Pope Leo's impressive gym routine revealed by ex-personal trainer

Independent22-05-2025
From the hallowed halls of the Vatican to the weight racks of a Roman gym, the newly elected Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, has followed an unconventional path to the papacy.
For two years, Prevost, appointed in 2023 to oversee bishop nominations, frequented the Omega gym in Rome's upscale Prati district, alongside priests, nuns, and local residents.
The gym's owner, Francesco Tamburlani, recalled the moment he learned of Prevost's elevation. "When the name of the pope was announced, my phone rings and my son tells me, 'Dad, it's Robert! Robert, our member!'" Tamburlani recounted, noting the eruption of cheers from his staff. "This moved us, filled us with joy."
Prevost, 69, maintained a rigorous workout regimen, surprising his personal trainer, Valerio Masella, with his stamina. Their sessions, two or three times a week, lasted up to an hour and involved a workout plan typically designed for men aged 50-55.
So, how much does the pope bench? Masella can't speak to his papal power, since Prevost was focused on posture and cardiovascular capacity. He ran on his favorite treadmill that faces a mural featuring famous local landmarks, among them St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
'We would start off slow and then go pretty strong, I must say. Especially a lot of resistance on the exercise bike, a very strong climb,' Masella said.
Throughout their two-year training, Masella never knew Prevost was a cardinal, nor did he hear him utter a discouraging word. 'I don't think I've ever heard him make a comment about anything that wasn't positive. He was always positive about everything -- the weather, the city, the people, also for me, he said he liked the gym.'
A Vatican spokesperson didn't reply when asked for comment.
A sporting pope isn't new. Pope John Paul II, who was elected at the age of 58, was an avid skier and mountain trekker.
Chicago-born Prevost's game is tennis. On May 15, he met top-ranked player Jannik Sinner, who gave him a racket and offered to play during an off day at the Italian Open. Leo had said earlier in the week that he would be up for a charity match when it was suggested by a journalist.
After Prevost took over the Vatican's Dicastery for Bishops in 2023, he said in an interview with the Augustinian Order that his new job had left him little free time to practice his game. While the Mediterranean climate makes tennis possible year-round, the papacy will likely leave him even fewer chances to step onto a court.
Tamburlani, the Omega owner, says the Holy Father is welcome back any time he wants to squeeze in a workout. After all, his membership's still active.
'This would make us so happy,' he said. 'We would organize our gym to guarantee his safety and his privacy. We would just need a sign.'

England vs Spain LIVE: Euro 2025 final latest score and confirmed team news

Sort: Newest first Oldest first July 27, 2025 2:44 pm Wright's warning One of England's biggest problems this tournament has been their sluggish starts to matches. They've found themselves behind at half-time in three of their five games and against a Spain side who don't concede many goals, they cannot afford to do the same in the final 'We need to start games better than we're starting games,' Arsenal legend Ian Wright has said. 'We play tournament football. You never go into a game with England and feel really comfortable. 'For some reason, we make it very difficult and then we drag ourselves through because we've got such determination. We've got such character. 'You can't continue to rely on that. At some stage that luck is going to run out and we're going to need to find a way to start games better, and get a foothold in the game.' July 27, 2025 2:30 pm Early team news Sarina Wiegman doesn't tinker with her starting XI much but she may be forced to do so for the final. Lauren James came off at half-time against Italy with an ankle injury but did returning to training on Saturday. But should the Chelsea forward not be deemed fit to start, Wiegman will likely select Beth Mead or Chloe Kelly to slot in at right-wing. Kelly has had the more direct impact this tournament and came off the bench to score the winner in the Euro 2022 final but Mead is perhaps better suited to the tactical set-up. Discover all the early team news and our predicted line-ups here. July 27, 2025 2:15 pm Jess Carter England's journey to the Euro 2025 final has been marred by the online racist abuse aimed at Jess Carter. Ahead of the semi-final, the defender took a step back from social media while the Lionesses will no longer take the knee ahead of kick-off. Sarina Wiegman took Carter out of her starting XI for the Italy win, though she did come on in the final few minutes of extra-time. Esme Morgan is expected to continue in her place for the final. Read more on the story here. July 27, 2025 2:01 pm Bank Holiday on the cards Three hours to kick-off. There is so much on the line today: the chance to be immortalised in history, the pride of a nation and – most importantly – a bank holiday. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is under increasing pressure to reward the country with a bank holiday if the Lionesses triumph this evening. He was in support of the idea ahead of the 2023 World Cup final loss and suggested it would've happened had the men's team won the Euros last year. 'Retaining the title would be one of our country's greatest sporting achievements,' Liberal Democrat culture, media and sport spokesman Max Wilkinson said. 'Fans and patriots across the country deserve the chance to celebrate the talent, success and historic achievement of this amazing team. 'A Bank Holiday would also give our hospitality industry a much-needed assist and boost.' July 27, 2025 1:43 pm Hayes: 'Don't start Agyemang' Without question, the breakout star of Euro 2025 has been Michelle Agyemang. The teenager, who had just one England appearance to her name before the tournament, scored the crucial equalisers against Sweden and Italy. There's great clamour for the Arsenal forward to start, but Chelsea legend and USA manager Emma Hayes doesn't think she should. 'As good as Michelle's impact has been with her three goals in four caps, it is another jump up to do it from the start. 'There is so much a starting centre-forward has to do other than score goals, including to set the press, and Alessia Russo knows that role inside out.' Read the full story here. July 27, 2025 1:29 pm Spain's route to the final By comparison, Spain's journey to the Euro 2025 final has been fairly easy. They cruised to the top of Group B by defeating Portugal 6-0, Belgium 6-2 and Italy 3-1. Host nation Switzerland made things difficult in the quarter-finals, saving two penalties, but Spain still secured a 2-0 win. The only match they've struggled in was the semi-final against Germany, with only a moment of magic from Aitana Bonmati in extra-time separating the two sides. Spain may be world champions but this will be their first Euros final… July 27, 2025 1:17 pm England's route to the final To say that England's journey to the Euro 2025 final has been chaotic would be a massive understatement. Drawn in the 'Group of Death', the Lionesses lost their opening match 2-1 to France but recovered to beat the Netherlands 4-0 and Wales 6-1. They were so close to being knocked out at the quarter-final stage after going 2-0 down at half-time to Sweden but were rescued by late goals from Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang. In the subsequent penalty shootout, they were twice on the verge of elimination but Hannah Hampton's heroics saved them and they snuck through. It was a similar story in the semi-final, with Agyemang netting a 96th minute equaliser after Italy had the lead the game for so long. With another shootout looming, England won a penalty which Chloe Kelly took – her effort was saved but she tucked in the rebound to send the Lionesses to Basel. July 27, 2025 12:54 pm England fans in good voice The atmosphere in Basel has been bubbling up nicely all weekend, with comedian Maisie Adam among the England fans getting ready for kick-off in just over four hours' time. They all believe the Lionesses will triumph, as does Rachel Brown-Finnis. 'What Sarina Wiegman does is create an environment off as well as on the pitch where players can thrive,' the former England goalkeeper writes in her Metro column. 'There is never a doubt from her that England can get an outcome and for her, rightly, the result outweighs everything. That's not complacency – just real, real belief. 'They now need to show that, because we all know how difficult this is going to be if our never-say-die Lionesses are to make history. But we can do it again, we really can.' July 27, 2025 12:37 pm 2023 World Cup flashback Today's final is of course a rematch of the 2023 World Cup final and the Lionesses will be hoping for a very different result. Spain beat England 1-0 in Australia to win their first World Cup with Olga Carmona scoring the winner in the first-half. Spain were the better team for much of the game and nearly doubled their lead late on, but Mary Earps notably saved Jenni Hermoso's penalty. Earps is among several notable England stars who started that final but are not at Euro 2025. July 27, 2025 12:14 pm Arsenal vs Newcastle Speaking of Arsenal, Mikel Arteta's side are in action right now as they take on Newcastle in a pre-season friendly. Martin Zubimendi is making his first start for the Gunners while new signing Viktor Gyokeres will be unveiled to the fans in Singapore. You can follow that match here, but make sure you come back to continue our build-up to the Euro 2025 final! July 27, 2025 12:00 pm Arsenal provide the key to victory? If nothing else, the Euro 2025 final should be a fascinating game of football from a tactical point of view. Sarina Wiegman will need to deliver a tactical masterclass to defeat Spain, who are the world champions and favourites to be crowned European champions. But could the Lionesses boss be inspired by Arsenal? The Gunners pulled off an upset win in the Champions League final two months ago against a Barcelona side near-identical to the Spain team that will play today. Read our full tactical preview here. July 27, 2025 11:44 am Euro 2022 flashback Just under three years ago, the Lionesses made history. After 56 years of hurt, England finally brought football home. Ella Toone opened the scoring at Wembley before old rivals Germany equalised, sending the final to extra-time. Cloe Kelly then did what she does best, coming off the bench to score the winner and giving the country a moment they'll never forget. The Lionesses brought football home. Today, they fight to keep it there. July 27, 2025 11:28 am Dear Sarina… 'So here we are again – the final. You've led dear England to three major finals in four years and a first trophy since 1966. 'Where would we be without you? It's a golden generation but great teams need great leaders and we have you. Never mind Southgate – Sarina, you're the one.' Read the Metro's full open letter to Sarina Wiegman and the Lionesses here. July 27, 2025 11:13 am Kick-off time Switzerland have done a great job of hosting this tournament, with the final taking place at the St. Jakob-Park stadium in Basel. Over 34,000 are expected at the ground, with millions more watching worldwide. The final will kick-off at 5pm UK time. July 27, 2025 11:01 am Welcome! Good morning and welcome to the Metro's LIVE blog where we're counting down until the final of Euro 2025 between England and Spain! The European champions take on the world champions in Basel this evening. Can the Lionesses make history?

Women's Euro 2025 commentators and pundits: Who is hosting the final on BBC and ITV?

THE Lionesses have made their third consecutive major final after the nail-biting victory over Italy. But now everyone's attention has turned to who will be the safe pair of hands to lead us through the coverage of the hotly anticipated final. The final will kick off Sunday, July 27 July at 5pm BST and will be broadcast simultaneously on ITV and the BBC. It will be up to fans which channel they choose for the historic final. Who is hosting the final on BBC? The BBC have pulled out the stops to ensure viewers will be tuning into them, putting the final in the tried and tested hands of an all-female line-up. Gabby Logan Veteran sports presenter Gabby Logan will be leading the coverage of the final, having overseen much of the BBC's coverage on the journey to the final. 9 The future Match of the Day presenter went viral after the last tournament, when England beat Germany, with a thought-provoking speech about the power of the victory. She returns again as a trusted pair of hands to lead the coverage for what could be a tense night of football. Who are the BBC pundits? Logan will be joined by a group of Lioness legends to help provide the insight necessary for a final of this scale. Former England captain Steph Houghton and Lioness legend Ellen White will join Gabby live in the studio in Basel. Houghton is regarded as one of the best centre backs in women's football, while White's success on and off the pitch is unrivalled, in particular her involvement in the historic victory at the 2022 Euros. 9 9 Pitch side will be Alex Scott and Jill Scott, helping to provide their expert analysis on how the players are feeling. Alex Scott has become a well-known face of football coverage, regularly hosting Football Focus. Jill Scott was also involved with White at the 2022 Euro's final, and so will be able to share insights about what it feels like to be the Lionesses, considering many of them will be experiencing their first major final. Who is hosting the final on ITV? The women's Euro final will be broadcast for the first time on ITV, after the BBC had the full broadcasting rights in 2022. ITV's coverage of the dramatic last-four clash has returned the broadcaster's biggest ratings of 2025 so far. 9 A peak of 10.2 million viewers watched across all devices, which is the biggest peak audience of the year across ITV1 and ITVX, while the match also helped make Tuesday the biggest day of the year for ITVX with 17.2m streams. As a result, the broadcast has held nothing back with their presenting line-up as they go up against the Beeb. Laura Woods Regular viewers of football on ITV will be familiar with Laura Woods, who has been part of the line-up of presenters since 2022. The former Sky Sports presenter was the trusted hands for ITV during their coverage of the Women's World Cup in 2023. 9 Since then, Woods has been the lead presenter at the Lionesses biggest matches this tournament, most recently hosting the dramatic semi-final. Who are the ITV pundits? While the BBC have whipped a star-studded all-female presenting line-up, ITV have also pulled out the big guns with their pundits, but it's not been without controversy. In the final, Ian Wright, Emma Hayes and Karen Carney will all be present. Arsenal legend Wright hit the headlines earlier this year after former England international Eni Aluko argued that he should not be presenting women's football, because he was "blocking" opportunities. Wright, a stalwart of football coverage, is a passionate advocate for women's football. 9 What's more, it emerged that Wright has been paying £1,700 a month to fund Kayleigh McDonald's rehab after she suffered an ACL injury while playing for Stoke City last year. After the controversy, Aluko issued an apology and has since been a part of the broadcaster's coverage; however, they have decided to go with Wright for the final. Alongside Wright in the presenting line-up will be England legend Karen Carney, who never fails to show her excitement and passion in the big moments while also providing an excellent judgement on the match. 9 Former Chelsea manager Emma Hayes will also be present for ITV. Hayes has cemented herself as a wise leader in women's football following her dominant stint at Chelsea and now Olympic gold medal-winning leadership of Team USA.

Wrap stars: the secret to the Lionesses' hair-raising style

Chloe Kelly will be remembered for many significant moments at 2025's Euros: a last-minute goal keeping England in the tournament, a signature penalty move and shin pads that featured an image of her wedding day. She is also part of a wider style trend in women's football: the use of pre-wrap, the tape designed to protect skin and secure athletic bandages, repurposed as a headband. If ponytails featured in the conversation at the previous Euros, this is a new addition. In the semi-final against Italy, Kelly wore a ponytail and a wide headband made of blue pre-wrap. Her teammate Lucy Bronze wore the tape as a thinner white headband, with her hair in a bun. Other players for Germany, Spain and Italy have also worn the pre-wrap to secure their hair. An important item in a physiotherapist's kit, pre-wrap comes in blue, yellow, red and pink, and a roll can be bought online for as little as £2.40. Using it for hair was popularised by footballers in the US. At the 2023 World Cup, Alex Morgan and Julie Ertz wore the headbands, prompting the New York Times to declare the tape had found a 'second life as stylish headgear' among players and fans watching their team. Jacqueline Kilikita, the beauty director at Refinery29, discovered the trend via a viral TikTok video from the American player Brittany Wilson Isenhour. 'Without that, I'd never have known that half the headbands on the pitch were actually pre-wrap,' she says. 'Thanks to its shiny finish, the foam material resembles silk or satin when worn as a headband.' Amy Drucquer, the founder of This Fan Girl, a platform for female football supporters, explains why pre-wrap headbands are so popular among female footballers. 'They know like the little hacks that they need to do … I'm sure they do want to look good but, more than anything, they trust themselves to make decisions for their own best performance.' Kilikita says pre-wrap beats alternative styling products. 'Unlike traditional material headbands that move around unless pinned, pre-wrap can mould to the players' heads and grip the hair,' she says. 'Because it's a non-adhesive material, it stays put without tugging, and you can use as much or as little as you need.' A pre-wrap hairband is relatively subtle compared with the statement styles seen at men's tournaments – such as Phil Foden's bleached crop for Euro 2020. Drucquer says this because there is already 'increased levels of scrutiny [on women's appearance]'. She adds that Foden's hairstyle was a tribute to Paul Gascoigne in the 1996 tournament but 'there is no one to look back to here. With the women's game, they are the ones setting [the precedent]'. If Foden's hair spawned a trend for bleached crops in the summer of 2021, could Kelly's pre-wrap headband do the same this year? 'Absolutely,' says Kilikata. 'The Lionesses are trendsetters when it comes to getting hair off your face. They make convenience look chic. Plus, everyone loves a resourceful – and cheap – hair hack.'
