Brazilian hiker's family criticises speed of Indonesia rescue effort

JAKARTA - The family of a Brazilian hiker found dead in Indonesia days after a fall climbing a volcano have criticised the rescue effort as too slow, before authorities carry out an autopsy on June 26 to find out the time of her death.
Ms Juliana Marins, 26, went missing on June 21 at Indonesia's second-largest volcano, Mount Rinjani, located on Lombok island.
Attempts to evacuate her were hindered by challenging weather and terrain after authorities spotted her unmoving body with a drone.
Rescuers finally reached her body on the evening of June 24 after a days-long effort and evacuated her a day later.
Her family has claimed Ms Marins could have been saved if she was reached within hours rather than days.
'Juliana suffered severe neglect by the rescue team. Juliana would still be alive if the team had gotten to her within the estimated time of 7 hours,' her family wrote late on June 25 on an Instagram account that has amassed over one million followers.
'Juliana deserved so much more! Now we are going after justice for her, because it's what she deserves.'
In a social media post on June 26 , her family thanked 'the volunteers who bravely' helped to finally retrieve her body.
Head of Indonesia's rescue agency Mohammad Syafii said on the evening of June 25 he had met with Ms Marins's family to explain the challenges and said they 'could accept the situation we were facing'.
Indonesian authorities said her body would be taken to neighbouring island Bali on June 26 for an autopsy to establish the cause and time of death.
'Now the autopsy will be carried out in Bali. We looked for the closest option, which is Denpasar,' Indah Dhamayanti Putri, deputy governor of West Nusa Tenggara province, told reporters on June 26 , referring to Bali's capital.
'They want to know the time of death.'
Initial reports that Ms Marins was heard screaming after falling sparked speculation that she was alive hours after the accident.
But a drone spotted her not moving on June 23 and local officials said the evacuation effort was delayed by steep terrain and bad weather.
The case caught nationwide attention in Brazil with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva posting on social media that he had received the news of Ms Marins's death 'with great sadness'.
Lombok is a tourist destination known for its idyllic beaches and lush greenery, and many try to climb Mount Rinjani for its panoramic views. AFP

Hamas has said it is willing to free remaining hostages in Gaza under any deal to end the war, while Israel says it can only end if Hamas is disarmed and dismantled. Hamas refuses to lay down its arms. Interest in resolving the Gaza conflict has heightened in the wake of the U.S. and Israeli bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities. Israeli strike on south Lebanon kills one

PHOTO: REUTERS BEIRUT, Lebanon - An Israeli strike on southern Lebanon killed one person on June 28, the Lebanese Health Ministry said, the latest attack despite a ceasefire between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah. In a statement, the ministry said that an 'Israeli enemy' drone strike on a car in Kunin, south Lebanon, killed one man in a preliminary toll. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the incident. The attack comes a day after Israel killed a woman and wounded 25 other people in strikes across the country's south. Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported that the woman was killed in an Israeli drone strike on an apartment in the city of Nabatiyeh. Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee said on social media that the army 'did not target any civilian building'. The attacks on June 27 included a 'wave of successive heavy strikes' in the Nabatiyeh region which injured seven people, according to the NNA. The Israeli military said it 'identified rehabilitation attempts made by Hezbollah beforehand and struck terror infrastructure sites in the area'. Mr Adraee said the civilian building 'was hit by a rocket that was inside the (fire and defence array) site and launched and exploded as a result of the strike'. Israel has repeatedly bombed its northern neighbour despite the November ceasefire that aimed to end over a year of hostilities with Hezbollah. Under the ceasefire deal, Hezbollah was to pull its fighters back north of the Litani river, some 30 kilometres from the Israeli border, leaving the Lebanese army and United Nations peacekeepers as the only armed parties in the region. Israel was required to fully withdraw its troops from the country but has kept them in five locations in south Lebanon that it deems strategic. Hawaii Man Who Killed Wife's Acupuncturist After Finding Out About Their Affair, Sentenced
A Honolulu man has been sentenced to prison over the murder of his wife's acupuncturist with whom she was having an affair. Eric Thompson, 37, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Oahu Circuit Court Judge Paul Wong handed down his judgment on Friday, June 27, over the 2022 shooting death of Waipahu acupuncturist Jon Tokuhara. During his sentence, Thompson must serve a minimum of 15 years, before he is eligible for parole, though the Hawaii Paroling Authority may set a longer term. On Feb. 25, a jury found Thompson guilty of murder in the second degree and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. As previously reported, Thompson fatally shot Tokuhara in his Waipahu acupuncture shop in Jan. 2022, after learning about his wife's affair with Tokuhara about six months before the murder. Thompson's DNA, Car Linked Him to the Murder On Jan. 12, Thompson allegedly walked into Tokuhara Acupuncture and Healthcare at around 6:15 p.m. Investigators said that security cameras showed that Thompson was inside the business for only around 45 seconds, according to the television newsroom. Thompson reportedly fired three shots from a .22-caliber gun during that brief interval, the report indicated. Tokuhara's mother found her son shot to death inside his acupuncture clinic on Jan. 12, 2022. Police reportedly used surveillance video to identify Thompson's truck and linked him to the murder scene. As Thompson made his way back to his car, he dropped his hat, which was later picked up by a homeless man. Police used surveillance video to identify that man and pull samples of hair and fibers from it, ultimately leading to Thompson as the possible killer. Thompson's Wife Had Messaged Tokuhara About Her Fears Over Her Husband Finding Out About Their Affair The police investigation into Tokuhara's death reportedly uncovered Instagram messages between the victim and Thompson's wife in which she expressed fear about Thompson discovering the relationship. It appeared that while Tokuhara may have wanted a long-term relationship, Thompson's wife did not want to leave her husband; in July 2021, she reportedly told Tokuhara that she had to end the relationship and he couldn't contact her anymore. Their last Instagram communication was on July 23, 2021. "As we showed in our case in chief, Thompson was a controlling and violent man who planned this murder because his wife had an affair with Jon," said Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm. "Hopefully this sentence will provide the family and friends of Jon Tokuhara some closure," Alm said.
