Competition heats up in quick commerce as Amazon takes on Zepto, Blinkit with 10-min dash

Time of India14-07-2025
Amazon
's launch of
10-minute delivery service
,
Amazon Now
, in Delhi following its debut in Bengaluru, has heated up the
quick commerce
space, which is already marked by fierce competition among
Blinkit
,
Zepto
, and
Swiggy Instamart
, making India one of the few markets globally where ultra-fast delivery is thriving.
A report by ICICI Securities in April this year, in fact, had talked about how quick commerce platforms are building deep-habit loops, are no longer confined to speed and snack-led occasions, and structurally reshaping retail behaviour through high-frequency engagement and curated category expansion.
Amazon has begun its ultra-fast delivery service 'Amazon Now' in select pin-codes in Delhi with "curated selection of everyday essentials"; the 10-minute delivery service was launched in Bengaluru in December last year.
'Amazon Now' tab now appears within the app in select pincodes it is available in, and the company intends to launch the offering in other cities soon.
Amazon 10-minute delivery service covers daily essentials including groceries, fruits and vegetables, personal care and beauty products, wireless accessories, small appliances. Orders with minimum value of Rs 99 for Prime users, and Rs 199 for non-Prime users are delivered free of charge.
Market watchers believe that app-based quick commerce platforms have cracked the code when it comes to recreating the convenience and familiarity of shopping at local kirana stores. Amid fast paced lifestyles and busy work schedules, they offer customers online stacks of a diverse choice of products and, of course, the ease of doorstep delivery.
Moreover, quick commerce boom is riding on the India's smartphone penetration, low data costs, and predominantly young demographics.
According to a report earlier this year by Flipkart and Bain and Company, more than two-thirds of all
e-grocery orders
and one-tenth of e-retail spends happened on quick commerce platforms in 2024, underlining how QCom is revolutionising the way consumers buy in India.
Jefferies, in a recent report, had noted that the quick commerce has indeed become mainstream and entry of horizontal platforms like Flipkart and Amazon is more out of force as the users and their share of wallet have been rapidly moving to quick commerce platforms.
"The market in some pockets may get cluttered, as in certain places, there may be as many as six different quick commerce platforms, with some trying to woo users via aggressive discounts. Specifically, on Amazon, we think these are early days and the offering needs to have enough scale in terms of coverage to be a meaningful player in the overall Q/C (quick commerce) market.
"This may require serious effort including burn given Amazon lacks brand recall for Q/C unlike incumbents - currently, Q/C is part of main Amazon app while experience suggests higher traction in case of verticals like Blinkit (
Swiggy
too has launched separate app for Q/C)," Jefferies had said in a note in June this year.
Indians, it is estimated, ordered goods worth Rs 64,000 crore from quick-commerce platforms like Blinkit and Instamart in Financial Year 2024-25, more than double from the previous fiscal year's Rs 30,000 crore. The gross order value (GOV) is estimated to grow more than three times to touch Rs 2 lakh crore by FY28, the report by one of the arms of domestic rating agency Careedge Ratings said.
Another report by Datum Intelligence, pegged the quick-commerce market size at a staggering USD 40 billion by 2030, a jump from USD 6.1 billion in 2024.
That said, despite its strong growth and promising prospects, quick commerce has courted its fair share of controversies, including regulatory scrutiny from the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) over issues such as food safety lapses, claims, and compliance gaps.
Late last year, the
consumer protection regulator
issued notices to several companies for failing to comply with mandatory product disclosure requirement. The notices were issued to 3-4 quick commerce companies for violations related to packaged product disclosures - the law requires online and offline retailers to display key product information, including maximum retail price, expiration date, weight, manufacturer details, and consumer grievance addresses on packaged goods.

Cheaper cancer care therapy earns big bucks for pharma company

India's cell and gene therapy pioneer ImmunoAct has turned profitable in its first full year of operations, a rare feat in the country's emerging startup landscape where research-based pharma enterprises encounter serious scale and cash flow challenges. ImmunoACT, in which Hyderabad-based drugmaker Laurus Labs has roughly 34% equity stake, saw revenues of ₹62 crore with a profit before tax of ₹12 crore in FY25, according to sources. The year before, ImmunoAct had revenues of ₹11 crore. Founded by immunologist Rahul Purwar in 2013, ImmunoACT was spun off from the department of bioengineering department of IIT Bombay in 2018. ImmunoACT's NexCAR19 is the first indigenously developed breakthrough cancer CAR-T (chimeric antigen receptor T-cell) therapy approved by India's central drug regulatory agency in October 2023. NexCAR19 was formally launched in India in April 2024 at a price ~90% cheaper than its US and European counterparts like Novartis and Gilead, making it far more affordable for India and low-and-middle income countries, on its potential approval. So far, the therapy has been infused in over 350 patients across 70 hospitals in India. In CAR-T treatment, the patient's immune cells are extracted and through a maze of re-engineering processes infused back to recognize and kill cancer cells, giving a longer remission to patients as compared to the conventional options like immunotherapy or bone marrow transplants. The therapy is used when all other options are CAR-T dose (one-and-done infusion) costs around ₹30 lakh, which was initially priced at ₹42 lakh, and is expected to see a further decline as demand picks ImmunoACT has recently appointed former managing director of Roche India V Simpson Immanuel as its strategic Purwar added, "We needed someone who understands not just the commercial landscape, but also the nuances of innovation, patient access, and global expansion." Earlier this year, Immuneel Therapeutics, backed by leading names like Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and globally renowned oncologist Siddhartha Mukherjee secured approval for Qartemi, its cell therapy for adult B-cell non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, in India. Companies like Cipla, Dr Reddy's Labs and Bharat Biotech are investing heavily in new CAR-Ts. Globally, CAR-Ts are at the frontiers of a range of cancer treatments, attracting billions of dollars in investments from large drugmakers. The market for such therapies is expected to touch $134 billion by 2034 from around $10 billion at present.

Global Vijayawada diaspora joins hands to uplift ‘golden families' under P4 scheme

Vijayawada: In a major boost to NTR district's fight against poverty, people from Vijayawada who have settled across the globe are stepping in to support the P4 (People–Public–Private–Partnership for Poverty Reduction) scheme. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Nearly 900 Non-Resident Vijayawadians (NRVs), known for their active involvement in social service across Andhra Pradesh, are now being encouraged to mentor vulnerable families back home. Recognising their success stories and philanthropic spirit, the NTR district administration is tapping into this global network to assist 'Bangaru Kutumbams' (Golden Families) — economically weaker households identified for upliftment under the P4 policy. Taking this initiative forward, District Collector Dr G Lakshmisha recently held a special meeting with a group of NRVs and members of the PB Siddhartha College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Association at the Collectorate. "NRVs are ideal partners in this mission. They've seen success across the world and are now ready to give back to their roots. The P4 policy is a path to eliminate poverty by 2029 by connecting the top 10% of society to uplift the bottom 20%," the collector said. He added that 86,398 golden families have already been identified in the district, of which 30,617 families have been adopted by 3,897 volunteer guides. The administration now hopes that more NRVs will join hands in guiding these families in skill development, employment, self-employment, and access to health services. NRVs including P Suresh, Y Manidhar and Harshasai pledged their involvement in the initiative. P B Siddhartha alumni members Swaroop, A Prashant Chowdhury, G S C Bose, and Sumabindu Atluri also assured their support. Collector Lakshmisha emphasised that this global-local partnership will not only combat poverty but also enhance Vijayawada's identity as a city of entrepreneurship, culture, and compassion.

Wall St Week Ahead-Tariffs, Fed, tech results headline jam-packed markets week

(Repeats SCHEDULED COLUMN originally published on July 25, no changes) Aug 1 deadline looms for US trading partners Fed policy decision Weds, US jobs report Fri Results due from Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta NEW YORK, July 25 (Reuters) - A looming U.S. deadline for more severe global tariffs is among a barrage of upcoming events threatening to disrupt an increasingly calm U.S. stock market that has set a string of all-time highs. President Donald Trump has extended a deadline to August 1 for when higher levies will take effect on an array of trading partners unless deals are struck. That could boost market volatility heading into next Friday. Much more is on the calendar that could move markets. Investors will watch the Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting, the monthly U.S. employment report and earnings reports from megacap companies Apple, Microsoft and Amazon. "There is going to be a lot to digest for markets into next week," said Matthew Miskin, co-chief investment strategist at Manulife John Hancock Investments. "Expectations from the markets have gone up relative to several months ago," Miskin said. "So it's just going to be another big week for trying to meet loftier expectations." RECORD HIGHS, FALLING VOLATILITY The benchmark S&P 500 kept tallying new all-time highs during the week. Equities have recovered from a plunge after Trump's April 2 "Liberation Day" tariff announcement set off fears of a recession that have since ebbed. The S&P 500 has surged 28% since its low for the year a week later, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite has jumped 38% in that time. "We just got three years of return in three and a half months," said Chris Galipeau, senior market strategist at the Franklin Templeton Institute. "The equity market needs to consolidate this move." Market volatility measures have eased considerably. The Cboe Volatility Index spiked to 60 in April, but has been below its long-term median of 17.6 for most of July and on Wednesday posted its lowest close in five months. However, pockets of volatility have emerged in the past week. Eye-popping gains in highly shorted stocks such as Kohl's and Opendoor Technologies heralded the possible return of a "meme stock" craze that could signal some over-exuberance in risk appetite, at least among retail investors. Meanwhile, the record-setting rally has lifted valuations to historically expensive levels. The S&P 500 was trading at 22.6 times earnings estimates, well above its long-term average P/E ratio of 15.8, according to LSEG Datastream, which could make the market vulnerable to disappointments in the coming week. Higher tariffs on the European Union and many other countries could take effect on August 1. Trump had paused many of the most severe of his reciprocal tariffs in April, following the bout of extreme market volatility. "There is a particular belief and conviction that the market has that the administration just won't be as aggressive as they've been threatening because of what was experienced in early April," said Kevin Gordon, senior investment strategist at Charles Schwab. "The next hurdle in the trade (situation) is really to see what sticks." FED OFFICIALS AWAIT TARIFF IMPACT The Fed is widely expected to hold interest rates steady in its monetary policy decision on Wednesday, as central bank officials want more data to determine if tariffs are worsening inflation before they ease rates further. But tensions between the White House and the central bank over monetary policy have heightened, with Trump repeatedly denouncing Fed Chair Jerome Powell for not cutting rates. Two of the Fed Board's Trump appointees have articulated reasons for supporting a rate cut this month. A packed week of corporate results includes Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook parent Meta Platforms, four of the "Magnificent Seven," whose stocks heavily influence benchmark indexes because of the companies' massive market values. With about 30% of S&P 500 companies having reported results, overall second-quarter earnings are on track for a 7.7% increase from a year ago, according to LSEG IBES. That would beat a 5.8% estimated rise on July 1. The week ends with the monthly U.S. employment report on Friday. Employment in July is expected to have increased by 102,000 jobs, according to Reuters data as of Thursday, after rising by 147,000 jobs in June. "We've had relatively strong economic data that almost shows a modest re-acceleration in the economy in June and I think markets are priced to reflect this re-acceleration," Miskin said.
