
ESA's Biomass launch: A European leap into Earth observation
Tropical forests play an important role in mitigating climate change, as they absorb a great share of the carbon dioxide (CO2) stored in terrestrial biomass.
However, quantifying exactly how much CO2 these forests absorb is challenging, as their dense canopies make them almost impenetrable.
But the answer to these doubts might come from French Guiana itself.
Blasting off from Europe's spaceport in Kourou on April 29, the European Space Agency (ESA) launched Biomass into orbit, a satellite designed to measure the amount of carbon tropical forests store.
Euronews Tech Talks was on site for the liftoff. In the first of two special episodes dedicated to the satellite, the podcast looks back at the eve of the launch to explore the satellite, the people working on it, and how they felt ahead of the crucial launch day.
Biomass is the seventh mission of ESA's Future EO programme, a series of projects based on proposals from scientists to test new technologies and analyse specific aspects of our planet.
In the case of Biomass, its standout feature is its P-band radar, a technology never used before in space.
The P-band instrument, which resembles an umbrella, sends low-frequency signals that penetrate the canopy and bounce back to the satellite, providing data on the quantity of carbon stored and its location within the trees.
This instrument will not replace on-the-ground research on tropical forests, but it will provide essential data to understand their role in carbon flows.
In fact, grasping how much carbon is stored in terrestrial biomass can help researchers determine the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.
"It's not just scientifically relevant, but it also has real value for all of us citizens," Simonetta Cheli, ESA director of Earth observation programmes, told Euronews.
"It contributes to a healthier planet, to improving our health and the quality of the air we breathe," she continued.
To organise and conduct the mission, ESA relied on the support of multiple European actors.
The satellite was manufactured by Airbus Defence and Space, and launched into orbit by the Vega C.
The rocket's components were produced across 13 ESA member states, with the Italian company Avio serving as the lead contractor and design authority of the project.
"It took us years to get here, but now we're able to offer a range of launch capabilities that can meet practically any need in Europe," Giulio Ranzo, CEO of Avio, told Euronews.
The other two important players in the project are Arianespace and CNES, the French space agency.
The former oversaw the launch and is responsible for the commercial exploitation of the launcher.
The latter contributed to the research behind the satellite's development, managed the launch campaign, and is involved in collecting data from the satellite in orbit.
All these actors worked together for over a decade to prepare the satellite and its launch into space, a challenging move due to the ambitious novelty of the P-band radar.
On April 28, the day before the launch, Kourou spaceport welcomed representatives, professionals and journalists looking forward to witnessing Biomass's lift-off.
In the Jupiter Centre, one of the main buildings in the space facility housing the Mission Control Room, the air was filled with a shared sense of anticipation.
Some people were rational, including Jean-Frédéric Alasa, launch range operations director at CNES.
"We're always excited to launch because it's the end of a long phase of preparation," he told Euronews. "But we also consider the situation in which we have a failure, because a launch is complicated".
Others were driven by a determined optimism.
"We are very confident, it will work, and it will be useful for all of us," Michael Fehringer, Biomass project manager, told Euronews.

Commission nearly doubles research, innovation fund in next budget
The European Commission has earmarked some €175.3 billion of its long-term 2028-2034 budget for Horizon Europe, its research and innovation program, up from €93.5 billion in the previous period (2021-2027). Horizon Europe, which finances projects on green and digital transitions as well as research leading to scientific breakthroughs, will now be part of the newly created European Competitiveness Fund (ECF), with a total budget of €410 billion, that aims to improve the bloc's competitiveness in technologies and strategic sectors critical to the EU. Until now, the variety of EU programmes supporting innovation and deployment of research has been seen as 'complex and difficult to navigate' for the targeted beneficiaries, the Commission's document said. The new ECF is pooling resources from eleven programmes. Of the €410 billion fund, some €54.8 billion is earmarked for the 'digital transition'. 'This investment impulse should benefit the entire Single Market – from AI to space, from clean tech to biotech. The Fund will be structured into four vertically integrated sectoral windows: clean transition and decarbonisation; resilience, defence industry and space; digital leadership; health and bio-economy,' the Commission's document said. On Wednesday the Commission presented its much-anticipated proposal for the new long-term EU budget, worth €2 trillion between 2028 and 2034, a sizable increase compared to the €1.21 trillion in the previous period. In a reaction to the funding, tech lobby group Digital Europe said an 'additional investment of between €157 billion and €227 billion per year on average' is needed to close Europe's investment gap with other regions of the world. 'Digital technologies are crucial to cut emissions, protect critical infrastructure and super-charge productivity – they need to drive action across all the EU's strategic priorities,' its statement said. In February, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU executive would invest some €20 billion in AI gigafactories, needed to allow for 'collaborative development' for the most complex AI models. In comparison, French President Emmanuel Macron previously committed to invest €109 billion in AI projects in France in the coming years. On Monday, the US government committed to €92 billion for cutting-edge AI and energy initiatives. The budget will now need to be discussed by the member states and needs the consent of the European Parliament.

Scientists debunk myths about ‘charismatic' raccoons in Germany
Once seen as endearing additions to European wildlife, North American raccoons have become a serious threat to Germany's ecosystem. Now, scientists are pushing back against popular myths that paint the invasive predator in a sympathetic light. A new paper from Frankfurt-based scientists, published in Ecological Indicators, calls for urgent action. The authors argue that raccoons are wreaking havoc on native flora and fauna, and that misinformation is fuelling the problem. Up to two million raccoons are now estimated to be in Germany, a population surge that has occurred despite animal control efforts. In urban areas like Kassel, which has one of the highest raccoon densities in Europe, there are more than 100 of the mostly nocturnal creatures per 100 hectares. That's roughly one per football pitch. Researchers say this explosion has triggered alarming losses among local species. Raccoons, they warn, are not opportunistic scavengers, as they are often portrayed, but rather effective predators. They raid nests, destroy clutches of eggs and young animals and exhibit what the scientists call a 'hunting frenzy' in sensitive habitats. Emotional myths hinder urgent action Led by researchers from Goethe University, the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Center, the study set out to identify the different stages of the raccoon infestation in Germany in order to apply the finding to other invasive species in Europe. 'We are documenting a dramatic decline in sensitive species in areas with high raccoon densities,' says Dr Norbert Peter, who leads ZOWIAC (Zoonotic and Wildlife Ecological Impacts of Invasive Carnivores), the joint project that spearheaded this research. The raccoon's rapid spread, they found, has been accompanied by persistent misinformation, ranging from false claims that hunting makes them reproduce faster to unsupported ideas about their social structure. According to the authors, many of these narratives are rooted in outdated or misapplied studies. Many of them began in North America and followed the raccoons overseas. 'These myths have real-world consequences,' warns Dr Dorian Dörge, the project's scientific coordinator. 'They prevent necessary protective measures and thereby endanger already threatened native species.' Perceptions also play a powerful role. Research shows that raccoons' photogenic faces and playful behaviour contribute to a strong emotional bias among the public, one that can stifle science-based conservation efforts. And other approaches, such as sterilisation, are considered unfeasible, if not illegal under EU rules on managing invasive alien species. To reverse the damage, the researchers are calling for coordinated control plans, including increased hunting in sensitive areas, federal funding and improved public education. 'We must implement the legal requirements for species protection consistently,' says Professor Sven Klimpel, lead author of the study, 'and not let them be overridden by sympathy for charismatic animals.' Invasive species threaten biodiversity across Europe Germany's raccoons are not the continent's only invaders. The EU is facing a growing number of invasive alien species, fromalgae and poisonous fish that now populate the Mediterranean to so-called murder hornets. More than 12,000 alien species are present in Europe today, according to the European Commission. As many as 15 per cent are considered invasive. Nearly 90 of them are designated as 'of Union concern,' meaning member states are legally required to prevent their introduction, monitor their spread and control or eradicate them. In Europe, recent outbreaks include the Asian hornet, which has spread rapidly from France to as far away as Slovakia. Meanwhile, 900 invasive species pose threats to biodiversity in Mediterranean waters. Efforts to convert consumers intoculinary enthusiasts of species such as pufferfish have had halting success. These unwelcome creatures cost the EU an estimated €12 billion per year, according to the Commission. Globally, invasive species cost economies almost€400 billion. Much like the raccoons, some might not seem invasive, either. For example, theAfrican sacred ibis – a bird revered in ancient Egypt – is now setting off alarms among European officials. The bird has spread rapidly in northern Italy, preying on amphibians as well as the eggs and chicks of other species, such as tern and heron. As both cases show, combating invasive species requires a multi-pronged approach. One that can be as much about confronting misconceptions as managing ecosystems.

Macron urges France-UK partnership on AI to keep up with US and China
President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday it was "critical" that France and the UK work together on artificial intelligence (AI) in order to catch up with the United States and China. The "UK and France are probably the two nations to be part of the race and leading the race in Europe" on AI, Macron told a London university event during his state visit. Speaking in English at Imperial College London, Macron said the neighboring nations "are lagging behind both the US and China. (...) And the big question for all of us is how to be part of the competition and indeed to de-risk our model and not to be dependent on US and or Chinese solutions." The French president added: "The partnership between (the) UK and France is for me critical, because we (...) face the same challenges." Different views on regulating AI However, differences have emerged between the UK and France on regulating AI. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has invited companies to test their AI innovations in the UK outside of regulatory restrictions, a clear distinction with the European Union following Brexit. By contrast, dozens of Europe's biggest companies last week urged the EU to pause its landmark AI rules, warning that going too fast could harm the bloc's ability to lead in the global artificial intelligence race. Several scientific and technological agreements have been announced on the sidelines of Macron's visit to the UK, including a joint engineering laboratory between Imperial College London and the French National Centre for Scientific Research. "From Concorde to the Channel Tunnel, UK-French collaboration has produced iconic engineering feats that defied limits and shaped history," Hugh Brady, president of Imperial College London, said in a statement Wednesday. The statement added that "the lab will bring together some of the world's most eminent engineers to develop proposals for major projects that could rapidly advance UK and French strategic priorities, including AI."
