NetApp Report Highlights Fierce Competition in Global AI Leadership
NetApp® (NASDAQ: NTAP), the intelligent data infrastructure company, today released its new report, The AI Space Race , examining which countries are leading the fierce global competition to become the world leader in AI innovation. While some countries are further ahead than others, this survey of CEOs and IT executives in the U.S., China, the U.K., and India found that every player has the potential to thrive in the global race for AI dominance.
AI is no longer optional for business, and the region that leads the world in AI innovation will be well-positioned to be a technological superpower, and drive potential benefits like economic growth, improved quality of life, and global political influence in the years to come. Successfully fueling AI innovation requires organizations to prepare their data to make it accessible, secure, and scalable—wherever it lives—to produce trusted and valuable outcomes.
'In the 'Space Race' of the 1960's, world powers rushed to accelerate scientific innovation for the sake of national pride. The outcomes of the 'AI Space Race' will shape the world for decades to come,' said Gabie Boko, CMO at NetApp. 'The companies and regions that can get their data ready for AI will be able to generate differentiating business insights and unlock operational efficiencies that launch them ahead of their rivals. Intelligent, scalable, secure data infrastructure is a decisive factor as the global competition drives businesses to solidify their AI ambitions and understand how they translate into a true, lasting advantage.'
The AI Space Race is Still Anyone's Game
When asked what region is best positioned to lead AI innovation in the long term, respondents from every country overwhelmingly pointed to the U.S. (43 percent).
However, everyone sees themselves as AI ready, and every region views themselves as competitive in the global AI innovation race. The report shows that 81 percent of global respondents are currently piloting or scaling AI, while 88 percent view their organization as mostly or completely ready to sustain AI transformation. The massive investment in AI innovation around the globe shows that everyone is working to become the world leader in AI innovation. However, some countries are working harder than others, with respondents from India (29%) and UK (32%) reporting that they feel extra pressure to compete as China and US are seen as clear leaders. With all this fierce rivalry and active investment, the field is wide open for any country to achieve that goal.
Driving the global differences in the state of AI innovation are diverging priorities in how it is implemented. Respondents in China put a much greater focus on scalability with 35 percent ranking it as a top capability—11 percent higher than the global average—suggesting a focus on rapid deployment to make an early impact. By contrast, leaders in the U.S., U.K., and India put a greater emphasis on integration with existing systems. This long-term strategy to enable sustained AI growth may result in greater business value in the future, though the short-term approach may drive more immediate results.
Aligning Business Ambitions and Technology Reality
While organizations are focused on turbocharging AI innovation, CEOs and IT leaders need to be aligned on the state of their technology environments and plans to drive long term success and leadership.
In China, the survey indicates there is a critical misalignment between Chinese CEOs and IT leaders on both AI readiness and actual deployment, which could hinder its long-term leadership potential: 92 percent of Chinese CEOs report active AI projects, compared to just 74 percent of Chinese IT leaders. In the United States, alignment is stronger—77 percent of CEOs and 86 percent of IT leaders say the same. Perceptions of AI readiness are also misaligned. While 68 percent of Chinese CEOs consider their organizations AI-ready (versus 62 percent globally), only 58 percent of their IT counterparts agree (versus 72 percent globally). In the United States, CEO and IT readiness is more closely aligned at 60 percent and 61 percent, respectively. These differences suggest that internal alignment—not just ambition—may shape how AI strategies are executed, depending on region and role.
However, concerns about the quality of results from AI projects have the potential to slow down innovation if they are not addressed. Globally, 79 percent of respondents reported a fear of broken models and biased insights resulting from poor data and cloud strategies. Businesses that want to tap into the opportunity of AI innovation will need strong data governance strategies to serve as the foundation for their digital transformation.
'One of the most significant success factors in the AI Space Race will be data infrastructure and data management, supported by cloud solutions that are agile, secure and scalable,' said Russell Fishman, Senior Director, Product Management at NetApp. 'Winning organizations will be those that recognize that they require an intelligent data infrastructure in place to ensure unfettered AI innovation. This is critical no matter the company size, industry or geography. As organizations around the world embrace AI at scale, NetApp is there to help them extract maximum value from their data by creating an AI ready data infrastructure that unifies, manages and harnesses their data for optimal AI outcomes.'
The AI Space Race is just getting started, but the organizations that can move the fastest will lead in AI innovation. The fierce competition highlighted by this report shows that businesses need to find an edge that will help them leverage AI securely and efficiently to stay a step ahead of their peers, no matter how fast the race evolves. Adopting an intelligent data infrastructure offers organizations unparalleled flexibility and agility to move into the cloud when needed, scale AI workloads seamlessly, reduce costs, and quickly adapt to evolving business needs. As AI increasingly moves from generating content to taking action, businesses need security that starts with the data itself. Only an intelligent data infrastructure delivers a full chain of trust, empowering enterprises to move fast, without compromising control.

Barclays bullish on Kimco, Federal Realty as it launches coverage of retail REITs
-- Barclays starts coverage of retail REITs, rating Kimco Realty (NYSE:KIM) and Federal Realty Investment Trust (NYSE:FRT) Overweight while it was Equal weight on Regency Centers (NASDAQ:REG), Phillips Edison, Simon Property Group (NYSE:SPG) and Tanger. The brokerage said investors appear to be overpaying for the perceived defensiveness of certain grocery‑anchored portfolios, yet Kimco itself offers a cheaper way to own that theme. Barclays said New York‑based landlord is a large cap, high‑quality, diversified 'proxy' for grocery‑anchored shopping centers, trading at a modest discount to peers and set for about 5% funds‑from‑operations (FFO) growth next year. Federal Realty, whose high‑end shopping districts span U.S. coastal markets, has lagged rivals since the pandemic but is shifting capital toward lower‑risk acquisitions and more modest redevelopments, the note said. While Regency, Phillips Edison, Simon and Tanger all look fairly valued, the broker wrote. Regency carries a three‑turn premium to the sector on forward FFO, Phillips Edison still trades above peers despite shrinking returns on recent acquisitions, and both Simon and Tanger face apparel‑heavy tenant rosters that could be squeezed further if tariffs rise. Barclays' sector outlook favours companies with strong balance sheets and improving free‑cash‑flow profiles, and is wary of REITs chasing FFO growth through acquisitions after a sharp compression in shopping‑center cap rates. While consumer spending and tariff risks loom, Kimco and Federal Realty still screen as the best risk‑reward ideas in a retail landscape adjusting to slower economic growth. Investors, the bank cautioned, should remember that 'investors may be overpaying for the perceived defensiveness of certain grocery‑anchored portfolios.' Got $200? 2 Biotech Stocks to Buy and Hold Forever
Good news for investors: You don't have to start out with tons of cash to grow wealth. Biotech stocks offer you a great opportunity to get in on innovators that may produce major growth down the road. 10 stocks we like better than Viking Therapeutics › Some potential investors hesitate to get started on building an investment portfolio because they think they need thousands of dollars to grow wealth. But I've got good news for them and for you: You don't have to start out with a huge pile of cash to invest in stocks that may significantly add value to your portfolio over time. In fact, with just $200, you can get in on players that could help you along the path to wealth. The industry of biotech is a great place to look for such stocks since so many of these companies are developing cutting-edge technologies that may lead to high-growth products, and revenue, down the road. Let's consider two that you might buy today -- a few shares of each for a total of $200 -- and hold forever to benefit from lasting growth stories. Viking Therapeutics (NASDAQ: VKTX) aims to make its mark in one of today's (and tomorrow's) biggest healthcare growth areas: weight loss drugs. The biotech company is developing a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist, known as VK2735, and has progressed into late-stage clinical trials. The candidate, in injectable form, just launched its phase 3 program and aims to enroll more than 4,000 participants with obesity and more than 1,000 volunteers with obesity and type 2 diabetes. VK2735 works by interacting with hormonal pathways involved in the control of appetite and blood sugar levels, much like the already commercialized Mounjaro and Zepbound, sold by Eli Lilly, and Ozempic and Wegovy, sold by Novo Nordisk. But the fact that similar drugs have reached the market first doesn't mean Viking can't succeed here. Demand for these sorts of products has been so high that it exceeded supply, until Lilly and Novo Nordisk increased manufacturing capacity. So there's plenty of room for a young company like Viking to succeed here too if all continues to go well in clinical trials. Viking also is testing VK2735 in oral form in a phase 2 trial, an important point since oral formulation could make these drugs easier to take, and it involves faster and cheaper manufacturing processes for the company. Data from that trial is expected later this year. Viking stock is known to soar on positive results. It surged more than 120% last year in just one trading session after reporting positive phase 2 data for VK2735. It's since given up the gains, offering investors a solid entry point, but any good news and a possible regulatory nod could prompt the stock to skyrocket. Moderna (NASDAQ: MRNA) used to be a favorite of investors during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic -- but since, it's had trouble bringing investors back into its potential growth story. The stock has lost more than 90% since its peak back in 2021, and the company has reported decreasing sales because of the drop in demand for its coronavirus vaccine and lower-than-expected sales of its more recently launched respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine. After Moderna's billions of dollars in revenue and profit just a couple of years ago and recent earnings declines, investors may find it difficult to get excited about Moderna again. But it's important to remember two things: First, it's unfair to compare revenue potential during ordinary times to revenue linked to a pandemic-related product. Those were exceptional times that don't occur often. Second, the approval of Moderna's coronavirus and RSV vaccines show that its technology -- the technology driving the rest of its pipeline -- works. The company now has many late-stage products in the works and aims to launch as many as 10 over the next few years. If Moderna even makes it partially to that goal, its revenue picture a few years from now may look very different from the picture today -- and set the company up for long-term growth. It's too early to predict when the market will recognize this and flock to Moderna shares. But at today's level, the stock offers investors a buying opportunity, making it a great place to park part of your $200 and hold on for the long-term as this growth story develops. Could Google's Veo 3 be the start of playable world models?
Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google's AI research organization DeepMind, appeared to suggest Tuesday evening that Veo 3, Google's latest video-generating model, could potentially be used for video games. In response to a post on X beseeching Google to 'let me play a video game of my veo 3 videos already,' and asking, 'playable world models wen?' Hassabis responded, 'now wouldn't that be something.' On Wednesday morning, Logan Kilpatrick, lead product for Google's AI Studio and Gemini API, chimed in with a reply: '🤐🤐🤐🤐' Both posts from the Google executives are little more than playful suggestions, and a Google spokesperson told TechCrunch the company had nothing to share at the moment. But building playable world models isn't outside the realm of possibilities for the tech giant. now wouldn't that be something… — Demis Hassabis (@demishassabis) July 2, 2025 World models are different from video generation models. The former simulates the dynamics of a real-world environment, which lets agents predict how the world will evolve in response to their actions. Video gen models synthesize realistic video sequences. Google has plans to turn its multimodal foundation model, Gemini 2.5 Pro, into a world model that simulates aspects of the human brain. In December, DeepMind unveiled Genie 2, a model that can generate an 'endless' variety of playable worlds. The following month, we reported that Google was forming a new team to work on AI models that can simulate the real world. Others are working on building world models — most notably, AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li. Li came out of stealth last year with World Labs, a startup that has built its own AI system that generates video game-like, 3D scenes from a single image. Boston, MA | REGISTER NOW Veo 3, which is still in public preview, can create video as well as audio to go along with clips — anything from speech to soundtracks. While Veo 3 creates realistic movements by simulating real-world physics, it isn't quite a world model yet. Instead, it could be used for cinematic storytelling in games, like cutscenes, trailers, and narrative prototyping The model is also still a 'passive output' generative model, and it (or a future Veo generation) would need to shift to a simulator that's more active, interactive, and predictive. But the real challenge with video game production isn't just impressive visuals; it's real-time, consistent, and controllable simulation. That's why it might make sense to see Google take a hybrid approach that leverages Veo and Genie in the future, should it pursue video game or playable world development. Google could find itself competing with Microsoft, Scenario, Runway, Pika and, eventually, OpenAI's video-generating model Sora. Given Google's planned moves in the world models space and its reputation for using its deep pockets and distribution muscle to steamroll rivals, competitors in this space would be wise to keep a close watch.
