PENAMPANG: Minister of Entrepreneurship and Cooperatives Development, Datuk Ewon Benedick, launched the Tekun Carnival at Tamu Ground, Kampung Inobong. Ewon expressed his appreciation to the management of Tekun Nasional, especially its Chairman Dato' Abdullah Sani bin Abdul Hamid, for agreeing to hold the mini carnival in Kampung Inobong, within his parliamentary constituency. He said community-led programmes like carnivals that are not merely economic or cultural events, rather, a reflection of the nation's aspiration to holistically develop rural communities; economically, socially, and culturally in line with the Malaysia Madani vision introduced by the Prime Minister. 'Tekun Nasional, under my agency (Kuskop), provides micro-financing to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). 'It is highly popular among small entrepreneurs seeking capital to grow their businesses. 'Since its establishment in 1998, Tekun had played a vital role in developing micro-entrepreneurs nationwide. Besides capital financing, the agency also offers business opportunities, guidance, support services, and a network for entrepreneurs,' said Ewon.
Advertisement He said as of April 2025, Tekun had disbursed RM10.31 billion to 598,969 entrepreneurs across the country. 'In Sabah alone, RM1.18 billion had been distributed to 65,939 entrepreneurs. Within the Penampang parliamentary, RM36 million has been channelled to 1,730 entrepreneurs during the same period. 'This support would help entrepreneurs grow their businesses and indirectly creates job opportunities for the surrounding community,' Ewon added. He said events like the mini carnival are excellent examples of how economic development can be integrated with the cultural identity of the people of Sabah. 'For the Kadazan Dusun and other indigenous communities, the Tamu is more than just a trading space. It is a place to meet, exchange ideas, and strengthen community bonds.' Ewon also shared that since the scheme was introduced, a total of RM7.5 million has been allocated to 1,809 entrepreneurs in Sabah, particularly small traders and vendors operating in Tamu markets. He emphasised that strengthening the ecosystem with digital payment systems, modern packaging, online market access, and cooperative support would not only boost the economy but also help preserve cultural heritage for future generations. To date, five major Tekun Madani Carnivals had been successfully held across Malaysia; namely in Sabah, Selangor, and Penang, where it generated RM5.8 million in sales. He said the success was made possible through strategic collaboration with TikTok Shop Malaysia, which expanded digital marketing opportunities for entrepreneurs. Meanwhile, Ewon also said the Tekun Madani Carnival, held for the first time in Kota Belud at Kadamaian Square Hall, Taginambur, was another successful milestone. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? DPM Fadillah: 'Appreciation for the People' package shows Madani govt's commitment to rakyat

Fadillah says the initiative demonstrates the Prime Minister's recognition of the rakyat as the backbone of national stability, while reaffirming that the government remains steadfast in its policies and direction. – Bernama photo KUCHING (July 23): The 'Appreciation for the People' financial package announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today reflects the Madani government's strong commitment to the welfare and trust of the rakyat, said Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof. Describing the package as a message of unity and gratitude, Fadillah said it acknowledges the contributions of Malaysians from all backgrounds, including those in rural areas, urban centres, civil service, and agriculture. 'This is clear proof that 'Malaysia Madani' is not just a slogan but a national movement that we indulge in successfully together,' said Fadillah in a statement. He said the initiative demonstrates the Prime Minister's recognition of the rakyat as the backbone of national stability, while reaffirming that the government remains steadfast in its policies and direction. 'The Prime Minister has succeeded in instilling confidence that fiscal reforms are on the right track – with the people's support as the main thrust,' he said. Fadillah pointed to the country's strengthening economic momentum, noting that Malaysia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 4.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2025, with a 4.5 per cent projection for the second quarter. He also highlighted Malaysia's jump of 11 spots to 23rd in the World Competitiveness Index 2025, and the ringgit's five per cent appreciation – currently trading at RM4.23 to the US dollar – placing it among Asia's top five performing currencies. 'The success is not just a figure on paper – they reflect increased investment, job creation, and stronger social policies for the people,' he said. Fadillah said the measures further demonstrate the effectiveness of the Madani government's approach in safeguarding public interest. 'As a Sarawakian, I have seen for myself the true meaning of a comprehensive policy. 'The increase in paddy floor prices, rubber incentives, and grassroots programmes such as Sejati Madani are tangible responses to the needs of the rural communities,' he said. He cited the expansion of the Madani Village Adoption Programme to 200 villages, with a target of 1,000 Madani-adopted schools by the end of 2025, as well as the Madani Rahmah Sales, now extended to all 600 state constituencies nationwide. As Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), Fadillah also welcomed the government's efforts in restructuring energy subsidies and electricity tariffs. Beginning this month, 85 per cent of domestic consumers are expected to see up to 14 per cent reductions in electricity bills. Meanwhile, targeted RON95 subsidies will lower fuel prices to RM1.99 per litre, with savings redirected to benefit Malaysians instead of foreign users. Fadillah said these reforms do not burden the rakyat — they bring fairness and relief to the majority. Fadillah, who is also responsible for Sabah and Sarawak Affairs, expressed appreciation for the additional public holiday announced for Sept 15, in conjunction with Malaysia Day. 'Let us all unite, join forces, and continue to support the Madani agenda that gives meaning to the people's lives. 'From villages to cities, from the Peninsula to Borneo – all Malaysians deserve to enjoy fair and equitable progress,' he said.

13th Plan to focus on digital tools, e-invoice

Published on: Wednesday, July 23, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 23, 2025 By: Sisca Humphrey Text Size: Ewon emphasised that future policies under 13MP would also support inclusive business (IB) and social enterprise (SE) models to ensure that development benefits are more evenly distributed. PENAMPANG: The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) will focus on helping micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) transition into the digital economy, including adopting the e-Invoice system. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said digital tools are no longer optional but essential for business resilience. 'We want to see MSMEs adapting to digital tools, including e-Invoice, as part of their business operations under the 13th Malaysia Plan,' he said. He made the remarks during the launch of the Madani Entrepreneurs Seminar: e-Invoice organised by the National Entrepreneurship Institute (Insken) at Penampang Cultural Hall, here, on Tuesday. The seminar is part of a 23-stop nationwide tour targeting 20,000 entrepreneurs, aimed at promoting awareness and adoption of the e-Invoice platform. 'So far, over 11,000 entrepreneurs have taken part in the sessions, showing strong interest and readiness. 'Entrepreneurs want to understand what e-Invois is and how it can be integrated into their daily business and we are responding to that need,' he said. He said Insken and SME Corp are working with the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) to expand outreach and ensure businesses are ready before implementation. Ewon emphasised that future policies under 13MP would also support inclusive business (IB) and social enterprise (SE) models to ensure that development benefits are more evenly distributed. 'Inclusive business and social enterprise models will be given more focus as we strengthen the entrepreneurial landscape under 13MP,' he said. He also assured that Sabah and Sarawak would not be left behind in federal initiatives, citing programmes like Tamu Desa, targeted financing schemes for rural traders and special grants for Bumiputera entrepreneurs in Borneo. 'We want entrepreneurs and cooperatives in Sabah to feel included in national policies, that's why we design initiatives specific to Borneo's needs. 'One-size-fits-all approaches don't work. Local business challenges require local strategies,' he stressed. Speaking to the media after the seminar, Ewon welcomed the appointment of Insken's new CEO from Sabah, calling it a reflection of confidence in East Malaysians to lead national agencies. 'I want to see our Sabahan CEO prove that East Malaysians can also lead federal agencies with excellence. 'It's not where you're from, it's your commitment, vision and capacity to serve the country,' he said. Also present were Insken Board of Trustees Chairman Mustaffa Kamil Ayub, Insken Chief Executive Officer Viviantie Sarjuni, board members and agency heads under the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Relocation for traders as work to upgrade Kepayan Square starts

Published on: Wednesday, July 23, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 23, 2025 By: Sisca Humphrey Text Size: Ewon handing over a canopy to one of the traders at Kepayan Square - Kuskop Pic PENAMPANG: A total of 72 small traders from Kepayan Square began preparing for a temporary relocation this week, as construction work starts on long-awaited upgrade to the public market space. Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (Kuskop) Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the Government is taking steps to ensure that traders continue to earn a living while improvements are made to their work environment. At a handover ceremony on Tuesday, Ewon distributed canopies, tables and chairs to the affected traders, who will move to a temporary trading site nearby for the next few months. 'We want to ensure that even during this transition, their livelihood is protected,' he said. 'This is about providing a safer and more comfortable space for the community to trade in the long run.' The RM2.4 million upgrade is being jointly funded by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), City Hall (DBKK) and the Kapayan state constituency. KPKT and DBKK are each contributing RM1 million, while Kapayan Assemblywoman Datuk Jannie Lasimbang is allocating RM400,000 from her constituency fund. Ewon said planning for the project started after he was elected Penampang MP in 2022, when he and Jannie visited the site with DBKK officials to assess its condition. 'What we saw back then was that the traders needed more than just shelter from the sun and rain. The space needed proper facilities, a roof, better flooring and proper drainage,' he said. He thanked Jannie for taking the lead in pushing for the project and raising the matter with the KPKT Minister Nga Kor Ming. 'This is a good example of what can happen when local and federal leaders work together,' he said. Jannie said the upgrade was something she had been pursuing since 2019, after hearing concerns directly from the traders. She said the location has always served more than just commercial purposes. 'This space is not just about business. It's a place where people meet, talk, share food and build connection. 'Once it has a proper roof and layout, it can serve the whole community during festive seasons, government programmes or even just a normal weekend,' she said. Also present were DBKK Deputy Director-General (Operations) Robert Lipon and local leaders involved in coordinating the relocation plan. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
