St. John's donor Mike Repole and Rick Pitino horses strike out at Belmont Stakes

New York Post08-06-2025
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Mike Repole walked downstairs from his first-row clubhouse VIP box at Saratoga and conferred with jockey John Velazquez on the edge of the winner's circle after Saturday's eighth race at Saratoga.
The billionaire entrepreneur and St. John's basketball benefactor did not step inside. It was not his time.
His horse, Fierceness, the winner of the 2024 Travers Stakes, the signature summer event at this historic track, finished second by 2 ¹/₂ lengths to California invader Raging Torrent in the $1 million Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap.
While the 8-1 Raging Torrent earned an automatic bid to this fall's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher were left to pick up the pieces.
'If you told me he'd finish ahead of White Abarrio and Just a Touch, I'd [believe I'd] be taking my picture in the winner's circle,' Repole told The Post. 'You know, it happens. We knew [Raging Torrent] was going to go for the lead. He got brave. I thought at the 3/8ths pole we had him, the quarter pole we had him. And then I saw him open up and, you know, I don't know.
'It was a tough, tough race and a tough, tough loss,' Repole said, 'and there's absolutely no excuse.'
Raging Torrent's jockey, Frankie Dettori, praised his horse's will to win.
'At the quarter pole, I was in the lap of gods,' the 54-year-old Italian rider said. 'He showed great determination to get to the line.
3 Raging Torrent races past Fierceness to the finish line to win the Metropolitan Handicap on Belmon Stakes Day at Saratoga Race Course on June 7, 2025.

'He puts his head down, even when [Fierceness] pressured me [and he fought really hard.'
Fierceness, the sub-even-money favorite, got into trouble immediately breaking out of the Wilson chute, which sends horses directly into the middle of the first turn.
'Johnny [Velazquez] said he broke so sharply he kind of hit the gate and came back with some blood on his mouth from hitting the gate at the start,' Pletcher said. 'The first 16th of a mile was pretty rough. They were bouncing around trying to get position. After that he got into the exact position we wanted to, he just couldn't get by the horse in the lead.'
3 St. John's Red Storm head coach Rick Pitino speaks with the media before a game against the Cleveland Guardians at Yankee Stadium, Wednesday, June 4, 2025, in Bronx, NY.

Repole said Fierceness likely will be targeted for the $1 million Grade 1 Whitney Stakes on Aug. 2 at Saratoga.
In the 10th race, A.P. Kid, ridden by Velazquez and trained by Pletcher, ran past the leader at the top of the stretch and pulled away by five widening lengths.
Repole and his contingent of 80 family and friends later watched long shot Uncaged finish out of the money in the Belmont Stakes.

Repole wasn't the only owner with St. John's connections to enter a horse on Belmont Stakes Day.
Coach Rick Pitino's RAP Racing took a fourth place in the fifth race with Aggelos the Great.
Pitino was not in attendance but told The Post in a text: 'We're disappointed. We all thought he was ready to win. But, you know, [it's] horse racing.'
Pitino said he was told by jockey Manny Franco the horse did not like the muddy conditions.

Jalen Brunson reveals what roommate and fellow Knick Josh Hart's ‘Real Housewives' tagline would be

Jalen Brunson and fellow New York Knicks star Josh Hart are keeping it real – off the court. The New York Knicks superstars, Villanova alums and former roommates, have electrified the Big Apple, leading the Knickerbockers to the Eastern Conference Finals in June, the first time since 2000, and now they're game to talk reality TV. In their offseason podcast 'Roommates Show,' Brunson and Hart channel their inner 'Real Housewives' and get into a heated discussion on reality TV show 'Love Island.' 'Josh's 'Real Housewives' tagline would be, 'I'm just vibing,' that would be his tagline,' Brunson told The Post of the shooting guard whom he played college basketball with for two seasons during the 2016 NCAA national championship at Villanova. 8 In their offseason podcast 'Roommates Show,' Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart channel their inner 'Real Housewives' dishing on reality TV. Courtesy: Medium-Rare The kicker? Hart doesn't even watch reality TV, he told The Post — only making an exception for 'Love Island,' a hot topic of discussion in their latest podcast episode. In the last episode of their podcast, Hart, Brunson and their college roommate and co-host Matt Hillman unpacked their affinity for the reality competition (Spoiler alert: Hart is not a super fan). 'I'm kinda watching it and I'm also on my phone,' he said on the last podcast episode Thursday, confessing 'I'm not really a fan of anyone in particular. I rocked with Taylor [Chmelka]. Then America kicked him off because there was haters.' 'I don't watch reality shows,' Hart admitted to The Post (Brunson called him out as a 'weirdo' for it). 8 Brunson, who grew up in New Brunswick, New Jersey, told The Post 'The Jersey Shore,' is still the GOAT [greatest of all time] in his book. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Brunson, meanwhile, who grew up in New Brunswick, New Jersey, confessed: 'The Jersey Shore,' is still the GOAT [greatest of all time] in his book. 'My favorite reality show of all time, possibly one of my favorite shows,'' Burnson revealed 'I could watch that on repeat.' The point guard, listens to Justin Bieber as his pre-game routine, a tradition that started when he played ball back at Villanova, which he's said leads him to win. He also said he can't stop listening to a particular song off of Bieber's new album, 'Swag.' 8 Brunson, who listens to Justin Bieber as his pre-game routine, told The Post he's been loving Justin Bieber's new album: 'The first song right now is probably my favorite. Tickets go on sale Friday for a live taping of the 'Roommates Show,' in Central Park on September, 6 at Rumsey Playfield. The show will feature two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, comedy legend Ben Stiller, and a musical performance by Ferg at the block party that mixes hoops and music. Thousands of Knicks fans are expected to gather, harkening back the energy that powered the city back in March during playoffs. 'Everything about the season was fantastic, obviously ending short was the only downfall of it. The love we got, everything that had to do with the season, the fans, was so appreciated. My favorite part of the whole thing was the fan interaction, but in Boston the streets were flooded. It was a really cool sight to see. When we're playing well the energy is electric,' Brunson said. 8 Brunson and Hart electrified the Big Apple, leading the Knickerbockers to the Eastern Conference Finals in June, the first time since 2000, and now they're game to talk reality TV. Getty Images Dream podcast guests? They have big players in mind. 'Someone like Denzel [Washington] would be the dream guest,' Hart told The Post. 'The Roommates' podcast, they said, is a chance for them to call the shots on topics they want to be unfiltered about. 'There's so many narratives that take place in the media, this is one way we can control our narrative about the topics we want to talk about,' Brunson told The Post. 8 Brunson said of the Knicks fandom: 'Everything about the season was fantastic, obviously ending short was the only downfall of it. Still, Hart says not everything is an open book. 'There's definitely stuff that is off limits – normally we say things that come to mind and have fun with it. Somehow 75% of the things I say get edited out unfortunately. They try to mute me a little bit,' Hart joked. 8 Hart (left) joked to The Post of the 'Roommates Show' podcast Somehow 75% of the things I say get edited out unfortunately. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Brunson and Hart helped pick the number one over FaceTime, and a day later New York beat the Pacers, ending Indiana's series lead to 2-1 games. 'It's an amazing feeling. It's really cool to be involved in that,' Brunson said. 'It was cool, at the same time it was weird. It's a blessing to have that kind of love around the city.'

Diamondbacks' season falling apart could give jolt to MLB trade deadline

Mike Hazen is about to become even more popular. The Diamondbacks may have no choice but to turn to sell mode following a three-game sweep by the Astros on Wednesday that dropped them to 50-53 and 1-4-2 in their last seven series. Arizona has pending free agents who figure to be popular trade candidates in third baseman Eugenio Suarez, starters Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, and first baseman Josh Naylor. This trade deadline season is waiting for a big trade to potentially galvanize action, and there have been plenty of eyes on the desert to see what Arizona will do. While the Diamondbacks entered the year with lofty ambitions after signing ace Corbin Burnes, they've faced a staggering amount of injuries while competing in the competitive NL West. That includes losing Burnes to Tommy John surgery, which also affects the team's 2026 outlook. 4 Eugenio Suarez figures to be a popular trade piece. Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Arizona started the second half with a sweep of the Cardinals, but this recent sweep leaves it 'nearly resigned to selling now,' as The Post's Jon Heyman tweeted Wednesday night. Hazen, the team's general manager, surely realizes he has four potential chips he can cash in while faced with the possibility of losing the quartet in free agency. 4 Merrill Kelly is having a strong season. AP Suarez, 34, has been one of the hottest names mentioned on the trade block since he ranks fourth in the majors and second in the NL with 36 homers. The veteran third baseman has often been linked to the Yankees, while the Mariners, Cubs and Tigers could be other potential suitors, per The Post's Greg Joyce. Hazen would love a bidding war between contending teams to maximize Suarez's value. Arizona also could likely land solid hauls for Kelly and Gallen despite the pair having very different seasons. 4 Zac Gallen hasn't produced as expected. Getty Images Kelly, 36, has posted a 3.32 ERA across 122 innings and owns a 1.06 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched). Contenders would love to slot the righty into their potential postseason rotations, especially at a time when so many teams could use additional pitching depth. Gallen, meanwhile, is enduring the worst season of his career. The 29-year-old righty is 7-11 with a 5.58 ERA but had previously posted an ERA north of 4.00 just once in his career. Teams surely view him as a bounce-back candidate if removed from Chase Field, which again has been one of the most hitter-friendly parks in the majors, per Baseball Savant. Naylor, a 28-year-old lefty, has posted an .810 OPS to go along with 11 homers and 58 RBIs. 4 Josh Naylor could be on the move. AP He could handle first base duties or potentially serve as a platoon bat, with the Red Sox standing out as a team that could use a lefty hitter at the position. The 2025 MLB trade deadline is July 31 at 6 p.m. ET.

Parent of rival NJ team backs little leaguer suspended for bat flipping: ‘These umpires aren't very good'

Even the enemy is going to bat for this little leaguer! A parent at a rival New Jersey team is backing the Little League player who was suspended from a state finals game for joyfully flipping his bat — saying the 'horseplay' rule is unclear and most players don't even know it exists. 'These umpires aren't very good. It doesn't warrant a game suspicion,' said Chris Heenan, whose son plays for a team in the Harrison Township Little League organization, whose 12-year-old squad gave up the home run that led to Haddonfield Little League player Marco Rocco's now-infamous bat-flipping celebration. 4 The bat flip got Rocco ejected along with a one-game suspension. X / @Spicoli_____ 4 Rocco's father, Joe, filed court papers to have the suspension overturned. X / @Spicoli_____ Rocco, 12, was facing off against Harrison Thursday when he tossed his bat in the air to celebrate hitting a home run, which made the game an 8-0 blowout and prompted the umpire to eject him from the game. The move also earned him a one-game suspension and barred him from competing in the New Jersey Little League State Tournament final this coming Thursday — outraging his dad, Joe Rocco, who filed court papers Tuesday to have the suspension overturned. But even Heenan — whose son plays for a rival Harrison team in the 11-year-old division — called the punishment off base. 'I don't believe it is common knowledge in Little League that you aren't supposed to flip a bat,' he said. 4 Joe and Marco Rocco are pictured in an undated Facebook photo. Facebook/Liz Rocco He also said the 'no horseplay' rule reportedly cited by the umpire of the game in question is overly vague. 'You can call almost anything 'horseplay,'' he said. 'If there's no rule specifically against bat flipping in the handbook, how would you know?' The elder Rocco insists the league sends kids mixed messages by posting videos of celebratory bat flipping on its social media accounts — and Heenan agreed. 4 If the suspension stands, Rocco would be barred from playing in the Little League state finals. Facebook/Liz Rocco While Heenan acknowledged that tossing a bat in the air could be dangerous, he said the league should stay consistent with its messaging. 'If that's what they're promoting on social media, and that's what kids are seeing, that's what they're gonna do,' he said. 'It sucks,' he added. 'You live and you learn.' On Tuesday, Rocco filed an emergency temporary restraining order in the Gloucester County Chancery Division court in an attempt to have his son's suspension overturned. He'll learn in a hearing Wednesday afternoon whether his kid can play in the big game, Rocco told The Post. Little League International didn't immediately return a request for comment from The Post Wednesday.
