Barbarella, London E14: ‘A large scoop of Lady Gaga does House of Gucci' – restaurant review

The Big Mamma group's gargantuan, flamboyant, frothily decorated pleasure palaces, which have grown rapidly across London – from Gloria in Shoreditch to Circolo Popolare in Fitzrovia and from Avo Mario in Covent Garden to Jacuzzi in Marylebone, among others – not to mention across Europe in general, tend to cause earnest food sorts to sigh wearily. If the lofty scofferati could have found a way to scupper Big Mamma's growth, they probably would have, because these restaurants are unashamedly focused on big, sexy, silly and Italian-inspired fun. The dining rooms are styled with the chaotic yet elegant detail of a big-budget movie set; no two are remotely the same, but each branch is connected by dependably over-the-top Italian serving staff, usually male and every one of them determined to be your best friend all the way from the antipasti to the dolci, even if your stiff British mentality fights their displays of chumminess.
The latest Big Mamma opening, Barbarella in Canary Wharf, east London, is no different, and features all of those elements with which we've become so familiar: the tall, wobbly lemon meringue pie, the camp banquettes, the huge flappy menu with 100-plus items all written in Italian and in a teensy-tiny red font. At Barbarella, there are also oversized sculptures, vintage Fiorucci in glass display cases and, vibe-wise, a large scoop of Gaga does House of Gucci.
Why are clever food people so sniffy about Big Mamma, despite its restaurants being full to the brim every night? Well, there are two reasons: first, Barbarella and her sisters are determinedly fun; almost forced fun, if we're completely honest. Just try telling your server that you're not here to have a laugh, but instead have come for a sparse, sensible, calorie-counting meal, so there's no need for a double martini or to be spooned tiramisu from a huge bowl by a winking man from Sicily called Gianluca. They just won't understand you. The second, and possibly more logical reason for the raised eyebrows is because – let's cut to the chase – the food in all of these restaurants isn't always terribly good and is sometimes actively awful.
Not that you'll ever cajole any of the staff into admitting that: 'This tiramisu is my favourite tiramisu in the world, even better than my own nonna's,' is just one line directed at me at Barbarella. The staff simply cannot break character, so all the pasta is, according to them at least, 'freshly made this hour' and 'better than they serve in the village I come from in Italy'. Every T-bone steak is the juiciest and every brunello on the extensive wine-list is the most thoughtfully sourced. You've more chance of seeing Mickey Mouse at the front of a Disney parade with his headpiece off and smoking a Marlboro than hear a Barbarella server admit that this food is just OK – and hugely overpriced, too.
Not that you'd really want that, either. Barbarella, like all of these places, is about escapism, boisterous group dining and being swept up in the moment, with someone else – a lover, a boss, a father-in-law – hopefully picking up the hefty bill afterwards. Lunching here stone-cold sober is a real eye-opener. I've only ever been to a Big Mamma restaurant while a bit tipsy, but here I'm being served a £24 plate of 'millefoglie di patate con tartare di manzo e tartufo', or a sort of cold fried potato rösti with a spoon of unseasoned beef tartare that's not remotely delicious. A courgette and cheese insalata limps on to my table hoping for love, but it's another hopeless state of affairs. This is not good courgette, these are not pleasant croutons.
Next up, lobster linguine for £36 in a thick, one-note bisque sauce and with half a lobster on top – fine, but nothing earth-shattering. A £38 fillet steak with green peppercorn sauce is by some distance the most delicious thing we eat, and comes with a side of actually great rosemary potatoes. Then again, it's also probably the least Italian thing on the menu. But the tiramisu is, as ever, rich, thick, cocoa-covered and comes with that timeworn trick of offering a second scoop to denote largesse.
Upstairs is the place to sit, it being the room with all the movie-star glamour; downstairs is, dare I say, a little less exciting. But, from my seat by the till (not somewhere I wanted to linger) and having to move plates about to make them fit on a tiny table that's about as big as one of the pizzas, there's just something about Barbarella that left me a little cold. Perhaps glamour isn't supposed to be practical. The wild Italian party continues in Canary Wharf regardless, but I don't think I'll be running back for a scoop of gelato any time soon.

Children's author Allan Ahlberg dies aged 87

Allan Ahlberg, the author of the children's classic Funnybones, has died aged 87. Ahlberg was known for creating beloved children's books with his first wife Janet, with their scores of titles including The Jolly Postman, which sold more than six million copies. Publisher Penguin Random House confirmed the death of the author, who enjoyed a 50-year writing career. Colleagues said Ahlberg was still revising the cover art for his books a week before his death. Francesca Dow, director of children's books at the publishing house, hailed him as 'extraordinary' and said his work would be 'loved by children and families for years to come'. Ahlberg had worked as a postman, a plumber's mate and a grave digger before a writing career began unexpectedly after he met Janet Hall, who would become his first wife. She was an illustrator who had become frustrated with the quality of the books she was being sent to work on, and requested that Ahlberg attempt to write something better. That resulted in the 1975 book Here are the Brick Street Boys, which would be the first of many collaborations. These included Funnybones, about a family of skeletons, which was adapted into a children's TV series aired on the BBC. Janet Ahlberg died in 1994, and Mr Ahlberg published several tributes to her, including Janet's Last Book, which included many of the illustrator's previously unseen pictures. In 2014, Ahlberg made headlines for refusing lifetime a achievement award because it was sponsored by Amazon. The author took issue with the company's record on tax, and turned down commendation at the Booktrust Best Book Awards because Booktrust had been supported financially by the tech giant. He said at the time: 'When companies like Amazon cheat – paying 0.1 per cent on billions, pretending it is earning money not in the UK, but in Luxembourg, that's a bad thing. 'We should surely, at the very least, say that it is bad and on no account give it any support or, by association, respectability. The idea that my 'lifetime achievement' should have the Amazon tag attached to it is unacceptable.' Ahlberg later worked with other illustrators, including his daughter, Jessica, who helped create a pop-up version of the Goldilocks tale. He is survived by Jessica, his wife Vanessa, and stepdaughters Saskia and Johanna. Belinda Ioni Rasmussen, the chief executive of the children's publisher Walker Books Group, said of her time working with Mr Ahlberg: 'Allan once told us that when his daughter asked him for a story, she would request 'one straight out of your mouth'. 'Over the years, many at Walker were truly privileged to hear stories straight from Allan's mouth. He was enormously playful in spirit and language and had the ability to make you smile in one sentence. Allan inspired generations of children's writers, inspired all of us who worked with him, and inspired artists to make some of their very best work.' The publishing house put out his last picture book, Under the Table, in 2023.

Jamie Lee Curtis stunned in an elegant red cape dress as she continued her promotional tour at the ODEON Luxe in Leicester Square, London. Fans had long hoped for a sequel to the iconic comedy but had an agonising wait as Freakier Friday is only now hitting cinemas. Now, Jamie Lee has revealed why there was such a long gap between the two releases as she admitted she has long had her eye on a follow-up movie. Appearing on Wednesday's The One Show, Jamie revealed they had to wait until Lindsay, 39, was old enough to have a teenage child for the sequel premise to work. 'The truth is that Lindsay had to be old enough to have a 15-year-old daughter, people would ask me about the movie over and over again,' she shared. 'And finally someone in Australia said, ''well she is'' and I was like ''what do you mean?'' because I know her as this young girl so I don't know how old she is. 'So someone told me and I was, like ''Oh! well maybe we can make the movie. Let's go!''' Lindsay was just 15 years old when she first portrayed Anna Coleman in Freaky Friday alongside Jamie Lee, who played her on-screen mother Tess Coleman. It follows the bickering mother and daughter after a Chinese restaurant fortune cookie mishap causes them to switch bodies, forcing them to live the other's life. Despite barely having been able to see eye-to-eye, the magical switch eventually allows them to see things from the other's point of view. The sequel will see the iconic pairing switch places once again, though this time there is quadruple chaos in store. Anna (Lindsay) is preparing to tie the knot with to Eric Davies (Manny Jacinto), but things are proving difficult as her teenage daughter Harper (Julia Butters) despises Eric's teenager Lily (Sophia Hammons). Harper highlights her disgust as she's heard reciting mock wedding vows, in which she brands her soon-to-be step-sister 'a little demon thing with an obnoxious accent'. A flash forward to Anna's bachelorette party sees her and mother Tess Coleman sit down with a fortune teller (Vanessa Bayer), who warns them they may learn another lesson by 'walking in each other's paths'. Fans had an agonising wait for a sequel as Freakier Friday is only now hitting cinemas 22 years later, with Jamie Lee revealing it was because of Lindsay's age Anna and Tess then find themselves caught up in yet another 'freaky' body swap incident - only this time, it's not just between the two of them. The next morning, Anna discovers she's swapped bodies with daughter Harper, while Tess, aka 'Grandma', is now in the body of Anna's step-daughter Lily. Quadruple chaos then ensues as the foursome try to navigate their new roles with just days to go until the wedding. Chad Michael Murray is also returning to his role as Jake as the two teenage girls also hatch a plot to try and get Anna to reunite with her first love amid the wedding chaos.

A BELOVED children's author who wrote over 150 books has died aged 87. Allan Ahlberg produced a host of bestselling nursery classics during a stellar career as an author. 1 Belinda Ioni Rasmussen, CEO of Walker Books Group, which published some of his books, said: "He was enormously playful in spirit and language and had the ability to make you smile in one sentence. "Allan inspired generations of children's writers, inspired all of us who worked with him, and inspired artists to make some of their very best work.' He came to writing in his late thirties, when his wife Janet grew tired of illustrating non-fiction and asked him to write a story for her to illustrate. Allan later recalled the moment was "as if she turned a key in my back and I was off". The Ahlbergs went on to produce 37 books together, and Allan also wrote more than 100 others, some in Janet's lifetime, and some since her death from breast cancer in 1994. Their collaborations included such lasting favourites for the very young as Peepo!, The Baby's Catalogue and Each Peach Pear Plum. Following Janet's death Allan worked with illustrators such as Raymond Briggs and Bruce Ingman. His career came full circle in a series of collaborations with his daughter Jessica including Half a Pig and a pop-up set of anarchic variations on the tale of Goldilocks.
