amita Biswas, a district panchayat candidate. Thukral filed a complaint with SSP Manikant Mishra, alleging that "Amita's husband, Jagdish Biswas, created and shared the video to sway voters and gain an unfair advantage." Calling it a criminal offense and a violation of the Model Code of Conduct, Thukral said, "This is a deliberate attempt to malign the image of the PM and mislead the public. Such actions must not go unpunished." He also reported the incident to the PMO for investigation and urged police to file an FIR and take strict action.

(Getty Images/iStockphoto) On July 23, the minor girl was allegedly abducted, raped in a moving car and later dropped back near the spot from where she was picked up near Metro Mall on VIP Road, Zirakpur, police said on Friday. The incident took place around 8 pm, when the girl, who works at a salon, was walking back home in Zirakpur. The women commission directed that the SSP should entrust the probe to a senior officer and a report on the outcome be submitted to the panel by July 28. Victim's brother witness in extortion case: Family On Saturday, the victim's family alleged that she was targeted as her brother was appearing as a witness in an extortion case registered in July 2024 against some persons, who are behind the bars. Those behind the sexual assault are their accomplices, they alleged. The girl claimed the accused knew her brother's contact number and called him when she was in their captivity and driven around. 'They called him and told him not to go to the police,' she said, further claiming that she had a call recording also to prove that. Their counsel, advocate Malkit Kaur, also confirmed the same. But Zirakpur SHO Satinder Singh claimed that the victim's family was not cooperating with police in the investigation. 'We have made several attempts to contact them, but they are not turning up. Despite repeated requests, they have not shared the phone number from which the threatening call was received,' he said. Zirakpur SP and Mohali SSP did not respond to the calls and texts by HT. According to the victim, two unidentified men turned up at the spot in a car and forced her into the vehicle. While driving around, they assaulted her, and took her to a forest area near Tribune Chowk in Chandigarh and then to Mohali's Phase 11. While repeatedly taking her brother's name, they raped her. After the sexual assault, the accused dropped her back at the same place from where they had picked her up, as per FIR. Following a complaint by the girl's mother, a case under Sections 64 (rape) and 3 (5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Section 6 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered at the Zirakpur police station against the two unidentified accused.
