50 years ago: Boys catch a rare fish at Gourock's McInroy's Point (1975)
The result of that activity can be seen here, with a proud John.
The boys had been fishing at McInroy's Point a short time when they reeled in a line and found at the end of it a strange fish they could not identify.
Youngster Graeme Warwick with the fish in 1975 (Image: Archive) They decided to ask the owner of a local fishing tackle shop to name it for them, but he too was baffled.
He consulted a reference book and eventually the fish was identified on a wall chart as a comber or sea perch.

"I asked him if the fish was unusual in Scotland," said John, "and he said it is rare anywhere in Britain."
The fish eventually had to be disposed of but John, of 13 Newton Street, wisely made sure that he first got some pictures of their rare catch.

Orphaned bear cubs rescued from Calaveras County neighborhood
A litter of bear cubs seen wandering a Calaveras County neighborhood alone have been taken in by wildlife rescuers in Southern California. The San Diego Humane Society says the three cubs were spotted over the course of several days. With no mother in sight, the cubs were rescued by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and then taken to the San Diego Humane Society's Ramona Wildlife Center. Officials say the cubs, two males and a female, were about six to seven months old. Rescuers euthanized one of the cubs after finding it had bone defects and a BB pellet embedded in one of her paws. The other two cubs are now settling into their rescue habitat with the goal of minimally invasive care to avoid the animals from bonding with humans.

A community has been left devastated after a historic Cumbernauld church was destroyed by fire. Flames engulfed the B-listed St Mungo's Trinity Parish Church on Saturday night, prompting an emergency response. The congregational roll is around 350 members. Rev Alastair Duncan, interim moderator of Cumbernauld Trinity Church, said: 'The congregation is devastated by the sudden loss of its building by fire on Saturday evening. 'St Mungo's, with its iconic pyramid-shaped roof, stands at the heart of Cumbernauld town centre, and is and has been an important landmark since it was built in the 1960s, designed by notable Scottish architect Alan Reiach. 'But aside from its distinctive architecture, the B-listed building is held in great affection by the people of Cumbernauld and its location remains a significant presence for the Church of Scotland, at the heart of a town centre which is scheduled for extensive redevelopment over the next 10-15 years. 'The building is cherished by many who have had associations with St Mungo's through rites of baptism and marriage and funeral services, as well as by generations of faithful worshippers, youth and children's organisations and other community groups.' Residents and worshippers alike took to social media to send well-wishes and prayers. Jamie Hepburn, MSP, said: "It is incredibly distressing to see another fire at an important building in the area so shortly after a similar at the [[Cumbernauld]] Theatre Cottage Building. "My thoughts are with the congregation at Cumbernauld Trinity Parish Church as they come to terms with this terrible incident at the St Mungo's Church building. "A local landmark of importance, this place of worship is linked to countless numbers of local families as a location for christenings, weddings and funerals. "And it has also served as an important hub for the wider community, hosting birthday parties for local children, community organisations and back in the day graduation ceremonies for students at our local college. The whole area is impacted by this terrible incident." Cumbernauld town centre evacuated as church fire continues
CUMBERNAULD town centre has been evacuated due to smoke from a nearby church fire. The B-listed St Mungo's Trinity Parish Church has been destroyed after a fire which broke out on Saturday night. Fire crews have been in attendance since, with local residents evacuated as a precaution. Now The Centre, a large brutalist structure containing more than 100 retail units, has been evacuated too. It is understood that the decision was made for health and safety reasons, as the surrounding areas are very smoky from the ongoing blaze at St Mungo's. It is not clear when people will be able to access The Centre building again. "It smells really smoky everywhere," one person evacuated told The National. The latest fire comes after another blaze ripped through the historic Cumbernauld Cottage Theatre just last week.
