Israeli Foreign Minister quits Knesset: Expected resignation

Shafaq News5 hours ago
Shafaq News – Middle East
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar officially resigned from the Knesset on Tuesday, as part of a previously agreed rotation arrangement within the National Unity party bloc.
Michal Woskala, the bloc's parliamentary chair, signed off on Sa'ar's resignation, although his replacement in the parliament has not yet been announced.
This move follows a common mechanism in several Israeli parties aimed at broadening political participation among candidates.
Sa'ar, who broke away from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party in 2020 to form the 'New Hope' party, later joined political alliances including the National Unity list. A recent political settlement in 2024 with Netanyahu led to Sa'ar's appointment as foreign minister.

Houthis release video of Red Sea attack on 'Magic Seas' vessel

Shafaq News – Sanaa Yemen's Houthis (Ansarallah) on Tuesday released footage via their military media showing the moment they attacked and sank the commercial vessel Magic Seas in the Red Sea. The footage begins with Houthi fighters communicating with the ship's crew and ordering it to stop. It then shows the subsequent strike and boarding operation that led to the vessel's eventual sinking. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack yesterday, stating that Magic Seas was targeted with two unmanned explosive boats, five cruise missiles, and three drones. The United Arab Emirates confirmed that the Svenbrism, a vessel owned by Abu Dhabi Ports Group, responded to a distress call from Magic Seas following the attack. In a statement, the UAE Foreign Ministry said the rescue operation successfully saved all 22 crew members, including security personnel. The Houthis have launched multiple maritime and aerial attacks in recent months targeting ships and sites linked to Israel. The group says the campaign is a direct response to Israel's continued military operations in Gaza.

Iraq's Higher Education Ministry to sue TV channels over 'defamatory' university reports

Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraq's Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced, on Tuesday, that it has initiated formal legal action against two television channels, accusing them of deliberately broadcasting 'inaccurate' content that undermines the reputation of the country's universities. In a statement, the ministry said the media segment aired by the two channels 'lacked professional standards and credible sourcing,' describing it as a 'defamatory' campaign targeting national universities. The ministry reiterated its commitment to protecting the standing of Iraqi higher education institutions and supporting their academic achievements at the international level. It warned against circulating unverified content or reports timed to tarnish the image of universities that have received international accreditation and currently host more than 3,000 foreign students from 47 nationalities. The statement comes one day after the ministry denied reports that it had formed a committee to investigate eight universities accused of lacking research integrity and academic transparency.
