'It was clear the best team won'

BBC News15-02-2025
Fulham boss Marco Silva has been speaking to BBC Match Of The Day after their win today: "It was tight just in terms of score, because everything else it was not tight at all. Football can be be unpredictable but it was clear today the best team on the pitch won. "Until the 35th minute of the game we were leading 1-0 but it should have been 2-0 or 3-0. Chris Wood scored with a great finish - he is on fire - but we controlled the game well. We showed the patience and created chances. "I told the players to keep the same principles and the second half was the same. One team creating, one team dominant, one team controlling. We had more chances to score a third than they did to equalise."On Adama Traore's display: "A great performance from Adama. It was a great cross with his left foot. Nice to see that quality and a nice header from Emile Smith Rowe."Adama had two good moments to score as well. It was a great performance from him. More balanced on and off the ball as well and I like to see Adama like that. He was switched on every time, and not with moments off. He was active on and off the ball. We need this type of quality performance."

Joe Cole tells £40m star he 'has to leave' Liverpool this summer

Joe Cole says Harvey Elliott 'has to leave' leaving Liverpool for a club that can guarantee him regular playing time. Elliott enjoyed a short break on the back of Liverpool's title-winning season before jetting off with Lee Carsley's England squad for this summer's European Under-21 Championship. Considering he made just two starts in the Premier League last term, Elliott could have been forgiven for starting out a little rusty in England colours – but the midfielder was anything but in Slovakia. The 22-year-old racked up five goals in six appearances to help the Young Lions defend their title from 2023 and was subsequently named Player of the Tournament for his excellent contribution. But now that the dust has settled on England's celebrations, the youngster faces a tough decision over his future at Anfield. According to talkSPORT, the Reds would be prepared to let Elliott leave should they receive an offer in the region of £40million for the ex-Fulham man – and Newcastle have been credited with an interest, as well as Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig. Discussing Elliott's options on The Dressing Room Podcast, ex-Liverpool, Chelsea and England winger Cole said: 'He hasn't played enough football. 'He's gone there [Liverpool], he's 22 now. He's got personality on the pitch. 'Jurgen Klopp, when he left, said one of the regrets he had at Liverpool was he didn't play this kid enough. 'So he's in this situation where he's won Player of the Tournament, he's scored five goals from midfield. 'Some of the best players in the world have won that award and he looked at home, he looked like a leader, he scored some great goals.' Cole was convinced that Elliott had 'made up his mind' over his Liverpool future after watching the youngster give an 'emotional' interview while working for Channel 4 at the U21 Euros. He added: 'He's got a decision to make. He hasn't broken into the Liverpool team regularly, he's 22… you can see it in him, he was getting emotional after one of the games when he did the interview for us on the TV. 'What I took from that was that he was so happy that he's playing and being the man. I thought I saw it in his mind that he's made up his mind. 'Even if Liverpool say, 'We want you to stay'… unless he's saying, 'I need to start every single game', which they can't offer him, he has to leave.' Cole's former England team-mate, Micah Richards, meanwhile, can understand Elliott's frustrations given the limited playing time he was given by Arne Slot last season. However, Richards, discussing Elliott's predicament on The Rest Is Football podcast, said there was 'not a chance' he would sell the midfielder if he was in Liverpool's position. 'If I'm Liverpool, I'm not selling him. Not one bit! I'm not selling him!' the ex- Manchester City defender Richards said. 'It's similar to the Cole Palmer situation when he was at Manchester City. Okay, you've got Phil Foden, you've got Kevin De Bruyne at the time and other young players coming through… 'But I just think, if he [Elliott] could get a good Premier League team on loan for the season [then he should stay at Liverpool]. 'Mohamed Salah signed a two-year deal and a year from now he might not be the same player that we've been used to over the years. 'Elliott can play that position so well and I would just wait. 'I wouldn't get rid of him now, not a chance.' Is £40m a fair price for Harvey Elliott? For more stories like this, check our sport page. Ryan Reynolds tipped to sign Premier League star who has contract on the table

Wrexham are looking to spend big this summer as they prepare for life in the Championship and have been tipped to sign a Premier League club captain by a former Man United star Wrexham have been backed to land a major signing thanks to their Hollywood pulling power. The Red Dragons, owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are expected to splash the cash this summer after celebrating promotion from League One in April. The Welsh side have already strengthened ready for life in the Championship with the additions of Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie and Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward. More new faces are anticipated in the coming weeks, with Fulham captain Tom Cairney believed to be high on manager Phil Parkinson 's wish list. ‌ It's been reported that Wrexham have already made a move for the 34-year-old midfielder, whose contract at Craven Cottage ended in June. Negotiations for a one-year extension between Cairney and Fulham are said to have taken place, but Wrexham are said to be offering a substantial salary package and more opportunities for regular game time. ‌ Cairney, who has represented Scotland twice, featured in 23 Premier League matches for Fulham last season. Whether he will extend his tenure with the club into an eleventh season remains uncertain. However, former Fulham and Manchester United forward Louis Saha thinks Wrexham could tempt him away. The Frenchman suggested that the club's elevated profile could influence Cairney's decision. "Players will always consider what benefits their career," Saha told Coin Poker. "For Tom Cairney, he needs guarantees that he'll have playing time, that he's part of a plan. He'll want to know the club are growing. "For most players, they need to know where the club is headed and what they'll be offered. Of course, there's another aspect and you need to be convinced that the money is right, and that's important. "There's another aspect too, of visibility. Wrexham are not a traditionally big club but they're doing amazing things off the pitch, and the two owners are very commercially astute." ‌ He added: "It's a different kind of club, it's a new way of doing things, and they're doing them well." Cairney highlighted his desire to stay at Fulham after scoring a goal in the club's win over Brentford in May. ‌ Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, he said: "I've been through a lot here, through a lot with the fans. It was an incredible moment when I scored. It's a special bond. Addressing his future, Cairney added: "Nothing is sorted yet. Next week is my final game for Fulham. Hopefully it's not. In football, sometimes things go to the last minute and hopefully it's not my final time at Craven Cottage next weekend." Last month, renewed hopes emerged when Fulham announced that Cairney had been offered a new deal. It's unclear whether Wrexham can sway his decision, but co-owner Reynolds recently committed to backing his manager strongly in the transfer market this summer. Speaking on the RobRyanRed fan podcast, the 'Deadpool' actor said: "We're coming to win. I can't give you a dollar figure, but I can tell you that we are going to be as aggressive as we can possibly be while being mindful of sustainability. We have a stadium to revamp, but will still maintain its character and culture." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Brendan Rodgers outlines Celtic's plan for Callum Osmand

The young striker joined the Parkhead club earlier in the week upon the expiry of his contract at Premier League outfit Fulham. Osmand penned a four-year deal with the Scottish Premiership champions. Read more: Still just 19 years of age, Rodgers has outlined his plan for the youngster as Celtic's pre-season begins. "He had the chance to stay or go to other clubs," the manager told CelticTV. "He decided that Celtic was going to be the best next step for him in his career. So, he wants to be a part of a first-team setup where he can come and grow and develop. And obviously, here, this is what this environment is built for. "So, we see him as a really exciting young talent. We lost a young player to West Ham at the end of last season, Daniel Cummings. We bring in another talented player who's come in, with bags of pace, [who] scores goals, and, as you say, he was really coveted by a number of teams. So, we're delighted to get Callum up here, and we'll have a look in pre-season and see where he's at from there. "I think the plan is to take him in, have a look and see where he's at, and then decide what his development needs to look like. But just for us to get a young player of that quality, we're really pleased. And now the responsibility is his to grow and develop and see what he can make of his Celtic career."
