Back in April 1984, Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, India's first man in space, had returned aboard the Soviet Soyuz T-10 capsule. His landing site was the sprawling and marshy fields of Arkalyk in Kazakhstan. His mission had taken him to the Soviet Salyut 7 space station.
His return was noisy, turbulent and almost jarring. But it was historic. And it raised a question as to why did one astronaut return to land and the other to sea?
The answer is a blend of spacecraft design, logistics, safety calculations and national strategy.
A Safe Touchdown or a Splash?
Ocean landings, what engineers call 'splashdowns', are often the first choice for missions returning to the United States. SpaceX's Dragon, like Apollo missions before it, lands in the ocean. The water cushions the impact. It also provides a massive natural buffer zone. Debris from the spacecraft's trunk is jettisoned before reentry, falling harmlessly into the ocean instead of onto populated land.
But even splashdowns have their risks. Earlier this year, chunks of a discarded Dragon trunk were found across remote areas of Australia and Canada. Luckily, no one was harmed. The incident proved that even the ocean is not foolproof.
Landing on solid ground, on the other hand, may look simpler but it is far from it. Boeing's Starliner did just that in 2024, gliding to a touchdown at the White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico.
Russia and China have preferred land landings for decades. Their capsules come down in vast and controlled stretches of wilderness like Kazakhstan or Inner Mongolia.
The benefits? Easier recovery, lower cost and no need for naval support.
The risks? A harder landing. More shock to the body. Especially for astronauts re-adapting to gravity after days or weeks in orbit.
Spacecraft Design Dictates Landing Style
Spacecraft are not one-size-fits-all. Each vehicle is engineered with a specific reentry plan. Whether it is Russia's Soyuz, China's Shenzhou, SpaceX's Dragon or Boeing's Starliner, the choice of landing site is built into the capsule's very bones.
In Shubhanshu Shukla's case, a splashdown made sense. SpaceX missions are designed for water landings. The Pacific Ocean provides flexibility, comfort and recovery access. The crew's safety comes first. Recovery vessels wait in position, and helicopters are often deployed to reach the crew within minutes of touchdown.
But for the Soyuz capsule that brought back Rakesh Sharma, a parachute-guided descent onto hard land was the norm. That mission ended in the semi-frozen earth near Arkalyk, a desolate stretch where generations of Soviet cosmonauts had landed. The rugged Kazakh steppe has long been used for such operations, its openness reducing the risk to nearby populations.
A Veteran Remembers
Rakesh Sharma opened up in 2024 about that return to earth. Speaking to PTI, he had described the raw and jarring final moments of reentry.
'The return was more dramatic than expected. There was a point when I thought it might not go as planned. And suddenly, the parachute opened. There was a lot of noise. More than we were prepared for,' he had said.
It was a reminder. Reentry is not a routine a descent. It is survival.
Space, Then and Now
From Sharma's Soviet capsule in 1984 to Shukla's SpaceX Dragon in 2024, much has changed. Technology has evolved. Private players have stepped in. Comfort and control have improved. But one thing has not changed – earth is still a hard place to return to.
For Shubhanshu Shukla, the sea offered calm and precision. For Rakesh Sharma, the earth offered resilience and tradition. Two astronauts. Two eras. Two very different journeys back home.

In 1852, Indian mathematician Radhanath Sikdar, working for the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, discovered that this mountain is the highest in the world, measuring 8,849 metres. He reported his findings to Andrew Scott Waugh, who four years later named the peak after Everest, considering it a fitting tribute to the former Surveyor-General. George Everest himself opposed this decision. Radhanath Sikdar, who joined the Great Trigonometrical Survey immediately after college, initially named the peak 'Peak-15" around 1850, when the heights of mountains were being measured. Until then, Kanchenjunga was considered the highest peak. Kanchenjunga, located on the border of Nepal in the north-western part of Sikkim, stands at 8,586 metres and is the third highest peak in the world. It wasn't until 1865 that it was confirmed Mount Everest is the highest peak. Why Was Radhanath Sikdar's Name Missing From The Survey Records? There was once a debate over what name should be given to the world's highest peak. Many felt it deserved a local name, but the British rejected the idea and named it after one of their own officers-Everest. Radhanath Sikdar, the Indian mathematician who first calculated the height of the peak in 1852, was not even credited in the official survey manual. Who Was Radhanath Sikdar? Radhanath Sikdar was born on October 5, 1813 in Kolkata (then Calcutta) and was always interested in mathematics. After college, he secured a permanent job in the Great Trigonometrical Survey with a salary of Rs 30 per month, considered substantial for Indians at the time. George Everest kept assigning Radhanath Sikdar more responsibilities. According to a Times of India report, he once even referred to Radhanath as his 'right hand." Andrew Scott Waugh continued Everest's work and tasked Sikdar with measuring Everest's height, which Sikdar achieved without visiting the peak, reporting his findings in 1852. After Everest's retirement, Andrew Scott Waugh took over the post. Radhanath Sikdar was then assigned the task of measuring the height of the peak. Remarkably, he calculated that it was the world's highest mountain without ever setting foot on it. He submitted his findings in 1852, but the British made it official only four years later as they were initially reluctant to trust the data. Who Was Sir George Everest? Sir George Everest was born in England and received his education at the Royal Military College in Buckinghamshire. In 1806, he joined the East India Company as a cadet and was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Bengal Artillery the same year. He soon left for India, where he began working on the Bengal survey alongside Colonel William Lambton. His skill and dedication impressed Lambton, the head of the Great Trigonometrical Survey (GTS), who appointed him as his chief assistant. After Lambton's death in 1823, Everest succeeded him as the Superintendent of the Indian Survey Department. In 1830, he was promoted to Surveyor General of India. This is true for even civilisations The moment when the countdown clock struck 'T-0" will be forever remembered as the day when India renewed its pledge to expand its influence beyond the earthly realm of human habitation. This epochal moment has been a long time in the making. 41 years, to be precise, since an Indian soared into space. The hiatus, never explained, can only be described as a shocking abdication of collective self-belief. Nations that stop innovating, regenerating, and reimagining themselves fade into history. This is true for even civilisations. But Shubhanshu Shukla's liftoff has the potential to change the way India views itself. His surge into space gives wings to a renewed national quest for an unearthly, pun intended, pace of advancement needed for world domination. One hopes the inheritors of India's present will feel inspired to succumb to the tug of awe-inspiring science that makes the impossible possible. And just in case someone didn't get the message hardcoded into the symbolism, Shukla has taken the additional precaution of scripting a message to leave no room for any ambiguity about the reasons for the mission. Symbolism aside, Shukla's mission has important practical uses. The first-hand experience he gains will be needed to help India build its own manned spaceflight. Every scrap of lived experience is immeasurably more valuable than a line in an instruction manual. It's this gold dust of first-hand knowledge that convinced the minds at ISRO to fund Shukla's ride into space aboard the Axiom mission rocket. Shukla's stint on the ISS is just as important. While he will have the time to soak in the view and make friends, every nook and cranny of the ISS mapped by his mind's eye will offer valuable design insights to ISRO. Remember that the Indian space agency is not just wanting to send a crewed mission to space, but it also wants to set up Indian bases in low orbit and, most critically, on the Moon and beyond. The establishment of living quarters is a crucial motive, as the next quantum leap in national advancement will be powered by metals and elements rare on Earth but abundant in space. India cannot afford to be left behind in the race to plant flags on the scape of extraterrestrial colonies that promise to yield the materials needed by aspiring powers to grow beyond their dreams.
