Former Barcelona midfielder, Arda Turan, appointed Shakhtar head coach

The Hindu28-05-2025
Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk has announced former Turkey midfielder Arda Turan as its new head coach, replacing Marino Pusic.
Turan, 38, has signed a contract until 2027 after taking unfancied Eyupspor to a sixth-place finish in the Turkish top flight.
Next season, 15-time Ukrainian champion Shakhtar will feature in the Europa League first qualifying round having won the domestic cup earlier this month.
'I'm proud to have joined Shakhtar - a great club with a rich history and great traditions,' Turan said in a Shakhtar statement.
'We are deeply motivated to win trophies - both in Ukraine and in European competitions.'
Shakhtar was forced to leave its home ground, the Donbass Arena in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, after Russian-backed separatists seized control of the region in 2014.
Its home league games take place in the western city of Lviv.
It held its Champions League games this term in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
Turan retired from playing in 2022 after spells with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Galatasaray. He also won 100 caps for his country.

Sports minister Mandaviya to meet Usha, EC members to resolve IOA impasse

New Delhi: Union sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya will meet the Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha and executive committee members to discuss ways to end the long-standing governance crisis in the apex sports body, it has been learnt. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, sports minister Mansukh Mandviya and IOA President PT Usha. (PTI) Usha and the EC members have been at loggerheads and that has severely impacted IOA's functioning. The EC has not ratified the appointment of Usha-backed CEO Raghuram Iyer. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) raised the governance issue with the Indian delegation that went to the IOC headquarters in Lausanne recently to discuss India's bid for the 2036 Olympics. Due to the governance issues, IOC has suspended its Olympic Solidarity grants to IOA. In the last few days, Mandaviya has made attempts to bring Usha and EC members to the negotiating table. He has held informal meetings with the EC members. It has been learnt that Usha too has reached out to a few EC members in her bid to break the ice. As reported by HT, the IOA truce started with Usha including treasurer Sahdev Yadav and EC member Bhupender Bajwa in a panel to set a roadmap for the delayed Boxing Federation of India (BFI) elections. Iyer, too, has spoken to some EC members. An official said his appointment is likely to be ratified now with certain renegotiations. 'A middle way is being worked out to break the deadlock,' the member said.

Palace appeals to CAS against Europa League demotion

Premier League club Crystal Palace has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against UEFA's decision to remove it from the Europa League over alleged breaches of multi-club ownership regulations, the CAS said on Tuesday. Palace was demoted to the Conference League, the third-tier European competition, by UEFA's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) this month because John Textor, president of the Eagle Football Group, majority owners of Olympique Lyonnais, also has a controlling stake in Palace. Ligue 1 club Lyon, which also qualified for the second-tier continental competition, were allowed to compete. ALSO READ | Arsenal agrees deal with Sporting for striker Viktor Gyokeres — reports 'This (appeal) will be an expedited procedure with an operative decision (without grounds) to be rendered on or before 11 August 2025,' CAS said in a statement. Palace said last month that New York Jets co-owner Robert Wood 'Woody' Johnson had signed a legally binding agreement to buy Eagle Football Holding's stake in the club, subject to approval from the Premier League. Palace, however, missed the March deadline to comply with the multi-club ownership rules before winning the FA Cup in May to earn their place in European competition. Nottingham Forest, which finished seventh in the Premier League, will replace Palace in the Europa League if its appeal fails.

Jonas Valanciunas Drops 5-Word Reaction to EuroLeague Rumors, Confirms Denver Nuggets Commitment for 2025-26?

Jonas Valanciunas (Image Source - Getty Images) Jonas Valanciunas has officially confirmed that he will stay with the Denver Nuggets for the 2025-26 NBA season, putting an end to growing speculation about a possible return to European basketball. The 6-foot-11 Lithuanian center turned down a lucrative three-year offer worth nearly €12 million (around $36 million) from Greek EuroLeague giants Panathinaikos, choosing instead to honor his current NBA contract. In a statement to Valanciunas addressed the situation directly: 'I want to clear the air about my playing situation next season now that Denver has made their decision to keep me. The idea of playing for Panathinaikos, closer to home, was very exciting to me, but that will have to wait. I am fully committed to honoring my contract with the Denver Nuggets this season and will give it my all to compete for a championship. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski, File) Jonas Valanciunas was acquired by the Denver Nuggets in a July 2025 trade with the Sacramento Kings that sent Dario Šarić to California. The move was made to add veteran size and toughness next to MVP Nikola Jokić in the frontcourt. According to Nuggets executive VP of basketball operations Ben Tenzer, discussions with Valanciunas and his representatives were smooth, and there were 'no concerns' about him showing up for training camp. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cat Keeps Hugging Friend Before Going To The Vet – The Vet Paled When He Saw Them Tips and Tricks Undo The 33-year-old is entering the final guaranteed year of his contract, worth $10.4 million. There is also a non-guaranteed $10 million team option for the 2026-27 season. With Denver ruling out any potential buyout, the only route for an early exit would have been a holdout—something Valanciunas has decisively shut down. Jonas Valanciunas' Expected Role with the Denver Nuggets Jonas Valanciunas is coming off a solid season split between the Washington Wizards and Sacramento Kings , averaging 10.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 2 assists per game across 81 appearances. He also shot 55% from the field and nearly 88% from the free-throw line. Denver plans to use him primarily as a reliable backup to Jokić, who logged a career-high 36.7 minutes per game last season. His presence is expected to solidify the second unit and reduce the MVP's workload. This move finalizes an active offseason for Denver's front office, which also added Cameron Johnson, brought back Bruce Brown, and signed veteran scorer Tim Hardaway Jr. The front office, led by Tenzer and GM Jonathan Wallace, is clearly focused on building a deeper roster after last season's narrow playoff exit. NBA Over EuroLeague—for Now Jonas Valanciunas is also preparing to represent Lithuania at the upcoming FIBA EuroBasket, which Denver officials may use as an opportunity to monitor his form and conditioning. Though the temptation of playing closer to home in the EuroLeague was strong, the veteran center remains locked in on competing at the NBA level. In reaffirming his commitment, Valanciunas has provided clarity not only for Denver's front office and fans but also for the EuroLeague market. His decision highlights a dedication to honoring his current NBA obligations while keeping the door open for a potential European return down the line.
