India–Spain Cultural Exchange Highlights Disability Inclusion through Film and Dialogue

The Wire2 days ago
New Delhi, July 4, 2025 — The Embassy of Spain to India, in collaboration with ETI Services and the Agatsu Foundation, hosted a landmark cultural event titled 'Sitaare Zameen Par: India and Spain in Conversation on Inclusion through Disability-focused Cinema' at Siri Fort Auditorium, New Delhi. Anchored in the power of storytelling, the event brought together filmmakers, disability rights advocates, and cultural leaders from India and Spain to explore how cinema can advance empathy, dignity, and inclusion for persons with disabilities.
The event opened with welcome remarks by Alfonso Herrero Corral, Counsellor at the Embassy of Spain, who emphasized the role of cultural diplomacy in amplifying the voices of persons with disabilities and the potential of cinema as a catalyst for social change.
The opening session, 'Our Journeys,' featured a compelling conversation with disability rights activists who reflected on their lived experiences and the challenges and transformations that shaped their advocacy. Moderated by Ira Khan, Founder and Director of the Agatsu Foundation, the panel included Sushama Nagarkar, Parag Namdeo, Divyanshu Ganatra, and Danish Mahajan. Their dialogue illuminated the systemic barriers faced by persons with disabilities and called for more inclusive, accessible, and affirming spaces—both on and off screen. Summarizing the conversations in the panel, Ira added, 'Disability isn't an inability — and it certainly isn't charity. What we heard today wasn't about exceptionalism, but about the right to live, work, and create with dignity. It's time we moved beyond tokenism, beyond pity, and started treating persons with disabilities as equals — not someday, but now'.
This was followed by an address by H.E. Juan Antonio March Pujol, Ambassador of Spain to India, who reaffirmed Spain's commitment to advancing disability inclusion and strengthening cultural collaboration with India. In his remarks, he highlighted the shared responsibility of nations to ensure that no one is left behind in narratives of progress, especially in the arts and public life. On the transformative potential of art to bring about impact, the Ambassador remarked, 'What cinema can do — in a way that policy or programming sometimes cannot — is shift imagination. It shows us what is possible, helps us see each other more fully, and reminds us that dignity must never be optional.'.
The second half of the event featured a dialogue on inclusion through movies, bringing together the cast and creators behind Sitaare Zameen Par and Spain's celebrated film Campeones. The panel included Aamir Khan (Actor and Producer, joining virtually), Jesús Vidal (Actor, Campeones, joining virtually), Aparna Purohit (CEO, Aamir Khan Productions), R.S. Prasanna (Director), and Divy Nidhi Sharma (Writer), and was moderated by Sukriti Chauhan, CEO of ETI Services. The conversation explored the ethics and impact of representation, the responsibilities of filmmakers, and the personal journeys behind both films. Speaking from his experience as a filmmaker, producer and actor, Aamir Khan remarked, 'I have a dream — that one day, there will be no segregation. We're so quick to judge, but often it's those we label as 'different' who show us the greatest empathy, warmth, and humanity. Inclusion means we stop creating separate spaces — and start creating shared ones'. Addressing the importance of gatherings like these, R.S Prasanna said, ''We need to create cinema that leaves a mark beyond the box office. If even one heart shifts because of a story we've told, that's enough. And today, more than ever, I believe we're ready to come together — in theatres and in spirit — to celebrate that kind of change.' Drawing from the multiple perspectives from the panel, Sukriti remarked, 'Representation is not just about being seen — it's about being understood. This conversation reminded us that inclusion isn't decorative. It is foundational to meaningful future developments.' The day concluded with a special screening of Sitaare Zameen Par, a film that resonated with audiences for its sensitive and transformative portrayal of childhood, disability, neurodivergence and the need for compassionate social systems, serving as a cinematic anchor for the day's conversations.
As the host for the day, Stephy Stephen, Senior Research Analyst at ETI Services, guided the flow of the event throughout the day.
This cultural exchange between India and Spain reinforces the belief that inclusive storytelling is not only about visibility, but about justice — and when lived experiences meet the lens of cinema, they build bridges across borders and bring marginalised voices to the center of public discourse.

Basu's last theatrical release Jagga Jasoos, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, opened with Rs 8.57 crore. The current film has also underperformed when compared to Sara Ali Khan's last release Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, which had an opening of Rs 5.49 crore. Metro In Dino is also facing stiff competition at the box office. Jurassic World Rebirth opened strongly with Rs 9 crore and continues to attract audiences. Sitaare Zameen Par Box Office Collection Day 17: Aamir Khan's movie nears ₹150 crore mark, mints THIS amount on Sunday

Sitaare Zameen Par Box Office Collection Day 17: Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par is less than ₹ 5 crore shy of achieving the ₹ 150 crore mark by the end of three weeks at the Indian box office. The movie, which had a significant hold on urban cities earlier, is now facing tough competition from Anurag Basu's Metro In Dino, which, too, focuses on the same target audience. However, the potential of both Sitaare Zameen Par and Metro In Dino in metro cities is being impacted by stiff competition from the Hollywood biggies – Jurassic World Rebirth and Brad Pitt's F1. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Sitaare Zameen Par earned ₹ 3.23 crore till 5 PM on Sunday, Day 17. With this, the movie's total earnings have climbed to ₹ 145.78 crore, which is nearly ₹ 4 crore away from the ₹ 150 crore mark. These are just early estimates from Sitaare Zameen Par's Sunday earnings. The numbers will be revised later to include evening and night show collections. Therefore, a decent jump in the second half of the day may help the Aamir Khan and Genelia D'Souza starrer to cross the mark by the end of the day. By the end of Saturday, Day 16, the movie had collected ₹ 142.55 crore, of which its Tamil version garnered ₹ 74,00,000 and its Telugu variant earned ₹ 44,00,000. Sitaare Zameen Par saw an overall 13.83% occupancy on July 6. For the Hindi version, the occupancy was as follows: The numbers for the evening and night shows are yet to be released. Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Mumbai, and Pune recorded the highest footfall for the day. Sitaare Zameen Par, directed by RS Prasanna, has earned a solid ₹ 217.5 crore globally in 16 days. Its overseas collection stood at ₹ 51.7 crore, while its India gross was ₹ 164.8 crore. The numbers are yet to be updated for Day 17.

Is Sitaare Zameen Par a hit or flop? As Aamir Khan film crosses ₹200 crore, we decode its box office performance

Aamir Khan seems to have slayed the demons haunting his films at the box office. Over the last seven years, the actor has been seen in only two films - Thugs of Hindostan and Laal Singh Chaddha. Both were monumental box office failures. That is why his most recent release, Sitaare Zameen Par, was crucial for the superstar's future. Now that the film has crossed ₹200 crore worldwide, people are calling it a success. We decode if it really is so. Sitaare Zameen Par box office performance decoded: Is the Aamir Khan film a hit or a flop? Sitaare Zameen Par box office collection The RS Prasanna directorial has earned ₹137.80 crore net ( ₹164.80 crore gross) in India in 15 days since it released in theatres. Add to it over $6 million gross from overseas, and Sitaare Zameen Par's worldwide gross stands at an impressive ₹217.50 crore. This makes it the fourth-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2025, behind only Chhaava, Housefull 5, and Raid 2. It is almost certain to enter the top 3 by the end of its run, and if the word of mouth sustains, it might just pip Housefull 5 to take the second spot, too. Interestingly, Sitaare Zameen Par has already surpassed the lifetime India collections of Laal Singh Chaddha and Ghajini and will surpass Thugs of Hindostan this Sunday (July 6). Then, only four Aamir films remain in front of it - Dangal, PK, Dhoom 3, and 3 Idiots. Is Sitaare Zameen Par a hit? But does just being in the company of Aamir's biggest hits mean that Sitaare Zameen Par is a hit itself? After all, Adipurush earned over ₹300 crore worldwide and yet was a massive flop. Fortunately, for Sitaare Zameen Par, that is not the case. The film, produced by Aamir Khan Productions, has a production budget of just ₹90 crore. According to trade sources, after adding the marketing and publicity budget, the film's landing cost is under ₹150 crore. It has already earned more than that through its domestic collections alone. Sitaare is still going strong, earning an estimated ₹7 crore worldwide on Saturday, the 16th day of its release. It showed a jump of over 140% on its third Saturday. These strong legs imply that the film won't die down for two more weeks, at least. Sitaare Zameen Par is already a hit, but it can just about be a superhit or even a blockbuster if it continues its run. Will the absent streaming rights hurt Aamir Khan? Sitaare Zameen Par is notable for being the only major Indian film in recent years to not sell its streaming rights for several crores. Aamir Khan made it clear that he does not intend to release the film on OTT, ever. So, the film has recovered some amount from music rights and satellite rights, but a big chunk of pre-release revenue is missing in the form of streaming rights. However, trade pundits argue that it may have worked in Aamir's favour. Aamir Khan was felicitated by exhibitors for Sitaare Zameen Par's success. Sitaare Zameen Par has shown jumps of 90-140% on each of the three Saturdays it has spent in the theatres. Clearly, the audience wants to see the film in theatres, partly because of the good reviews, and partly because they know it won't be on OTT once it leaves the theatres. That exclusivity has certainly bumped up the film's collections by a few crores, hopefully offsetting whatever Aamir stood to gain had he sold the rights. But clearly, for Aamir, the non-release of Sitaare Zameen Par is not about money. It is about allowing the film a clean, distraction-free theatrical run. In that, he is succeeding. The glee of the exhibitors, who recently felicitated him as 'box office ka baap' is proof enough.
