She and Jagger began seeing each other in 1966 and became one of the most glamorous and notorious couples of 'Swinging London,' with Ms. Faithfull once declaring that if LSD 'wasn't meant to happen, it wouldn't have been invented.' Their rejection of conventional values was defined by a widely publicized 1967 drug bust that left Jagger and Richards briefly in jail and Ms. Faithfull identified in tabloids as 'Naked Girl At Stones Party,' a label she would find humiliating and inescapable.
'One of the hazards of reforming your evil ways is that some people won't let go of their mind's eye of you as a wild thing,' she wrote in 'Memories, Dreams and Reflections," a 2007 memoir.
Jagger and Richards often cited bluesmen and early rock 'n rollers as their prime influences, but Ms. Faithfull and her close friend Anita Pallenberg, Richards's longtime partner, opened the band to new ways of thinking. Both were worldlier than their boyfriends at the time and helped transform the Stones' songwriting and personas, whether as muses or as collaborators.
Ms. Faithfull helped inspire such Stones songs as the mellow tribute 'She Smiled Sweetly' and the lustful 'Let's Spend the Night Together.' It was Ms. Faithful who lent Jagger the Russian novel 'The Master and Margarita,' which was the basis for 'Sympathy for the Devil,' and who first recorded and contributed lyrics to the Stones' dire 'Sister Morphine,' notably the opening line, 'Here I lie in my hospital bed.' Ms. Faithfull's drug use helped shape such jaded takes on the London rock scene as 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' and 'Live with Me,' while her time with Jagger also coincided with one of his most vulnerable love songs, 'Wild Horses.'

On her own, the London-born Ms. Faithfull specialized at first in genteel ballads, among them 'Come Stay With Me,' 'Summer Nights,' and 'This Little Bird.' But even in her teens, Ms. Faithfull sang in a fragile alto that suggested knowledge and burdens far beyond her years. Her voice would later crack and coarsen, and her life and work after splitting with Jagger in 1970 was one of looking back and carrying on through emotional and physical pain.
She had become addicted to heroin in the late '60s, suffered a miscarriage while seven months pregnant, and nearly died from an overdose of sleeping pills. (Jagger, meanwhile, had an affair with Pallenberg and had a baby with actor Marsha Hunt). By the early '70s, Ms. Faithfull was living in the streets of London and had lost custody of the son, Nicholas, she had with her estranged husband, the gallery owner John Dunbar. She would also battle anorexia and hepatitis, was treated for breast cancer, broke her hip in a fall, and was hospitalized with COVID-19 in 2020.
She shared everything, uncensored, in her memoirs and in her music, notably 'Broken English,' which came out in 1979 and featured her seething 'Why'd Ya Do It' and conflicted 'Guilt,' in which she chants 'I feel guilt, I feel guilt, though I know I've done no wrong.' Other albums included 'Dangerous Acquaintances,' 'Strange Weather,' the live 'Blazing Away,' and, most recently, 'She Walks in Beauty.' Though Ms. Faithfull was defined by the 1960s, her sensibility often reached back to the pre-rock world of German cabaret, and she covered numerous songs by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, including 'Ballad of the Soldier's Wife' and the 'sung' ballet 'The Seven Deadly Sins.'

Her interests extended to theater, film, and television. Ms. Faithfull began acting in the 1960s, including an appearance in Jean-Luc Godard's 'Made In U.S.A.' and stage roles in 'Hamlet' and Chekhov's 'Three Sisters.' She would later appear in such films as 'Marie Antoinette' and 'The Girl from Nagasaki,' and the TV series 'Absolutely Fabulous,' in which she was cast as — and did not flinch from playing — God.
Ms. Faithful was married three times, and in recent years dated her manager, Francois Ravard. Jagger was her most famous lover, but other men in her life included Richards ('so great and memorable,' she would say of their one-night stand), David Bowie, and the early rock star Gene Pitney. Among the rejected: Bob Dylan, who had been so taken that he was writing a song about her, until Ms. Faithfull, pregnant with her son at the time, turned him down.
'Without warning, he turned into Rumpelstiltskin,' she wrote in 'Faithfull,' published in 1994. 'He went over to the typewriter, took a sheaf of papers and began ripping them up into smaller and smaller pieces, after which he let them fall into the wastepaper basket.'

Ms. Faithfull's heritage was one of intrigue, decadence, and fallen empires. Her father was a British intelligence officer during World War II who helped saved her mother from the Nazis in Vienna. Ms. Faithfull's more distant ancestors included various Austro-Hungarian aristocrats and Count Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, a 19th century Austrian whose last name and scandalous novel 'Venus in Furs' helped create the term 'masochism.'
Ms. Faithfull's parents separated when she was 6 and her childhood would include time in a convent and in what she would call a 'nutty' sex-obsessed commune. By her teens, she was reading Simone de Beauvoir, listening to Odetta and Joan Baez, and singing in folk clubs. Through the London art scene, she met Dunbar, who introduced her to Paul McCartney and other celebrities. Dunbar also co-founded the Indica Gallery, where John Lennon would say he met Yoko Ono.
'The threads of a dozen little scenes were invisibly twining together,' she wrote in her memoir. 'All these people — gallery owners, photographers, pop stars, aristocrats and assorted talented layabouts more or less invented the scene in London, so I guess I was present at the creation.'
Her future was set in March 1964, when she attended a recording party for one of London's hot young bands, the Rolling Stones. Scorning the idea that she and Jagger immediately fell for each other, she would regard the Stones as 'yobby schoolboys' and witnessed Jagger fighting with his then-girlfriend, the model Chrissie Shrimpton, so in tears that her false eyelashes were peeling off.
But she was deeply impressed by one man, Stones manager Andrew 'Loog' Oldham, who looked 'powerful and dangerous and very sure of himself.' A week later, Oldham sent her a telegram, asking her to come to London's Olympic Studios. With Jagger and Richards looking on, Oldham played her a demo of a 'very primitive' song, 'As Tears Go By,' which Ms. Faithfull needed just two takes to complete.

Ms. Faithfull maintained a singing career well into the 2010s.
'It's an absolutely astonishing thing for a boy of 20 to have written,' Ms. Faithfull wrote in her 1994 memoir. 'A song about a woman looking back nostalgically on her life. The uncanny thing is that Mick should have written those words so long before everything happened. It's almost as is if our whole relationship was prefigured in that song.'

If you're a music lover and enjoy a bit of drama, you must have heard that controversy is brewing over the artwork of Sabrina Carpenter's upcoming album 'Man's Best Friend'. The suggestive – but hardly sexually explicit - cover features the buzzy 'Espresso' hitmaker on her knees in front of a faceless man who is pulling her hair back. And the release of the image has caused much debate. Many argue that Carpenter's MO has always been pop-horniness, and that she has every right to express herself and her sexuality – in this case what some may perceive as a submissive kink - in any way she sees fit and crucially, without being policed or harassed; others see this image as degrading, regressive and promoting traditional gender roles. At the end of the day, it's her album cover and can't we just let her be? Some hyper-conservative and hyper-progressive corners of the internet clearly disagree, and the reactions have been intense – which is hardly surprising, considering sexuality has always rubbed some people up the wrong way. Plus, scandal is hardly new for musicians, as artists have sparked outrage with their album covers for decades, leading some to be censored or even banned. From nudity to the open courting of outrage via political statements (and sometimes, downright poor taste), here are 20 provocative covers that rocked the music world and faced the most backlash. We proceed chronologically. While hardly controversial compared to some of the other covers in this list, that's a downright unfortunate title to go with this image. And isn't the one on the right an uncanny dead ringer for a young Stephen Fry? Unsettling. It's not one of the Fab Four's most famous albums, but certainly their most notorious. Photographer Robert Whitaker took a snap of the band in white butcher's coats, surrounded by raw meat and dismembered baby dolls. Paul McCartney claimed it was a comment against the Vietnam War. US retailers were shocked and refused to stock the album, leading to it being withdrawn and reissued with a more vanilla alternative. Today, the 'Butcher cover' is available in pirated form. Those lucky enough to own an original pressing have an expensive and coveted piece of music history. The cover for the avant-garde 'Two Virgins' captures John Lennon and Yoko Ono completely naked. It sparked outrage, leading distributors to clandestinely sell the album wrapped in brown paper bags. At the end of the 1960s, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker founded a supergroup with Steve Winwood and Ric Grech. They released only one album together, and to mark the occasion, they enlisted photographer Bob Seidemann. His image features a young topless girl holding a model spaceship. The image was considered deeply problematic and was promptly banned and replaced with a more classic shot of the band members. The Stones have had several album cover controversies over the years, including 'Beggar's Banquet''s artwork which featured a graffiti covered bathroom wall. However, it's the band's ninth studio album, designed by Andy Warhol, matched with its inuendo-heavy title, which rubbed censors up the wrong way. It features a suggestive denim-clad crotch and the original pressing of the LP also had a working fly which unzipped to reveal white underwear. The cover was famously banned in Spain, which was under the fascist rule of General Franco at the time. Photographer Eric Boman's shot of Constanze Karoli and Eveline Grunwald led many US outlets to censor the image, feeling uncomfortable with the sight of scantily clad models. Thankfully, most European distributors weren't irked by the sight of lingerie. There's misguided and then there's what was going on in the minds of German rockers Scorpions in 1976. The album titled 'Virgin Killer' depicts a naked 10-year-old girl with broken glass covering her genitalia. The controversy led to a bump in sales, but it remains to this day one of the most censored album covers in music history. NB: Euronews Culture has decided to blur the image since this album cover has been deemed by many as child pornography. Sex Pistols' only studio album caused plenty of pearl clutching when it was released in 1977. A record shop owner in Nottingham, UK, was arrested for displaying the records. This led to an obscenity-related court case, as he was charged for contravening the Indecent Advertisement Act 1889. The charges were eventually dropped. All because of the word 'bollocks'. All it took was a female-led punk outfit appearing topless and covered in mud for everyone to collectively lose their minds. Considering the sheer amount of topless men on album covers, the only words that come to mind are: deal with it. With an album title like that, it was pretty obvious that the (cheeky) cover image would cause some outrage. There are no words. It's one of the most famous album covers in the world but the artwork for Nirvana's grunge masterpiece proved divisive at the time of its release. It features a photo taken by Kirk Weddle of a four-month-old nude baby named Spencer Elden. Kurt Cobain refused for it to be censored, but did state that he would agree to a sticker covering the penis, reading: 'If you're offended by this, you must be a closet pedophile.' It didn't come to that. However, several decades later, Elden attempted to sue Nirvana for violating US federal child pornography protections with the image, arguing that it resulted in 'lifelong damages'. The suit was eventually dismissed. Rap pioneer Ice Cube was no stranger to controversy, what with the headline-grabbing lyrics of N.W.A's 'Fuck Tha Police.' But with 'Death Certificate', he sparked further outrage with the image of a corpse identified as Uncle Sam. The famous rap-metal band's debut album depicts the infamous self-immolation of Vietnamese monk Thích Quảng Đức in 1963, protesting the persecution of Buddhists by South Vietnam's US-backed government. The graphic image caused outrage. Not displeased with the situation, frontman Zach de la Rocha famously burned a US flag at Woodstock '99. The question remains: Could anyone really be surprised with a name like Rage Against The Machine? Heavy metal has always been a genre that has courted controversy, and there are numerous album covers that have shocked over the years. For their 1994 album, titled 'Youthanasia', Megadeth wanted to comment on the fact that society was euthanizing the young. The visual depiction of this ended up being a woman hanging babies by their feet on her washing line. A bit on-the-nose, but it was enough to get everyone freaking out. Marilyn Manson has always pushed the envelope when it comes to taste, and the controversial rocker did just that in 2000 for the album 'Holy Wood (In The Shadow Of The Valley Of Death)'. The disturbing cover depicts Manson as a crucified Christ, which led US stores to ban it completely. Considering that the controversial shock rocker's intended purpose was to critique censorship and that the previous albums 'Mechanical Animals' and 'Portrait Of An American Family' also sparked moral panic, the reaction to the artwork must have delighted him. European fans of New York rockers The Strokes were treated with the original cover of their stunning debut album, featuring a leather gloved hand on a naked hip. The US were quick to call foul, however, disapproving of the suggestive nature of the image. The band had to swap the gorgeous shot by Colin Lane – who spontaneously took a picture of his then-girlfriend after she came out of the shower. The replacement? A psychedelic but far less impactful depiction of subatomic particle tracks. In 2001, US hip-hop group The Coup, composed of Boots Riley and DJ Pam the Funktress, wanted to make a statement about destroying capitalism. Their idea: pose in front of the World Trade Center on fire. The image was conceived prior to 9/11 and the eerie timing of the album's November release meant that they had to replace the image with a martini glass on fire. Probably for the best. The cover for Ted Nugent's album was pulled before it hit shelves - and considering the misogynist credentials of this particular image, it might have been for the best. The sleeve for 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' saw a painting of a naked Kanye West being straddled by a winged female monster with sharp teeth. The controversial rapper refused for the image be pulled, but the record label reached a compromise by pixelating the image in some territories. Sabrina Carpenter's 'Man's Best Friend' is released on 29 August.

CBS News contributor David Begnaud's latest installment of Dear David features inspiring stories sent by viewers, including the story of a diver who helped a family recover memories after a tragedy, and of two university students who help their friend with a medical condition. Diver's recovery mission A Wisconsin man who built an online following by cleaning rivers and rescuing lost items helped a grieving family recover precious memories after a fatal car accident. Ed Bieber, known as "Ed the Diver" on social media, dove into a frozen river near Wasau, Wisconsin, in March to retrieve two phones that had fallen into the water during a tragic accident that killed Bobby Nilles, a 43-year-old man from the Wasau area. Nilles died after his vehicle landed upside down in the frozen river on his way to work. His wife was first on the scene and lost her phone in the water while trying to save him. Nilles' phone was also at the bottom of the river. Derek Steinke, a friend of Nilles, reached out to Bieber on Facebook asking for help recovering the phones. Bieber, who has gained popularity documenting his river cleanup efforts and finding lost items ranging from fishing lures to drones, didn't hesitate to help. He successfully retrieved both phones, allowing the family to recover photos and messages they thought were lost forever. When the family offered payment, he declined. "From the bottom of our hearts, we wanted to help the family get their memories back," Bieber said. Bieber's diving hobby led him to meet his now-fiancée Christie Barlament, who purchased a mangled Barbie doll he had found in a lake. The couple, both 40, say their shared passion for giving back drives their underwater cleanup efforts. "I'm getting a little emotional here. There are a lot of great people out there. Ed is one of those great people," said Steinke. "My main goal is to clean up the waterways ... just do what I can as a person and make an impact," Bieber said. Students support classmate with medical condition Two Southeastern Louisiana University students have become lifelines for a classmate battling a nervous system disorder that can cause her to lose consciousness without warning. Reagan McCoy, a senior at the university, lives with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, a condition that causes her heart rate to spike and her body to shut down unpredictably. The disorder has sent her to the hospital more than a dozen times in the past year. "I get lightheaded... I stop remembering where I am," McCoy said. Her classmate Bailey Babin has learned to recognize the warning signs and springs into action when McCoy needs help. "I tell Bailey like, 'Tag, you're it.' And she knows to kind of stop what she's doing if she can get me outside of the classroom as fast as possible," McCoy said. During episodes, Babin places McCoy's head on her lap and times the unconscious periods. If they exceed five minutes, she calls an ambulance. McCoy's boyfriend, Peyton Loving, also provides constant support as she navigates her health challenges while pursuing her degree. "Without Bailey or Peyton, I honestly don't know where I would be," McCoy said. Despite her health struggles, McCoy is graduating early from the university. She credits her friends with making her feel like more than her medical condition. "Her health problems don't define who she is. She's a lot more than that," Loving said. Babin, who describes McCoy as meaning "quite literally the world" to her, said she never questions her commitment to helping her friend. "When it comes to my friend's health and my friend's wellbeing, I'm gonna be there," Babin said.
