An uncompromising voice for the marginalised: A tribute to V. Vasanthi Devi
Highly educated yet grounded, she never distanced herself from society and worked tirelessly for the upliftment of people.
Despite her intellectual brilliance, she remained deeply connected with the common people. That conenction made all the difference. She was active with Palli Kalvi Pathukappu Iyakkam ( movement for saving school education) till her last days.
She strongly opposed the National Education Policy and advocated free and equitable education for children. Vasanthi Devi had also pushed for empowerment of School management committees.
She firmly belifeved that schools, particularly in rural areas, must function with greater autonomy. She ensured that teachers and parents of underprivileged children were part of such committees. Fearless in her convictions, Vasanthi Devi contested a by-election against former Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa.
Vasanthi Devi was the most active chairperson of the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women. She conducted numerous public hearings and exposed atrocities committed against women and also visted women's prisons in the State. She approached every petition with utmost sincerity and dedication.
She never sought rewards for recognition. As the first vice chancellor for Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, she brought in several reforms. Her vision was pragmatic and rooted in empowerment.
Even in her final days, our conversations were about society at large. She remained lively and always seeking to empower people. She was a close friend of veteran Marxist leader, Mythili Sivaraman and a mentor to many, including me. In keeping with her ideals, she had willed her body to be donated to the Kilpauk Medical College. I recall how she ensured that I completed the procedures for her donation two years ago.
She lived by the principles she advocated. All her works, including research papers, have been given to Roja Muthiah Library. We were working to create a digital archive in her name.

He offered several valuable suggestions to further strengthen the institute's impact, including the effective implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, timely resolution of cases under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace (POSH), introduction of more industry-aligned skill development courses, and promotion of environmental sustainability. Joint Collector of Tirupati District, Shubham Bansal, and other officials were also present during the visit. Later in the day, the Governor proceeded to IISER Tirupati, where he was welcomed by Director Prof Santanu Bhattacharya and incharge Registrar Inderpreet Singh Kohli. A detailed presentation highlighted the institute's decade-long journey, emphasising its research milestones, educational innovation, and eco-friendly infrastructure. In his address, the Governor applauded IISER Tirupati's commitment to scientific excellence and sustainability. He expressed his profound appreciation for the institute's state-of-the-art infrastructure and particularly commended the sustainable features integrated into the campus, recognising them as a benchmark for modern educational institutions. The Governor's visit to these institutions is part of a broader initiative to assess and understand the evolution of higher education across the country.

Express View: Dishom Guru Shibu Soren
On a winter day in 1957, a 15-year-old boy in Gola block in undivided Hazaribagh district in Jharkhand was waiting for his father, who never returned. School teacher Sobaran Manjhi was killed by moneylenders, and young Shivcharan's life changed forever. The teenager pledged to end the exploitation by moneylenders and to fight for his people, the Adivasis. In the coming decades, the young man who came to be known as Shibu Soren and later affectionately called Guruji became the fulcrum of Adivasi politics. Shibu Soren, 81, who died on Monday, leaves behind a legacy of inspiring political vision and indefatigable grit mixed with some persistent controversies. After his father's death, Soren led a band of youth in Santhal Pargana and initiated a movement called Dhan Kati. The group encouraged Adivasis to harvest crops from lands that were illegally grabbed by moneylenders when they failed to pay off the debt. Soon, this movement became an organised struggle for the recognition of Adivasi rights over jal, jungle, zameen. In 1972, Soren, along with A K Roy, a Marxist leader, and Binod Bihari Mahato, founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and revived the movement for statehood. To bring the industrial workers, sadans, the non-tribal natives of Jharkhand, and Adivasis together was not an easy task. Soren realised that the dream of a separate Jharkhand would not be fulfilled without the participation of non-tribal communities. He sought to change the definition of Diku — for him, the term no longer only meant 'outsiders', but referred to those who exploited Jharkhand's resources. His dream of a separate state materialised only in 2000. Political instability, allegations of corruption and violence didn't let any of the CMs complete their tenure in the new state until 2014, when the BJP made Raghubar Das the first non-Adivasi chief minister. Soren's own political life was also shadowed by controversies. In 2004, within two months of becoming Union minister of coal and mines, he had to resign due to an arrest warrant for his alleged role in the Chirudih massacre of 1975, in which 10 people were killed. In 2008, a fast-track court acquitted him, citing lack of evidence. He faced allegations of taking bribes to save the minority government of P V Narasimha Rao in 1993. The SC in 1998 ruled that legislators enjoy impunity from criminal prosecution in bribery cases related to their votes and speeches in Parliament — the judgment was overruled in 2024. However, controversies could not take away from Soren's achievements. After Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda, Dishom Guru Shibu Soren was the leader who successfully reimagined Adivasi politics beyond the limits of identity, sub-nationalism and language.

Govt to build 835 schools in gram panchayat HQs
1 2 Bhubaneswar: CM Mohan Charan Majhi announced construction of 835 schools across Odisha after reviewing the ambitious Godabarish Mishra Model Primary School programme at Lok Seva Bhavan here on Monday. Each school, proposed to be set up at the headquarters of every gram panchayat, will serve as a feeder to the nearby higher secondary schools and will be built at an estimated cost of up to Rs 7 crore. The initiative aimed to strengthen foundational education and align with the objectives of National Education Policy (NEP)-2020. "These schools will provide national-level quality education tailored to the socio-economic and geographical needs of local communities. Special emphasis will be laid on ensuring ease of access for children from remote and tribal areas through free transportation," said Majhi during the review meeting. The schools to be selected under this programme must have more than 100 students, over two acres of available land, and classes ranging from pre-primary to Class VIII. Majhi also directed officials to adopt a more efficient teacher recruitment process and encouraged community involvement through active participation of parents, alumni, and local stakeholders. "Achieving foundational literacy and numeracy by Class III will be a top priority," he said, adding that efforts will be made to ensure every child receives quality education irrespective of location or background. The review meeting was attended by school and mass education minister Nityananda Gond, chief secretary Manoj Ahuja, development commissioner Anu Garg, principal secretary, finance, Sanjeev Mishra, chief minister's principal secretary Shashwat Mishra, school and mass education secretary Shalini Pandit, rural development secretary Yamini Sarangi and OSEPA director Ananya Das, among others.
