JMCs begin repair of potholes, but residents unimpressed
JMC-H officials Wednesday claimed to have repaired over 300 potholes in past 2 days, while JMC-G on Thursday claimed to have repaired 602 potholes.
The reality on the ground tells a different story. Roads in both corporations' limits, from Hasanpura Road and Tripolia Bazaar to Meera Marg in Mansarovar, remain riddled with potholes. In several areas, roads have crumbled so badly that they now resemble unpaved tracks.
While some main roads, like at Tripolia Bazaar, were patched up overnight on Wednesday ahead of the Teej Yatra on July 27, councillors and locals claim that the inner lanes have been completely ignored.
Commissioner of JMC-H, Nidhi Patel, said, "We have already begun the work and are progressing quickly. Our aim is to complete the patchwork as soon as possible."
However, residents argue the work should have been done well before the monsoon began.

This is a crucial step towards building a resilient city capable of handling major disasters, an advisory from DDMA said. It urged citizens to cooperate fully and not to panic during the drill. It is a planned exercise and not a real emergency, it added. Sirens and public address systems may be used to signal the start of the drill. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), armed forces, civil defence, Delhi Police and other stakeholders will carry out simulated rescue operations, casualty evacuations, and medical assistance to mock victims, the advisory added. The exercise will begin on July 29 with a high-level symposium on disaster risk and strategic preparedness. A tabletop exercise (TTEx) will be conducted on July 30 to allow disaster managers to test their response plans in a controlled environment. The full-scale mock drill on August 1 will be the final phase, putting planning into action on the ground. Apart from Delhi's 11 revenue districts, the exercise will cover Gurugram, Faridabad, Palwal, Nuh, and Rewari in Haryana, and Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, it said. The DDMA emphasised the "whole-of-government" approach adopted for the drill, which includes the involvement of the armed forces, scientific bodies like the IMD and NCS, and civil society organisations. It said the exercise is a significant step towards making Delhi and the NCR more disaster-resilient through proactive planning, capacity building, and public awareness.

In a study published in the PLOS One journal, international researchers analysed the behaviour of almost 3,000 heterosexual users of a Czech dating app. They found that men expressed interest in women who were more desirable than themselves, while women usually pursued men of a similar level of desirability. Here, the desirability was measured through the number of swipes a user received from people on the app. The app had more male users, meaning that female users "generally ranked more highly in this hierarchy." And despite having the clear upper hand, women sometimes "chose slightly less desirable partners on average." But, as is the law of romance, successful matches only happened among people with similar levels of desirability.
