Google's Launches Gemma 3n to Deliver Smarter, Offline AI to Mobile Devices and Laptops

Technology giant Google is upping its AI game by giving a tough time to its competitors and launching back-to-back AI models. Now the world's top search engine giant has introduced Gemma 3n, an AI model that fits directly on smartphones, tablets, and laptops with no internet connection required.
Supporting text, images, audio, and video, it provides AI superpowers to devices you can hold in your hand. As an open-weight model, Gemma 3n can be analyzed and balanced by developers—representing a move to privacy-enabled on-device AI.
Google has shaken the industry with Gemma 3n, a super advanced new AI model that delivers on big promises of bringing an out-of-this-world AI experience to regular consumer hardware like phones and laptops. Instead of relying on cloud servers that traditional AI systems use, Gemma 3n operates locally—without an internet connection—providing both speed and privacy.
This shift reflects a broader trend in AI, which is away from large, centralized server models to small, efficient personal-device models. 3. Gemma is multimodal, i.e., it accepts multimodal inputs, and therefore, it can read not only text but also images, audio, and video. This has opened up new possibilities for real-time translation, speech recognition, image analysis, and much more, without sending any data to the cloud.
What makes Gemma 3n unique is its open-weight design. Unlike proprietary systems like OpenAI's GPT-4 or Google's own Gemini, open-weight models allow developers to download and run the model on their own machine. This leads to more flexible customization, rapid innovation, and more control over privacy.
Gemma 3n comes in two model sizes: a 5-billion-parameter model that can be run with as little as 2 GB of RAM and an 8-billion-parameter model that runs effectively with about 3 GB of RAM. Despite their small size, both models deliver performance comparable to older, larger models.
Google also included many smart tools in Gemma 3n to help it work well. Another new architecture—MatFormer—helps the model adapt to different devices by using resources more flexibly. Per-Layer Embeddings and KV Cache Sharing are details to further accelerate speed and shrink memory usage, especially for longer video and audio tasks.
The model's audio skills rely on Google's Universal Speech Model, which assists with on-device transcription and translation. The vision encoder uses MobileNet-V5 architecture for video processing up to 60 fps, even on smartphones.
Google has made the model available to developers and researchers by providing Gemma 3n through services like Hugging Face, Amazon SageMaker, Kaggle, and Google AI Studio. It fosters innovation and application development across other sectors, from healthcare and education to mobile apps and security tools.

Trump Terminates Talks with Canada Over Tax on US Tech Companies and Threatens It to Get Ready for the Consequences Within Seven Days

Trump announced that he is halting trade negotiations with Canada due to its decision to move forward with a tax targeting tech companies and added that Canada would face the consequences of this action within "seven days." In a Truth Social post, Trump slammed the move, referring to the tech tax as " a direct and blatant attack on our country." "Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately. We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period," Trump said in his post. Drawing Trump's Ire The Canadian government plans to implement the tax starting Monday. The digital services tax will impose a 3 percent charge on revenue earned from Canadian users by major companies such as Amazon, Google, Meta, Uber, and Airbnb. The tax will be applied retroactively, resulting in U.S. firms owing $2 billion by the end of the month. Speaking to reporters, the President said that "Canada has been a very difficult country to deal with over the years." However, he voiced certainty that Ottawa would eventually back off, saying, "We have all the cards. We have all - every single one." "We do a lot of business with Canada, but relatively little they do most of their businesses with us," he added. "Economically we have such power over Canada, I'd rather not use it." Throughout trade talks with various nations, Trump has criticized digital services taxes, labeling them as "non-tariff trade barriers." No Sympathy for Canada's Actions Canada and the United States have been in discussions on easing a range of high tariffs that Trump had previously placed on Canadian goods. The president accused Ottawa for "copying the European Union" with what he described as an "egregious" tax. Several countries are currently negotiating with the U.S. ahead of a July 9 deadline, after which Trump's hiked tariffs are set to be reinstated. However, Canada and Mexico are not part of those ongoing discussions. Earlier this year, Trump introduced tariffs on neighboring countries, including Canada and Mexico, in response to issues related to fentanyl trafficking and immigration. Negotiations with these nations are taking place separately from other trade talks. The president visited Canada earlier this month for the annual G7 summit but left ahead of schedule, citing developments concerning Iran. On Thursday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that several nations are expected to suspend their digital services taxes targeting U.S. tech giants, in return for Congressional Republicans agreeing to block a proposed "retaliatory tax" on foreign investors included in Trump's major legislative package. However, he did not specify which countries were part of this arrangement.

Tech firms warn 'Scattered Spider' hacks are targeting aviation sector

WASHINGTON :Tech companies Google and Palo Alto Networks are sounding the alarm over the "Scattered Spider" hacking group's interest in the aviation sector. In a statement posted on LinkedIn on Friday, Sam Rubin, an executive at Palo Alto's cybersecurity-focused Unit 42, said his company had "observed Muddled Libra (also known as Scattered Spider) targeting the aviation industry." In a similar statement, Charles Carmakal, an executive with Alphabet-owned Google's cybersecurity-focused Mandiant unit, said his company was "aware of multiple incidents in the airline and transportation sector which resemble the operations of UNC3944 or Scattered Spider." Neither executive identified which specific companies had been targeted, but Alaska Air Group-owned Hawaiian Airlines and Canada's WestJet have both recently reported being struck by unspecified cyber incidents. Neither company has gone into detail about the intrusions or commented on any potential links between the incidents and Scattered Spider. The loose-knit but aggressive hacking group, alleged to at least in part comprise youngsters operating in Western countries, has been blamed for some of the most disruptive hacks to hit the United States and Europe in recent memory. In 2023, hackers tied to the group broke into gaming companies MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment, partially paralyzing casinos and knocking slot machines out of commission.

OpenAI turns to Google's AI chips to power its products, source says

OpenAI has recently begun renting Google's artificial intelligence chips to power ChatGPT and its other products, a source close to the matter told Reuters on Friday. The ChatGPT maker is one of the largest purchasers of Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs), using the AI chips to train models and also for inference computing, a process in which an AI model uses its trained knowledge to make predictions or decisions based on new information. OpenAI planned to add Google Cloud service to meet its growing needs for computing capacity, Reuters had exclusively reported earlier this month, marking a surprising collaboration between two prominent competitors in the AI sector. For Google, the deal comes as it is expanding external availability of its in-house tensor processing units (TPUs), which were historically reserved for internal use. That helped Google win customers including Big Tech player Apple as well as startups like Anthropic and Safe Superintelligence, two ChatGPT-maker competitors launched by former OpenAI leaders. The move to rent Google's TPUs signals the first time OpenAI has used non-Nvidia chips meaningfully and shows the Sam Altman-led company's shift away from relying on backer Microsoft's data centers. It could potentially boost TPUs as a cheaper alternative to Nvidia's GPUs, according to the Information, which reported the development earlier. OpenAI hopes the TPUs, which it rents through Google Cloud, will help lower the cost of inference, according to the report. However, Google, an OpenAI competitor in the AI race, is not renting its most powerful TPUs to its rival, The Information said, citing a Google Cloud employee. Google declined to comment while OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters when contacted. Google's addition of OpenAI to its customer list shows how the tech giant has capitalized on its in-house AI technology from hardware to software to accelerate the growth of its cloud business.
