Food quality testing lab inaugurated at Tirumala
Speaking on the occasion, the TTD Chairman said that earlier, samples had to be sent to other States to test the quality of items like prasadams and ghee. But now a lab has been set up at Tirumala itself with state-of-the-art equipment to conduct tests directly.
TTD EO Syamala Rao said that till now there was no facility to test the quality of ghee at Tirumala, and now for the first time, equipment like GC (Gas Chromatograph) and HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatograph) have been installed, which have the ability to instantly analyse the adulteration and quality percentage of ghee.
He said that the equipment worth Rs 75 lakh was donated by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) of Gujarat.
Adding further he said that the lab staff and potu workers have undergone special training at CFTRI in Mysore and henceforth arrangements have been made to check the quality of the prasadams in this lab and provide the results immediately.
TTD Board members Santha Ram, Sadasiva Rao, Naresh, Additional EO Ch Venkaiah Chowdary and CE Satya Narayana, Deputy EOs Bhaskar, Somannarayana and other officials participated in the programme.

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Tuesday handed over AI-based reading devices to students of a school for the hearing and visually impaired near here, allowing them access to printed, handwritten and digital content. 'Real progress happens when innovation meets compassion, and when no one is left behind,' Khandu said, as he distributed the 'KIBO' devices to students of the Donyi Polo Mission School for the Hearing and Visually Impaired at Chimpu. 'With KIBO, our children can now access printed, handwritten and digital content on their own, in their own language, and at their own pace,' he said. The school was established in 1990 by former chief minister Gegong Apang. Recognising its contribution to inclusive education, the state government had recently enhanced the school's annual grant-in-aid to Rs 2 crore and announced a Rs 5-crore corpus fund to ensure long-term sustainability, officials said.

Telangana gets two new CoEs for critical minerals research
HYDERABAD: In a major boost to scientific innovation in Telangana, the Central government has approved two Centres of Excellence (CoEs) for critical minerals research in Telangana. These centres, to be established at IIT-Hyderabad and the Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC), will function under the Union Ministry of Mines and focus on advancing research vital for sectors such as clean energy, defence, electronics, and space technology. According to Union Ministry of Mines, the announcement comes as part of the Union government's broader initiative to promote critical mineral development under the Rs 16,300 crore National Critical Mineral Mission, launched in January. This mission aims to reduce India's dependence on imports and secure raw material supplies essential for futuristic technologies. An additional Rs 18,000 crore will be mobilised from public sector undertakings (PSUs) to support this effort. The seven CoEs being established across India include four at IITs, including Hyderabad, Bombay, Dhanbad and Roorkee, and three at key research institutes, including CSIR-IMMT (Bhubaneswar), CSIR-NML (Jamshedpur), and NFTDC (Hyderabad).

Rajkot Campus powers startups to make global impact
Bengaluru, Aug 5 (UNI) In a bold display of how academic institutions can become launchpads for innovation and entrepreneurship, a Rajkot-based university has successfully funded over 190 innovation projects, investing more than Rs 5 crore in grants. This initiative has led to the incorporation of over 45 startups, with several already generating market revenue. The university's innovation ecosystem, driven by its incubation and research support systems, was showcased during a recent interactive session where students, alumni, and faculty presented breakthroughs across biotechnology, healthcare, agritech, and smart mobility. "This is not just about academics; this is about real-world transformation,' said Marwadi University Provost Dr RB Jadeja, addressing a delegation of journalists from Bengaluru. 'We've created a launchpad for innovation where even undergraduates can think like founders.' Among the standout innovations is a pioneering melanin-dependent Drosophila (fruit fly) model developed by PhD researcher Karthik. Designed for testing fungal infection treatments across different skin tones, the model addresses limitations in conventional drug testing that typically overlooks melanin's role in infection resistance. Her project, backed by the university's EMU fellowship, state-of-the-art labs, and expert mentorship, is now moving toward ethical clearance and commercial pilot testing. Ruchita, a 2023 alumna, has developed a Spirulina-based food startup aimed at tackling malnutrition. With an annual revenue of ₹4 lakh, her business operates from office space provided on campus. By collaborating with interns from diverse fields such as marketing and microbiology, her venture promotes a peer-driven culture of entrepreneurship. A team of alumni has introduced biodegradable sanitary pads made from wheat, barley, and rice stubble — agricultural waste often burned in northern India. Their product, free of plastic and customizable, has already been patented in India and the UK. It degrades within nine months and offers a hygienic alternative to plastic-based or poorly maintained reusable products. Ravi Kanjariya, a master's student in physiotherapy, showcased "TiltRobe", a balance training device designed for pediatric and elderly patients. The board features adjustable amplitude and stable platforms to reduce fear during therapy. The device is set for deployment in over a dozen physiotherapy centers, with university support for rollout and feedback collection. Third-semester student Rohan Pathak presented a low-cost vehicle authentication system that integrates facial recognition, fingerprint verification, and licence scanning. Designed to curb underage and unauthorised driving, the Raspberry Pi-powered system slows the vehicle if it detects an unregistered driver. Looking ahead, the university is planning a self-sustaining model by sharing revenue with successful startups and tapping into Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding. "Out of Rs 8,600 crore spent in CSR across India, only 0.86 percent goes to innovation and entrepreneurship. We aim to change that,' Dr Jadeja said. While only 3 per cent of startups globally succeed, the university is working to reverse the odds by creating a nurturing environment that supports the entire lifecycle of innovation—from ideation and incubation to commercialisation and scale. Dr Jadeja said he expects 2026 to be a defining year, with many startups moving into the growth phase. With a growing network of student and alumni innovators, researchers, and market-ready prototypes, the Rajkot campus is quietly transforming into a powerhouse of grassroots innovation.
