FedExCup Playoffs: Kurt Kitayama plays his way into the postseason with 3M Open win
Kitayama held on to win the 3M Open on Sunday afternoon outside of Minneapolis, just one day after he matched the course record with an 11-under 60. He nearly fired a 59 on Saturday, too, but he slipped and bogeyed the par-3 17th.
The win marked the second of his career, and his first since he won the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Perhaps most notably, though, was the jump in the FedExCup standings that Kitayama made after his win. The 32-year-old entered the week at No. 97 in the Official World Golf Rankings and No. 110 in the FedExCup race — which had him significantly out of the 70-man cutoff for the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The win, however, moved him up 57 spots to No. 53.
Barring something major happening next week in the final event of the PGA Tour season, Kitayama should now be safely into the postseason.
The top 70 golfers in the FedExCup standings will earn entry into the FedEx St. Jude Championship next month, which marks the first of the Tour's three playoffs events. This is the third year of the Tour's new postseason system, which cut the field size down from 125 to 70 for the first playoff event.
After the tournament in Memphis, the top 50 golfers will earn entry into the BMW Championship the following week. Those who make it into the BMW Championship will also earn automatic entry into the eight signature events on Tour next season.
From there, the top 30 will qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta. That tournament is set to kick off on Aug. 21, and will feature a traditional start this season, rather than the staggered starting strokes format it's used in the past.
The Wyndham Championship next week is the final opportunity for golfers to make a move into the playoffs. Here's a look at where things stand entering Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina:

Emiliano Grillo made the biggest move in this group. He started the week in Minnesota at No. 71, just two points shy of the cutoff for the playoffs. But a T20 finish jumped him up five spots safely to No. 66. Now, it's Matti Schmid and Ben An who are at the biggest risk of sliding out of the playoffs entering the final week of the season.

Brittney Griner leads way as Dream hand Lynx their first home loss of the season, spoil Napheesa Collier's 32-point night
The Minnesota Lynx are perfect at home no more. Brittney Griner led the Atlanta Dream to a 90-86 win over the Lynx on Sunday to hand Minnesota its first home loss of the season. The Lynx had previously won 14 straight at home to start the 2025 campaign. The Dream had to fend off a stat-stuffing 32-point effort from Napheesa Collier and a furious late comeback effort from the Lynx to secure the win. But they did both to improve to 15-10 and keep pressure in the East on the New York Liberty (17-7), whose first-place lead over the Dream now stands at 2.5 games. The Lynx still maintain the WNBA's best record with the loss that dropped them to 22-5 and 14-1 at home. Atlanta seized early control of the game and raced out to a 46-32 lead. Griner repeatedly outmatched her opponents in the paint as Atlanta built the lead en route to 22 points, four rebounds and three assists. She scored 17 of her 22 points before halftime and finished the night shooting 8 of 13 (61.5%) from the field. The second half was a different story. Collier, who scored 11 points in the first half, took the game over after the break. Minnesota cut its 14-point halftime deficit to 60-54 by the end of the third quarter, and Collier kept the pressure on en route to 32 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, four steals and two blocks. She one-upped Griner's offensive efficiency with a 14-of-18 (77.8%) effort from the floor, including a jumper that cut Atlanta's lead to 86-89 with 11.1 seconds remaining. But Jordin Canada hit a free throw that pushed Atlanta's lead back to two possessions at 90-86 with 7 seconds remaining, and the Dream ran out of time and chances to complete the comeback. With the win, the Dream cap a six-game road trip with a 3-3 record. They'll return to Atlanta to face the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday in their first home game since July 7. They'll finish the season with a back-loaded slate of home games that features 11 of their last 19 games in Atlanta, including seven of their last nine. The Lynx will have a chance to start a new home-winning streak on Wednesday in a showdown with the Liberty featuring the two best teams in the league. The Liberty might play that game without All-Star Breanna Stewart, who's dealing with a leg injury but will reportedly travel with the team.

Royals and former All-Star pitcher Seth Lugo finalizing contract extension
One of Major League Baseball's top trade candidates is officially off the table. The Kansas City Royals are finalizing a multi-year contract extension with former All-Star right-hander Seth Lugo, per Jeff Passan. Lugo, 35, was set to hit the open market in the offseason and was heavily involved in trade rumors. The big veteran has put together another quality season for the Royals, posting a 7-5 record with a 2.95 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 19 starts. Teams that have had interest in Lugo, like the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs, will have to shift their attention elsewhere. The 2024 All-Star was dominant last season, going 16-9 with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 206.2 innings. Bolton football's Joshua Henderson, 16, dies after complications from heat stroke
Joshua Henderson, a Bolton High School football player who'd been hospitalized since collapsing during a July 7 practice, died on July 26, Memphis Shelby County Schools announced in a statement on July 27. "It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of a beloved Bolton High School (BHS) student, Joshua Henderson," said MSCS. "He was not only an exceptional athlete and dedicated scholar, but also a source of light and joy to all who knew him. His kindness, determination, and positive spirit left a lasting impression on classmates, teachers, and our entire BHS community." On a GoFundMe page being used to raise money for funeral expenses, Henderson's family wrote that he suffered a severe heat stroke and had been receiving treatment at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. "After bravely fighting for his life in the hospital, Josh transitioned due to complications from organ failure caused by a severe heat stroke," the family wrote. "Josh was only 16 years old, full of life, laughter, and promise. He was deeply loved by his parents, siblings, extended family, and all who knew him. His sudden loss has left our hearts shattered and our world forever changed." MSCS said that grief counselors and support staff will be available at the school in the coming days for any students in need.
