Marvel's Thunderbolts Is a Beautiful Mess—And We Loved Every Minute

Getting the chance to attend an early screening of Thunderbolts was an incredible experience. From the opening scenes, one performance that stood out was Gabrielle Byndloss. As a stunning African American actress, she brings grace, strength, and emotional depth to every moment she's on screen. Her presence adds a grounded authenticity to the film, and it's great to see Marvel giving more space to powerful, nuanced women of color in this universe.
Thunderbolts marks a bold step for Marvel as it dives into a more morally grey, grounded world. Instead of a traditional superhero story, we get a messy, chaotic team of anti-heroes and misfits tasked with missions that aren't about saving the world—they're about surviving it. The setup is exciting and hints at bigger, more complicated stories down the road.
The film definitely isn't perfect. It still suffers from some of Marvel's old habits, especially throwing in humor at moments when the story would be better served with some breathing room. Emotional scenes sometimes get interrupted by jokes that feel a little out of place. But honestly? It doesn't take too much away from how entertaining the ride is.
David Harbour absolutely steals the show as Red Guardian, mixing comedy and tragedy in a way only he can. Florence Pugh once again proves she's one of the MCU's brightest stars, bringing heart, humor, and toughness to Yelena. Their chemistry is one of the biggest highlights of the movie, providing both emotional depth and laugh-out-loud moments.
Ghost, unfortunately, doesn't get as much to do as she deserves. She's a fascinating character with tons of potential, but here she feels a little sidelined. It's disappointing because her powers and backstory are so rich—hopefully Marvel gives her the spotlight she deserves in future projects.

The action is tighter and more hand-to-hand focused than usual MCU fare, fitting the grittier tone really well. While the middle act does drag a bit, the third act brings some great payoffs, both emotionally and action-wise.
At the end of the day, Thunderbolts is messy, dark, and rough around the edges—but that's exactly what makes it such a refreshing entry into the MCU. It's not trying to be another perfect superhero movie. It's about broken people trying to find their way, and that rawness is exactly its charm. With strong performances, solid action, and an exciting setup for what's next, Thunderbolts easily stands out as one of the more interesting Marvel projects in a while.

Thunderbolts hits theaters May 2, 2025. If you're looking for something a little different from the usual Marvel formula—but still packed with heart, action, and standout performances—go see it. You won't regret it.

James Gunn Says He 'Didn't Feel Guilt' Leaving Marvel for DC: 'I Was Fired' — GeekTyrant
James Gunn has officially planted his flag in the DC Universe with Superman , and he's not looking back. During a recent episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Gunn was asked if he felt any guilt about leaving Marvel for DC. His response was blunt and honest: 'No, I just shook my head. I didn't feel that way because I was fired. I didn't feel guilt at all. I mean, I had to take a job! I took a job [with] people that I also really liked, and that was it.' Gunn, of course, directed all three Guardians of the Galaxy films, and even shot the Thor: The Dark World mid-credits scene. But back in 2018, things took a turn. Disney cut ties with him over resurfaced tweets, leaving Gunn thinking his career might be done. 'I thought my career was over.' That's when Warner Bros. entered the picture. They initially reached out to him about Superman , but Gunn pitched The Suicide Squad instead. And in a twist of timing straight out of a comic book storyline, the same day Warner called, Disney reached back out, seemingly ready to bring him back into the fold. So Gunn found himself sitting at Kevin Feige's house, being asked if he was going to direct Superman . Eventually, he did return to Marvel one last time to finish Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 , before fully committing to DC, this time as co-head of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. Despite the rocky exit, Gunn made it clear that the folks at Marvel were never the problem: 'Listen, there are people that I'm not that happy with over there [at Disney], but that certainly wasn't the Marvel guys, you know? They were completely supportive. '[Marvel Studios Co-President] Louis D'Esposito called me all the time. Lou and Kevin were great. So it certainly wasn't them.' Now, Gunn is fully focused on reshaping DC's cinematic universe. Chapter One: Gods and Monsters kicked off with Creature Commandos and now Superman . On deck are Supergirl , Peacemaker Season 2, Lanterns , and more, as DC aims to roll out two movies and multiple shows—live-action and animated—each year. For Gunn, the past is behind him. He didn't burn bridges, he just found a new one to build.

Watching ‘X-Men' 25 Years Ago Was a Game-Changing Moment
It's hard to describe what it was like to sit down, 25 years ago today, to watch X-Men. I was born in 1980 and grew up loving and adoring superheroes. The Christopher Reeve Superman movies were everything to me. Posters and toys for Tim Burton's Batman films were all over my room. And each week, I'd go to the local comic book shop to pick up new issues of X-Men, X-Force, X-O Manowar, Spawn, and so many others. The 1990s in particular were a golden age for comic books, but on the big screen, there wasn't much there. Then, on July 14, 2000, a movie was released that had Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Jean Grey, Professor X, Magneto, Mystique, Sabertooth, and more, all on screen at the same time, in the same movie. Quite simply, there had never been anything like that before, and nothing would be the same ever again. Of course, in the six decades or so between the rise of the comic book superhero and the release of X-Men, Hollywood had many, many attempts to bring superheroes to the big screen. And some, like the aforementioned DC films, really worked. But in the case of Marvel, all we had were campy, hard-to-see Captain America or Fantastic Four movies. We were still two years away from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. Still eight years away from Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. But, on that fateful July day, Marvel's most famous team made its big-screen debut, with incredible results. I remember sitting down for the movie not knowing what to expect. The internet, of course, existed in 2000, and people had lots of thoughts on these new, dark costumes for the characters. It would be many, many years before film studios were okay with giving these characters more comics-accurate costumes. So it was hard to know whether or not this film would be true to those characters and comics or treat them like playthings. Then the movie starts, and the first thing we see is a young boy being separated from his parents at Auschwitz. That made it very clear this was taking these characters incredibly seriously and treating them with the respect they deserved. That then carried over into the story about mutants being outcasts, about Wolverine finding a place among his people, and so much more. Looking back on the film, not only was its mere existence groundbreaking, but the casting, sets, and so much more have impacted what came later. Just last year we saw Hugh Jackman return to Wolverine in an R-rated movie that grossed over a billion dollars. It doesn't get much more obvious than that. Unfortunately, you can't talk about X-Men without mentioning the shadow cast on the film now. X-Men was directed by Bryan Singer, a once beloved filmmaker who was later accused of numerous accounts of sexual assault and misconduct. Admittedly, those horrors can make it difficult to separate the art from the artist, especially when three years later he directed the even better sequel, X2. But even so, X-Men wasn't just Singer's creation. It was all the actors, writers, producers, craftspeople, studio executives, and more who worked on it. One of whom was a little-known associate producer named Kevin Feige, who would take the experience on to much bigger and better things at Marvel. He'd even get control of the X-Men decades later when Marvel's parent company, Disney, purchased Fox. A new X-Men movie, the first under that banner, is now in the works. Eventually, X-Men went on to gross about $300 million worldwide against a production budget of $75 million. It was a hit and gave 20th Century Fox confidence to move ahead with both the X-Men and other characters. We got Daredevil movies, Fantastic Four movies, and beyond. It also gave other studios, Sony in particular, proof that audiences would show up to movies that didn't just have Superman or Batman in them. Two years later, Spider-Man was released and had the largest opening weekend of all time. So as we sit here in 2025, with a new Superman movie in theaters, a new Fantastic Four movie coming in mere weeks, and a fifth Avengers movie in production, we can trace every one of those seeds back to July 14, 2000, when the X-Men made their big screen debut. The film shouted to the world that audiences everywhere love all superheroes, and the rest is history. Want more io9 news?
