Your morning coffee 'flips an ancient switch' to help you live longer

Daily Record2 days ago
Caffeine appears to do more than perk you up - it actually helps cells cope with stress and energy shortages, according to scientists.
We all have our morning routine, and flicking on the kettle or revving up the coffee machine to indulge in our first cup of the day might feature in yours. The caffeine hit could seem inconsequential to our larger wellbeing.
However, your morning coffee might do more than wake you up. Scientists have revealed that the beverage actually flips an ancient longevity switch that could lead to better health and a longer life.

A new study from the Cellular Ageing and Senescence laboratory at Queen Mary University of London's Centre for Molecular Cell Biology, reveals how caffeine could play a role in slowing down the ageing process at a cellular level.

Dr John-Patrick Alao, the postdoctoral research scientist leading this study, said: "These findings help explain why caffeine might be beneficial for health and longevity.
"They open up exciting possibilities for future research into how we might trigger these effects more directly, with diet, lifestyle, or new medicines."
Caffeine has long been linked to potential health benefits. But how it works inside our cells, and what exactly are its connections with nutrient and stress responsive gene and protein networks has remained a mystery. Until now.
In new research published by scientists studying fission yeast - a single-celled organism surprisingly similar to human cells - researchers found that caffeine affects ageing by tapping into an ancient cellular energy system.
A few years ago, the same research team found that caffeine helps cells live longer by acting on a growth regulator called TOR (Target of Rapamycin).

TOR is a biological switch that tells cells when to grow, based on how much food and energy is available. This switch has been controlling energy and stress responses in living things for over 500 million years.
But in their latest study, the scientists made a surprising discovery - caffeine doesn't act on this growth switch directly. Instead, it works by activating another important system called AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK).
This is a cellular fuel gauge that is evolutionarily conserved in yeast and humans.

"When your cells are low on energy, AMPK kicks in to help them cope," Dr Charalampos (Babis) Rallis, the study's senior author, explained. "And our results show that caffeine helps flip that switch."
Interestingly, AMPK is also the target of metformin, a common diabetes drug that's being studied for its potential to extend human lifespan together with rapamycin.

Using their yeast model, the researchers showed that caffeine's effect on AMPK influences how cells grow, repair their DNA, and respond to stress, all of which are tied to ageing and disease.
So, the next time you reach for your coffee, you might be doing more than keeping your mind sharp.
You could also be giving your cells a helping hand.

DWP PIP claimants may be able to increase payments by over £630 a month

New data from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) reveals that as of April's end, approximately 420,000 individuals on Personal Independence Payment (PIP) were having their claims reviewed. This includes 380,000 award reviews and 40,000 changes in circumstances. Currently, over 3.7 million people across England and Wales are claiming PIP. However, many individuals not receiving the maximum PIP may be unaware that if their. condition has worsened and they require more assistance with daily living tasks or mobility needs, or both, they could potentially increase their monthly payments. PIP is designed to assist people with a disability, long-term illness, or physical or mental health condition with additional daily living or mobility costs. A successful claim for PIP can result in weekly payments ranging from £29.20 to £187.45, equating to between £116.80 and £749.80 every four-week pay period. The significant discrepancy between the payments is due to the various combinations of the daily living and mobility component rates that a claimant could receive, reports the Daily Record. Someone could be awarded the highest rate of both and receive the maximum, £749.80 every four-week pay period, or the standard rate of both, £412.40. Similarly, someone may only be entitled to the standard rate of the daily living component - £73.90 per week, £295.60 every four weeks or the standard rate of the mobility component - £29.20 per week, £116.80 every four weeks. Someone on the standard rate of the mobility component (£116.80 every four weeks), with a change in their circumstances, such as a worsening condition or additional health issues, could potentially receive the higher rates of both the daily living and mobility components. This would result in payments of £749.80 every four weeks, an increase of £633. Increasing payments from the standard rate to the higher, could boost annual income to £9,747.40 over 2025/26. In another example, someone currently getting the standard rate of both components (£412.40 per four-week pay period) who reports a change and is awarded the higher rate of both the daily living and mobility components (£749.80), would gain an extra £337.40 each month, some £4,386 over the current financial year. It's important to be aware that reporting a change in circumstances to DWP or Social Security Scotland does not guarantee an increase in award. Each case is unique and no single condition affects two people in the same way. PIP payment rates PIP is are paid at the following amounts per week depending on your circumstances:. Daily living Standard rate: £73.90 Enhanced rate: £110.40 Mobility Standard rate: £29.20 Enhanced rate: £77.05 Reporting a change - PIP The most important thing to understand about the PIP new claim and review process is awards are based on how your condition, long-term illness or disability affects you - not the actual condition itself. The DWP makes this distinction clear in the current edition of the online PIP Handbook. The guidance on explains: 'As the assessment principles consider the impact of a claimant's condition on their ability to live independently and not the condition itself, claimants with the same condition may get different outcomes. The outcome is based on an independent assessment and all available evidence.' Before contacting the DWP to report a change in your circumstances, it's important to be aware depending on the change, your PIP could go up, go down, stay the same or stop. Guidance on states you should contact the PIP if: you need more or less help with daily living and mobility tasks your health professional tells you your condition will last for a longer or shorter time than you reported before your condition has worsened and you're not expected to live more than 12 months How to report a PIP change Call the 'PIP enquiry line' on 0800 121 4433, lines are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. Full guidance on reporting a change can be found on here. Before making any request, seek independent advice from organisations such as the Citizens Advice Network because while an award review could result in an increase in payments, it could also see them reduced or even stopped. Amazon's 'life saver' insect bite pen that 'stops itching immediately' now £15

As we head into the summer, plenty of Brits will be planning a camping trip or beach break. But if you're prone to being bitten, you may want to consider this itch-reducing pen As we're well into the summer season, many are eagerly ticking off the days until they can escape on their sun-soaked holidays and immerse themselves in a different culture. Meanwhile, others are planning camping trips, be it for a festival or a getaway with friends and family. While the anticipation of these events may have us buzzing, it's easy to overlook the nuisance of insect and mosquito bites. These pesky bites, leaving your skin red and itchy, can put a bit of a damper on your spirits. For those who suffer severe reactions to bites, it might be worth considering an insect heat pen as a solution. Luckily, Amazon has slashed the price of the Beurer BR90 Insect Bite Healer from £32.99 down to £14.97 in a limited-time offer. The Beurer Bite Healer offers relief from bite symptoms by using a rapidly heating ceramic plate to speed up the healing process after an insect bite or sting. It provides itch and swelling relief without the need for medication or chemicals. This device, which is safe for pregnant women, also features an optional light. So, if you're bitten in the middle of the night, you can accurately target the bite without having to switch on the bedroom light, reports the Daily Record. It's worth noting that this gadget operates on AAA batteries. The manufacturer claims that users can get up to 300 uses out of the device before needing to replace the batteries. Shoppers on Amazon have been turning their attention to the RROFKA Insect Sting and Bite Relief, retailing at £24.98, for its dual functionality. The gadget isn't just a heat pen but also integrates a suction tool to extract post-bite irritants. Convenience is key with this device given that it's both cordless and rechargeable. Meanwhile, Currys offers a portable solution with the HEAT IT Classic USB Type-C Smart Insect Bite Healer, conveniently discounted from £29.99 to £23.99. This nifty device provides immediate relief with concentrated heat and has the added perk of running off your smartphone – provided it's USB-C compatible. On the note of effectiveness, the Beurer Bite Healer boasts an impressive 4.3-star rating on Amazon, corroborated by more than 45,000 reviewers. Its popularity surges as the summer approaches, with purchases exceeding 1,000 units in just the past month. A satisfied customer shared their relief: "Got a bite on my leg and woke up with a very itchy lump behind my knee. Used the heat pad on it when I got up on the 3 second mode and it pretty much stopped itching instantly! I was very impressed and relieved!" Echoing the enthusiasm, another five-star commentary highlighted: "Amazing little tool which works very effectively and the ONLY thing that takes away the itch completely! I would highly recommend it!!!" Yet, a word of caution comes from another buyer who notes the importance of prompt application: "The snag is: You need to get to the sting pretty quickly after it happens - which means carrying this little gizmo around with you." Some customers have voiced their discomfort about the warmth, with one shopper remarking: "The 3 seconds of heat can get pretty intense on the less fleshy parts of the body (elbow, knuckles, ankles) but is bearable on other areas." Yet, a leading reviewer chimed in with praise, saying: "Using this stops the itching immediately. It feels a bit too hot at first, but you soon get used to it. We also noticed that bites treated with this healed faster than those that hadn't been. I also bought the travel version." Another satisfied customer shared their relief: "I react very badly to bites. But this machine takes the sting out of the bite and stops them from being itchy. Completely changed my experience and made my life so much more manageable going abroad. I couldn't go away without it now! A life saver."
