State-level vape bans misdirected, says ex-Sarawak top cop
PETALING JAYA : The authorities should focus on taking down the syndicates behind narcotics-laced vapes instead of penalising the legal vape market, says former Sarawak police chief Yusoff Nook.
In a statement today, he said recent calls for state-level bans were misdirected as they did not address the 'real source of harm'.
'These products are not sold by licensed players. They're sold online by criminals operating in the shadows.
'State-level bans on vape shops won't stop this. If anything, they punish the visible and regulated segment of the market while doing nothing to touch underground networks,' he said.
Yusoff called on the authorities to instead act against drug syndicates under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2001, with stronger criminal enforcement, targeted raids, and cross-border intelligence sharing.
Calls for nationwide and statewide bans emerged in recent months after deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said vapes had become increasingly linked to the abuse of new synthetic drugs.
Terengganu and Perlis banned vape sales from Aug 1, joining Johor and Kelantan which imposed their own bans in 2016 and 2015 respectively.
Perak aims to follow suit in October, while the other states are still considering the matter. The Pahang government has moved to ban the use of vapes as a whole.
Segamat MP R Yuneswaran also urged the government to impose a nationwide ban, citing 'alarming' data and mounting concerns that inaction could lead to long-term health crises and an overwhelmed public healthcare system.
Yusoff said licensed retailers adhered to the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024, which strictly regulates product registration, price approvals, and retail licensing.
'Licensed players are subject to inspections and oversight. The ones flooding our streets and social media with narcotic vapes? They are not part of that system. They are traffickers.
'Let's stop conflating legal vaping with narcotics. This is a criminal abuse of a product, not a failure of regulation or the industry,' he said.

Cops cripple major drug syndicate operating from the north

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the simultaneous operations by the Bukit Aman narcotics criminal investigation department also saw the seizure of a huge amount of heroin base and heroin, with an estimated total value of RM4.13 million. He said police arrested the first suspect after intercepting a car parked by the roadside at USJ 19/4 in Subang Jaya, Selangor. They found 14.52kg of heroin base and 920g of heroin hidden in a bag inside a specially concealed compartment behind the rear passenger seat. 'The next raid was at a house in Seri Kembangan, Selangor, where the second suspect was arrested and 22.55kg of heroin base seized from the premises. 'The third suspect was detained at an eatery in Permatang Pauh, Penang, which then led to the inspection of a nearby house where police discovered 7.456kg of heroin base,' Bernama quoted him as saying today. Hussein said the suspect arrested in Penang is believed to be the mastermind of the syndicate, which had been active since early last year. He said the mastermind sourced drugs from a neighbouring country and handed them to the other two suspects, who transported the drugs from Penang to the Klang Valley, earning up to RM4,000 a trip. 'Heroin base is the 'mother' of drugs, being the raw form that is later processed into various grades of heroin and sold at higher prices,' he said. The first and second suspects have been remanded for five days starting July 13, while the third suspect is under a six-day remand. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking.

Too early to decide on Nick Adams's nomination as US envoy, says Anwar
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government will give the nomination of Nick Adams due consideration and, at the same time, maintain good ties with Washington. PUTRAJAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says it is premature for the government to decide on whether to approve conservative political commentator Nick Adams as the next US ambassador to Malaysia. Anwar said Putrajaya is following the proper protocol in considering foreign ambassadorial appointments. 'It is still too early (to decide),' he told reporters after Friday prayers here. 'Of course, the government will give it due consideration. At the same time, we will maintain good relations between Malaysia and the US.' US president Donald Trump has nominated Adams as Washington's new ambassador to Malaysia. His nomination will need to be confirmed by the US senate before he can assume the role. While no date has been set for the senate vote, Adams is expected to be approved as the Republican-held senate has backed every Trump nominee since he became president in January. Adams's nomination has faced opposition from former law minister Zaid Ibrahim and former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who said Malaysia has every right under the Vienna Convention to reject the appointment without providing a reason. Zaid described Adams as a 'right-wing agitator and partisan provocateur' who is unfit to serve as a US ambassador because of his lack of diplomatic credentials. Adams previously criticised alleged efforts to 'teach Islam in schools'. Known to be a staunch supporter of Israel, he has said that those who expressed solidarity with Palestinians supported terrorism. Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar said accepting Adams's nomination will be seen as an insult to the country's Muslim community and Malaysians who support Palestine. PKR Youth today submitted a memorandum of protest to the US embassy over the nomination.

2 suspected loan sharks nabbed over Penang arson case

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Two suspected members of a loan shark syndicate have been arrested in connection with a fire that destroyed three houses in Tasek Gelugor, Penang, on June 24. Penang deputy police chief Alwi Zainal Abidin said the men, both in their 20s, were detained by the state commercial crime investigation department in two separate raids in Penang on July 3. They are also suspected of being involved in a paint vandalism incident at a house in Tanjung Tokong on June 30. 'The raids led to the seizure of several items, including a motorcycle, a pair of sport rims, a helmet, mobile phones, a sling bag and clothing belonging to the suspects. 'During interrogation, both suspects admitted to their involvement in the case of arson that destroyed three double-storey terrace houses,' Bernama reported him as saying. He said investigations also revealed the suspects' involvement in five other paint-splashing cases currently being investigated. The fire on June 24 broke out at about 4.50am at Taman Tasek Gelugor Utama, causing losses estimated at RM300,000. Five cars and four motorcycles were also damaged. One of the victims later claimed on Facebook that the fire was related to loan shark activities and was possibly meant to target another house in the area. A homeowner had reportedly received a warning letter demanding repayment of a debt, but was not residing in any of the three houses that were set on fire.
