Luke Littler is darts Triple Crown king as the Nuke savours seeing his name being added to idol's trophy

Littler completes the major set of three at the age of 18 by beating James Wade and taking his youngest winner tag in the process
Record-setting Luke Littler admits it means the world to put his name on idol Phil Taylor's trophy and seal a Triple Crown

With the World Championship title and a Premier League crown already in the bag, the spellbinding teenager added the final piece of the darts jigsaw in Blackpool with the Betfred World Matchplay.

Littler recovered from losing the first five legs of the Final to rampage back and deny James Wade at the Winter Gardens to become the youngest-ever winner of the prestigious title.

Ironically, it was the Londoner who had held that tag for 18 years after scooping the trophy at the age of 24 back in 2007. But his attempts to bridge the near two-decade gap and triumph again were thwarted by the Warrington wonderkid.
Littler stormed back to secure an 18-13 success and have his name engraved on the silverware named in honour of his hero The Power.

The 18-year-old is the fifth youngest to have achieved the remarkable Triple Crown feat alongside Taylor, Michael van Gerwen, Gary Anderson and Luke Humphries and he said: 'It means absolutely everything. My idol Phil, he's come here 16 times, he's won it. but now my name is on the list, it'll be on this trophy. And I can say I have completed the Triple Crown.
'Since I started on the tour, since I got my tour card, I've always said to myself: As long as I win one of every major, I'll be happy. I've only got a few left to tick off. But I'll definitely chase the majors that I haven't won yet.'
Littler once again showed mettle to match his class as he had to recover from another nightmare start.

Having trailed 5-0 at the first break of his semi-final against Josh Rock, Littler, astonishingly, ended up in the same boat 24 hours later.
Wade's power scoring and lethal finishing saw him sweep the session, yet The Nuke's response was even feistier than Saturday night as he rattled them all straight back to level at 5-5 without giving his opponent a single dart at a double.
Littler, who also fought back in the earlier rounds to beat Jermaine Wattiemena, went in front for the first time in the 13th leg and, from that point, he was able to keep edging away to set up the final thrust and surge through the line.

He said: 'Obviously, 5-0 down once again. I said to myself, you've been here before, what are you doing? But I managed to pull it out the bag, managed to win the next five and it was five apiece. I think James started to drop off a bit and I started to find my best darts.
'There's obviously been a few times in the past where I've got myself back into a game. But in the past week, it's really shown me as a player. It's shown that I can come back from 5-0 down, I can go back from 7-3 down and I'm just glad to win.

'I came here last year, lost the first round. Some people might have thought I'd lose again, but it's been really good. I'm just so happy that I've pulled myself out of these scorelines and I don't want to be 5-0 down again.
'I've definitely put them [family and girlfriend] through it by trailing in games, but I'm very happy to spend a long 10 days in Blackpool and I've come out victorious.
'Once again, pulling myself out of these scorelines that I'm trailing by and getting myself back into the game, finding the 180s. It's been a good 10 days.'
Littler broke the previous record of 56 for tournament 180s at a Matchplay by taking his tally to 64 through the Final and smiled: 'Ooh, just by eight!'
The kid now has time to savour success before his next outing in the World Series Down Under and said: 'I want to go home, back to a bit of normality. Rest next week, chill out and then fly over to Australia and see everyone over there.'

Sunderland agree Granit Xhaka deal while Newcastle target Aaron Ramsdale

Sunderland are hoping to add to their summer recruitment drive by signing Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen for about £17million. Despite the new Leverkusen coach, Erik ten Hag, having ruled out the departure of Xhaka recently after the sales of Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz to Liverpool and Jonathan Tah to Bayern Munich, a deal has been struck between the clubs. Xhaka, 32, will cost an initial £13million, plus £4million in add-ons, and will sign a three-year deal for the Premier League new boys. The former Arsenal midfielder has been given permission to undergo a medical at Sunderland, who have already spent in excess of £100million on six players. Meanwhile, Atalanta will move for Liverpool's Federico Chiesa if a deal to sell Ademola Lookman to Inter Milan is concluded. Lookman wants to play for Inter, and Atalanta will then target Chiesa, who is keen for more regular playing time. Everton are set to finalise their fourth summer signing, with Bayern Munich's teenage left back Adam Aznou arriving in a deal worth about £8million. The 19-year-old will be back-up to Vitalii Mykolenko. Newcastle United are in talks with Southampton to sign Aaron Ramsdale after missing out on Burnley's James Trafford (Gary Jacob writes). Ramsdale, 27, was given his debut at Bournemouth by Eddie Howe, now the Newcastle head coach, during his time in charge of the south-coast side. The goalkeeper will be allowed to leave Southampton, potentially on loan, although he also has a release clause of about £20million in his contract that became active after the club's relegation from the Premier League in May. Newcastle want a loan deal, with an option to buy, while Southampton want a £5million loan fee and for any eventual sale to be worth about £25million. Ramsdale wants to return to a top-flight club to help him earn a place in England's World Cup squad next year. West Ham United considered a move and Galatasaray were interested in him. Last summer he initially rejected Southampton but then decided to join them for a fee of £18million, potentially rising to £25million, from Arsenal. Ramsdale, who earns about £100,000 a week, has three years left on his deal at St Mary's. However, his first season with the club ended with him being relegated from the Premier League for the third time in his career, having suffered the same fate with Sheffield United and Bournemouth. The most recent of his five England caps came against Iceland in June last year. He was among four goalkeepers named by Thomas Tuchel in his first squad in March, but was omitted for the games against Andorra and Senegal in June, with Jordan Pickford, Trafford and Dean Henderson selected ahead of him. Newcastle had identified Trafford as a long-term successor for Nick Pope, but the 22-year-old will return to his former club Manchester City in a £27million deal. Newcastle were also interested in the Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier. It has been a difficult transfer window for the North East side. Liverpool are interested in their striker Alexander Isak and they missed out on Dean Huijsen, João Pedro and Hugo Ekitike. Elsewhere Nottingham Forest are close to agreeing a deal for Dan Ndoye with Bologna, worth a total of about £33million. The Switzerland winger scored eight and made four goals in the league last season and will replace Anthony Elanga, who was sold to Newcastle for an initial £52million this month. Napoli made a lower offer for Ndoye, 24, worth £27.7million.

Ex-Arsenal star set for Premier League return after Ramsdale and Xhaka

Yet another former Arsenal player could make a surprise transfer back to the Premier League following Granit Xhaka and Aaron Ramsdale. Mikel Arteta has been busy this summer spending just shy of £200million on six new players, including Martin Zubimendi, Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke. There could yet be more incomings at the Emirates but this transfer window has also seen several notable ex-Gunners make high-profile moves. Former club captain Xhaka is set to join newly-promoted Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £17m. The Swiss midfielder only left north London two years ago and achieved great success in Germany, leading Leverkusen to an invincible league and cup double. Meanwhile, Ramsdale has reportedly said yes to joining Newcastle, with the Magpies now working on the terms of a transfer with Southampton. The England goalkeeper, who only left the Emirates last summer, is available for £20m thanks to a relegation release clause, but could move to St. James' Park on a loan deal. Now, a third player Arteta recently got rid of could be heading back to England, as Sky Sports report that Everton are interested in signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles. The former Three Lions star spent two decades at Arsenal and started the 2020 FA Cup final victory, the last time the club won a major trophy. Capable of playing at full-back and defensive midfield, he struggled to keep his place in the first-team under Arteta and after multiple loan spells, he was released in 2023 and subsequently joined Lyon. It is said Maitland-Niles, who has two years left on his contract with the French club, is open to returning to the Premier League. More Trending Everton boss David Moyes is an admirer of the 27-year-old and is desperate for new signings, recently telling The Athletic: 'I would hope by the time we get to the end of the window, we'd be closer to 10 [new players]. So you can imagine the amount of work we've got to do. 'The club are trying really hard to get the players I want and I've found it really difficult because in my last few years [in his previous job at West Ham], I've been involved in European competition. 'It's a bit easier when you're a club in Europe. You get a better chance of attracting a lot of players. 'We've been in for a lot of really good players. Unfortunately, a lot them have said no at the moment.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
