Rashmika Mandanna Defends Ranbir Kapoor's Grey Character In Animal: "Nobody Is Forcing You To Watch"

New Delhi:
Rashmika Mandanna, in a recent interview, once again reacted to the Animal controversy. Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal minted crores at the box office but a section of the Internet slammed the film for its problematic take on masculinity and misogynistic tone.
What's Happening
In a recent conversation with Barkha Dutt on Mojo Story, Rashmika Mandanna was asked if she would smoke on screen. Though she has a reservation for smoking on screen, she has defended Ranbir Kapoor's flawed character in the film.
Rasmika Mandanna argued that audience should watch a film as a film and they can decide what they want to watch.
"I saw the film as a film. When a hero is smoking on screen, people say he is influencing others to do so. But today, it's very normal in society for people to smoke. I don't go to watch a film to be influenced in any way. Personally, I would never smoke on screen, but that's my perspective.
"If I am part of Animal, I will still say go watch a film as a film. Now, if someone is going to be influenced by a film, then watch your kind of films. Nobody is forcing anybody to watch a film. If that were the case, every film would be a blockbuster," said Rashmika.
Responding to the backlash the film received which is still making waves in the popular culture, Rashmika said, "There are grey characters in each one of us-we are never just black or white. We all have grey in us. It's just that Sandeep Reddy Vanga spoke about a messed-up character, and that's about it. It seems to me that people have celebrated it because it made the numbers. So I didn't feel I had to be disturbed by the conversation. We made this film, it worked, people liked or disliked it-that's their personal thing. People should really go watch a film for what it is, and not judge an actor for playing these characters. It's acting for a reason."
About Animal's Reception In The Industry
Celebrities like Javed Akhtar, Konkona Sen Sharma expressed their thoughts on the film and they didn't approve of the content of the film. However, filmmakers like Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap applauded the film for its style of making without delving much into the moral fabric of the film.
At the Forbes India Leadership Awards 2024, Karan Johar said, "I didn't go deep into the moral communication of the film - I was so swept by the narrative and the way the filmmaker told the story of it through sound design, screenplay, dialogue, character development, that as a filmmaker, I loved it."
In A Nutshell
Rashmika Mandanna, who played Ranbir Kapoor's love interest in the film, defended the superstar's flawed character in a recent interview.

Rashmika Mandanna weighs in on Deepika Padukone-Sandeep Reddy Vanga row over work hours: ‘Worse scenarios where actors work for 2-3 days straight'

Deepika Padukone exited Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit after reports of a conflict between the two regarding fixed working hours. The incident sparked a wider debate in the film industry about the working conditions of actors and crew members. Amidst the ongoing conversation, Rashmika Mandanna — who previously collaborated with Vanga in Animal — has weighed in on the work schedules of actors, including extreme cases where they work for 2-3 days straight. Speaking to Mojo Story about the issue, Rashmika shared her experience working across multiple film industries and offered perspective on the differences in working hours. 'I do work in multiple industries which is for example, in the South – Telugu industry, Kannada industry, or Tamil industry, we work 9 am to 6 pm, like it's our office hours. After shoot, we spend time with family, we go to sleep and we head to shoot the next day. In Hindi, I've realised it's a 9 am to 9 pm shift. It's 12 working hours so now as an actor, I am open to both of these working hours because this is what my firm requires.' Rashmika Mandanna pointed out that while the film industry is currently debating fixed working hours following the reported clash between Deepika Padukone and Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the conversation should ideally be held between the filmmaker and the actor prior to signing a contract. 'Today the whole country is debating about flexible hours and everything, but that is for discussion amongst the teams and figure out what works for them. It's their personal choices, so that's what I believe in. I feel like every film have to have that discussion and to be open to how many hours in the day they want to work,' she said. Rashmika further elaborated on how some film shoots go far beyond regular working hours, often stretching into consecutive days. 'Some films you can start 9 am to 9 pm, but they actually carries on till the next day, 9 pm, so you're working like 36 hours-48 hours. They are films where we work around the clock, it's pretty normal. So like today when the debate is going on, I know a lot of people have opinions about it, and rightly so. But it's fair that you went and told your director, 'Okay, this is the timeframe I want to work in. Can we do this.' Of course, it's their personal debate. But, just to throw a little light on these things, there are much worse scenarios happening where you are working 2-3 days without going home, you know without having a little nap.'
