Canfield author publishes new book

Yahoo13-06-2025
BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — One Canfield Native is celebrating the release of her new book filled with fantasy, adventure and rock 'n' roll.
When Joan Reardon was a kid, her mom would bring her to the Boardman Barnes & Noble, where she gravitated toward fantasy books like 'Harry Potter' and 'Percy Jackson.'
'There has never been a time in my life where I wasn't writing,' Reardon said. 'My parents love to tell a story of when I was a baby and I would just scribble on pieces of paper and stack them on top of each other and say, 'I wrote a book.''
Twenty years later, she returned to that same store to find her own new book, 'Dad Rock Dragon Quest,' on the shelves — right next to the books she once fell in love with.
'It's about a family that's a blended family that goes on an adventure to rescue a dragon from magical poachers,' Reardon said. 'Simultaneously, it also features, you know, a lot of rock and roll, plenty of references to like 'Top Gun' and eighties action movies. So it's kind of a story for the whole family.'
This is Reardon's second book to be published and sold in thousands of stores across the country, but it holds a special place in her heart. She says many aspects of the story are based on her husband, whom she married shortly after finishing the book in 2023.
'We did, I think, one round of edits, and then we sent it out to the publisher, and we didn't hear back for about two months,' Reardon said. 'And then, the night of our rehearsal dinner, we got news that it was going to be published. So two reasons to celebrate.'
Reardon wrote the book in between her law school classes, and, over the past year and a half, she has worked with Simon & Schuster publishing company to get ready for the book's grand release, which was on June 3.
'There's a lot of love and work that goes into the book from, you know, dozens of people. And so everyone's very, very excited to finally have it in stores,' Reardon said.
So far, the book has already received a starred review from Publishers Weekly and been picked as a gold standard selection from the Junior Library Guild.
But she's not stopping there — she's already putting the finishing touches on the first draft of her next book.

THE RUNNING MAN: Edgar Wright Breaks Down His Reboot's Leads and Talks About Earning Schwarzenegger's Blessing — GeekTyrant

Edgar Wright's The Running Man reboot is speeding toward theaters, and now that the first trailer has dropped, the filmmaker is talking about and teasing what fans can expect, from the revamped cast of heroes and villains to getting Arnold Schwarzenegger's personal stamp of approval. Based on Stephen King's dystopian novel (written under the Richard Bachman pseudonym), this new version of The Running Man isn't looking to copy the 1987 cult favorite. It's diving deeper into the source material while giving it a modern, unflinching energy. Glen Powell ( Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You ) takes the lead as Ben Richards, an out-of-work construction worker who enters the Network's deadly 30-day survival show in a desperate attempt to save his sick daughter. Jayme Lawson plays Sheila, Ben's wife, adding emotional stakes to the chaos. 'Richards is looking to go to the Network building to get onto a different show, to get some quick cash,' Wright explains. 'Then a series of incidents lead to him becoming a prime candidate for The Running Man.' On the antagonist side, Josh Brolin is Dan Killian, who's not just the show's producer, but the mastermind behind the entire bloodsport. ' Brolin calls his character, 'A guy who basically has created this show, and runs this show, and loves to create any scenario that he can that's going to bring more people emotionally wrapped up into the show, regardless of the consequences.' Lee Pace plays McCone, the lead Hunter tasked with tracking Richards. He calls the character 'a kind of murderous ghost that follows Richards through the story, trying to murder him, but also trying to put on a show for the American public.' And then there's Colman Domingo, channeling Jerry Springer energy as Bobby T, the wildly charismatic face of The Running Man TV broadcast. 'The most famous celebrity in the world,' Domingo says. 'Which is why we have to make sure he shines in every way, with his diamonds and his jewelry and his expensive Jacob & Co. watch.' Supporting cast includes Martin Herlihy and Katy O'Brian as fellow Runners, William H. Macy as a shady black-market dealer, Emilia Jones in a mysterious and pivotal role, and Michael Cera as Elton, a character from the book that Wright teases has 'a little surprising' arc compared to Cera's usual fare. 'It was such a thrill to be with him and also just to see him and Glen Powell together,' Wright adds. 'They're a very unlikely duo.' One of the biggest moments for Wright and Powell was Getting Arnold Schwarzenegger's blessing. The director reveals that he and Powell got on a Zoom call with the action legend, and it couldn't have gone better. 'It was amazing,' Wright says. 'We wanted to give a nod to the great man in the film — I'm not going to say what that was — and we sort of needed his approval for it.' He continues: 'Glen has been in film with Arnold; he was in Expendables 3 , and he knew [his son] Patrick. I said, 'We have to talk to Arnold.' It was an incredible call… He actually said to us, 'Out of all of my films that I've made, I've always felt that's one that would be a worthy remake, and I think you guys are all set up to do that.' He basically gave us his blessing, and it was an incredibly sweet thing to do.' This reboot looks to fix what many felt the original got wrong giving us a movie that's sharper, deadlier, and more relevant than ever. A brutal media satire wrapped in a high-stakes action thriller, The Running Man is gunning for both your adrenaline and your conscience. The hunt begins November 7.

Wattpad Guilty Pleasures That Haven't Aged Well

Don't deny it—we ALL have had an embarrassing Wattpad phase in our lives, where we gave into the FOMO of fanfics and erotica and found ourselves giggling at narratives that, honestly, would get cancelled today. 15-year-old me was having the time of her life on that website. I get why my parents were so pissed with me for spending HOURS on the website, reading words that should have never been written. And yet, every teenager was blushing under the covers reading those imaginary stories. It definitely was a phase of puberty I do not want to remember! Given that, there were a lot of tropes and narratives that Wattpad is famously known for—and a lot of them are questionable, to say the least. So here are 8 things we all have either read or come across on Wattpad that were sooo not normal!* *Disclaimer: some of the tropes mentioned below include sexual content and other controversial subjects. 1. "(Y/N), I'm so sorry. Steve wholeheartedly apologized as he rushed forward and embraced you from behind. You twisted in his arms and buried your face in his chest." - Avengers x Reader Y/N refers to your name. A good and cute romantic y/n like this excerpt does no harm to anybody. Except for when, Wattpad always goes the extra mile and has us imagining ourselves falling in love with inanimate objects, having weird powers, begging the BIGGEST red flag to love us back, and other extremely weird stuff. 2. "Taehyung had a girlfriend, Yuri, who cheated on him only for money. Taehyung was so madly in love with her that he couldn't see that she was just using him. When his girlfriend left him with another man after taking his money, he was furious. He loved her so much, but at the end, he got nothing. From that day on, he became a cold-hearted mafia and killed his girlfriend and her boyfriend and never trusted in love or relationships ever again." - Arrange Marriage with the MAFIA! This excerpt is just one example of the thousands of fanfics on Wattpad, which cater to every genre and audience. You have One Direction (of course), Star Wars, BTS, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, actors, actresses, singers, and even Donald Trump (Yeah, you read that right.) And trust me, nothing about these fanfics is normal. 3. "Harry just wrapped his arms around me and leaned his head on my shoulder, closing his eyes. I sighed, breathing in his comforting scent." - This Is More Than A Bromance: Larry Stylinson Speaking of One Direction, fans have gone ahead of "Harry x Y/N" and taken it up a notch—we now have "Harry x Louis" because, to fans, it's more than bromance. The trope of setting up band members with each other is so normal that fans don't bat an eye, but once you start reading the details, you can never erase it from your mind. 4. "Damn it! I know it's forbidden, but you're so tempting." - Touch Me Sir And of course, you have smut. And as always, it is unhinged, which makes me want to throw not about the extreme detail, but rather the characters involved. From a Monster energy drink can to Voldemort, Wattpad writers really leave nothing to the imagination. 5. "He looks around the classroom, and his gaze abruptly stops on me. I could see a small sort of smile work its way into his face." - Falling For My Teacher Okay, this one just crosses all ethical bounds. The staggering number of romance plots between a teacher and a student is seriously CONCERNING. It's not a romantic trope; it's a major problem, which should not be turned into a plot twist. Do better!Whoever has written this should really get their laptop privileges revoked. 6. "Girls weaker than her would probably be reduced to a puddle. That dark hair and dangerous smile would be able to convert even the saintliest of nuns." - Dominantly Yours This is where the fictional dominant alpha male, mob boss, and mafia characters come to life. There are tropes of the shy girl meeting the 'alpha male' and falling deeply in love, letting him do whatever he wants. Yeah, I'm having none of that! No controlling, no possessiveness, just none of this! We have to be better than this as a society. 7. "As she gazed back at the TV, I couldn't help inspecting her legs and feet. My foster sister had a pretty awesome-looking pair of legs: slim, long, flawless pale of sexy." - Foster Bond This is simply WRONG. I do not want to see anything with FAMILY in it. I cannot emphasize enough how deeply incorrect and wrong this is. Please stop. 8. "Before becoming a breeder mouse, this rich, half-blood snake bought me for a high price, especially as a male mouse. Now I'm sitting here in a car for the first time in my life, nervously staring at this snake's hot face." - Love Uncaged Hybrid mouse, snake, and human? This trope of the main character being EVERYTHING except a human can only be found on Wattpad. All stories copy Beauty and The Beast, where the 'not like other girls' girl falls in love with this hybrid animal/beast, and in return he protects her from the evil forces of the world. It's just downright creepy. After going through all of these, it is pretty much established that Wattpad does not contain too many normal reads. And to those who have been traumatized by these fanfics, you are not alone. There is an entire generation who has gone through it and somehow made it through as a better person (I can only hope). To people who do not know about Wattpad, I am so happy for you.

Cat Follows Kids to School—What the Principal Does Next Is Perfect

When the family cat set off on his usual stroll to school with the kids, his owner wasn't expecting him to get a personal escort home—courtesy of the school principal. Nova Scotia resident Natasha, who didn't give a surname, and her family adopted 4-year-old Simon during the height of the pandemic. Since then, the cat has become something of a neighborhood character, especially among students and staff at daughter Nancy's elementary school. Most mornings, Simon tags along for the five- to seven-minute walk to the school, sauntering alongside the kids like he is clocking in for a shift. "He's always been a bit of a supervisor," Natasha told Newsweek. "But this was next-level." Pictures of Simon the cat being escorted back home by the school's principal. Simon was making circles around her portable class." Concerned for Simon's safety, the principal decided a more-official intervention was warranted. Just a few hours later, Natasha was greeted at home by the school's principal … with Simon in tow. The unexpected moment was caught on camera, and has since been shared on Instagram. "It was sweet and unexpected," Natasha said. "I was laughing—it felt like he was being sent home by the authorities!" The video has been viewed over 687,000 times by Instagram users and sparked a series of reactions from viewers. "Simon is a hero in my eyes," said viewer @zoef21, while Instagram user @melsnod wrote: "That's the best day of the principal's career." "Well this is adorable," posted @miz_missy27, while @suz88_8 added: "He'll do it again tomorrow." Natasha was delighted by the reaction online. "I often share Simon's antics online, and this one just felt like a wholesome moment worth showing," she said. This isn't the first time a pet has made an unexpected journey. Earlier this year, a woman arrived at the vet with her feline when she opened the carrier and realized her other cat had come along for the ride. Another cat owner stopped for gas when she realized that she had a fluffy stowaway in the back after leaving her car windows down. In 2024, a woman got into her car, only to get a huge surprise when she looked back and saw that someone else's dog had jumped into the back.
