Folk singer's gruesome death while hiking after being attacked and eaten by coyotes

Daily Mirror5 days ago
This young and budding singer is one of the only people in the world to have been tragically killed as a result of a coyote attack, and her story is devastating
At the age of 19, Taylor Mitchell became the first ever adult to lose their life to a fatal coyote attack whilst on a popular hiking trail in Canada, and experts have been trying to work out how the tragedy happened ever since.

With hopes of becoming a professional folk singer, Taylor released her debut album, For Your Consideration, which would be the last music she would ever create. After a jam-packed summer of performing, she decided to embark on a small tour of Eastern Canada, armed with her brand new car and driver's license.

But, when she took to the road, the teenager and her loved ones had no idea she would never be coming home. Ready for an adventure, the singer arrived at the Skyline Trail, Cape Breton Highlands National Park's most popular walk which sees up to 25,000 visitors year in and year out.

Taylor was one of the extremely unlucky ones because despite being dressed appropriately with her backpack and carrying no food, she was struck down in broad daylight by a pack of wild coyotes. She was found on the Nova Scotia trail, believed to be a short time after the attack, but it was, tragically, already too late.
Four fellow hikers, came across Mitchell during the attack and did all they could to scare the coyotes away while she lay critically wounded. Mysteriously, Taylor was seen both before and after the attack, but there were no witnesses to see the mauling itself.

After hearing screams in the distance, several hikers were faced with Taylor's brutal reality. Just moment after hearing her desperate cries they walked along the access road and started to find her personal items. Keys and a small knife were found on the floor before they came across pieces of torn-up and bloody clothing, along with large amounts of blood on the ground, all belonging to the 19-year-old girl.
Soon after, at 3:25pm, the strangers discovered Taylor's body lying nearby, with a coyote standing over her. She was still conscious and able to speak with the group that rescued her while they waited for medical attention.

Paramedics were able to take her to the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre in Chéticamp, where she remained in critical condition and was soon airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre. Devastatingly, despite the relentless efforts carried out by medical teams, Taylor passed away due to blood loss later on that evening, on October 27, 2009.
Her tragic death left experts confused as to what led the coyotes to attack her, having seen no reports or problems with the animals in the park prior to the event. They decided to run some tests to understand the influence of such a horror and found that the coyotes were in fact eastern coyotes that carry a wolf gene, but to what extent this affected the death of Taylor Mitchell is unknown.
An obituary was made to remember and honour the life of Taylor, set up by her loving sister Emily Mitchell. The website states: "Wise beyond her years and an environmentalist at a very early age, Taylor understood the unbreakable connection between animal and human life and was involved with various causes for habitat conservation.
"Taylor, whose musical star was on the rise, had a break during her first Maritimes tour and was doing what she loved—spending time in nature's fold—when the attack occurred."
Since that day in 2009, no other human adult has faced a fatal attack by coyotes.

The TV star was seen with her famous son Matty Healy in West Hollywood this week. ‌ The 67-year-old has recently faced criticism from Taylor's fans after making a dig at how she tends to write songs about her exes. She also hinted that Taylor's fans often lash out at anyone that makes a negative comment about her. ‌ Now, Denise has been spotted looking emotional while chatting to her son Matty outside a restaurant in West Hollywood on Thursday. It comes after Sharon Osbourne breaks down in tears at Ozzy's funeral in heartbreaking scenes. ‌ In images shared by TMZ, Denise was seen blowing her nose and dabbing at her eyes with a tissue as she spoke to Matty, before hugging the 1975 singer. A source told the issue that Matty was consoling his mother about a family issue. ‌ Matty sat beside his mum after they went out to dinner together along with Matty's fiancée Gabbriette Bechtel. The mother-son duo looked to be having a deep conversation while Matty smoked a cigarette. The pair then stood up and had a long hug before going back inside. It is unknown exactly why Denise was upset, but a source reportedly told TMZ: "There was a family matter that Matty was consoling his mother about." ‌ Denise appeared on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live last month where she was asked about Taylor's latest album The Tortured Poets Department. Denise told host Andy Cohen: "Obviously, on pain of death can I talk about that episode, but being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad I lost." Audience members were surprised by the statement, but Denise then went on to clarify what she meant. She said: "Not that I have anything against [Taylor] at all! It was just – it was tricky. Listen, you're not allowed to say anything." ‌ Taylor and Matty, 36, first sparked a romantic relationship after she split from her long-term boyfriend, actor Joe Alwyn, back in April 2023. However, the relationship wasn't to last and now Taylor is with NFL star Travis Kelce, while Matty himself is now engaged to model Gabbriette Bechtel. Despite not dating until 2023, Taylor and Matty actually first met years before. The two reportedly met when Taylor attended a 1975 show in Los Angeles in 2014. Then in 2022 rumors began circulating that Matty would be featured on Taylor's album Midnights. There was some truth to this as Matty said he has collaborated with Taylor on some music in the studio but it was never published in the end. However, their friendship stayed strong as Taylor went on to make a surprise appearance on stage at a 1975 concert. It's unknown whether the duo remain on friendly terms after their split.

Woman went out for a drink with her dad and was never seen alive again

On January 4, 1996, 20-year-old Deborah Wood went out for a drink with her father and friends in Leeds. After leaving the pub, she was never seen alive again On January 4, 1996, Deborah Wood spent the evening at a pub in Leeds with her father and friends. That same night, she disappeared and was never seen alive again. ‌ Deborah, a 20-year-old from Holbeck, had been enjoying the company of her loved ones at Big Lil's Pub in Leeds city centre on that fateful evening. After Deborah said her goodbyes and left the pub, there was no sign of her for the next ten days. ‌ Then, on January 14, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service was summoned to a fire at Burnley Railway Station. It was here that they discovered Deborah's body ablaze. ‌ She had been severely burned, and it took dental records and DNA testing to conclusively identify her. A post-mortem examination revealed she had been murdered shortly after her disappearance, before presumably the murderer wrapped her in a rubbish bag, stored her in a cold place, and then discarded her. This follows reports that a woman murdered by her ex made 13 calls to police, but nobody came to rescue her. Heartbroken brother begs notorious killer to confess to murdering sister 28 years ago 'Did you kill my sister?' Victim's brother wants to quiz jailed child killer ‌ The exact circumstances of Deborah's fate remain unknown to this day. However, her brother, Craig, suspects that convicted serial killer and rapist John Taylor may have been involved, reports Yorkshire Live. During his appearance on Channel 4's In The Footsteps of Killers, Craig suggested that a necklace found in the boot of Taylor's car, following his arrest for the murder of Leanne Tiernan, could have belonged to Deborah. Taylor has been connected to Big Lil's, where he was reportedly a frequent patron, as per former employees. Speaking to The Sun, Craig revealed: "I've been thinking about writing to him asking for answers. He's only in Wakefield prison - it's not more than seven miles away. I'd say to him, 'you've got nothing to lose - just tell me'. He's not getting out, so what's he got to lose? He's got nothing to gain from not telling the truth." ‌ He continued, "If you look at all the circumstantial evidence, there is a lot to link Taylor to my sister's murder. But the biggest thing is that bar staff at Big Lil's have confirmed have Taylor used to drink there. "He used to go around the tables being a pest to women and causing a nuisance. So we know he was a regular in the same pub where Deborah was last seen. To me, that's just too much of a coincidence." Despite 29 years having passed since her vanishing, the full story remains elusive. ‌ On the quarter-century anniversary of Deborah's disappearance, West Yorkshire Police issued a renewed call for information. Detective Inspector Paul Conroy from the force's Operation Recall team stated: "This crime may now be 25 years old, but time doesn't diminish our resolve to bring the person or persons responsible for this horrendous crime to justice. "And likewise, her grieving family wants answers about what happened to Deborah. I would appeal to anyone who knows anything about this case to examine their conscience and come forward – your information could make all the difference. ‌ "Deborah was given no dignity in death, with her body being burned to the extent that she was only identified using dental records and DNA. "Previous attempts to bring her killer to justice, including an appeal and reconstruction on BBC Crimewatch, have so far failed. Hopefully, with the passage of time, people may feel more comfortable or able to come forward and tell us what happened. "As with all unsolved murder enquiries, the case remains under investigation and a thorough forensic review remains ongoing."
