Lord Sebastian Coe named chair-designate for Old Trafford Regeneration project
The former IOC president previously chaired a task force set up by United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to look at stadium options for United amid a wider regeneration of the surrounding area.

He will now play a key part in the development of the 100,000-seater stadium, which Ratcliffe wants to be the 'Wembley of the north'.
Coe's appointment was announced at an event in Manchester city centre on Wednesday.
He said in a statement which appeared on Manchester United's website: 'Throughout my career, I've seen the difference that sports-led regeneration can make in fostering strong communities and acting as a catalyst for economic growth.
'That was certainly true of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics – and now, I believe, Greater Manchester's moment has come.
'Working with Trafford Council and the Mayor, there's huge potential to bring new homes and jobs to the area around the Manchester United stadium. And looking ahead, I see a chance to bring the FIFA Women's World Cup to a new Old Trafford Stadium in 2035. The home nations are the sole bidder, which presents a rare opportunity to bid to host the global football family.
'But this is about so much more than just a stadium. It's about listening to and working with residents to create a vibrant, inclusive district, with high quality housing, green spaces, world class leisure and education facilities, and improved transport links.
'Twenty years on from securing the Olympic and Paralympic Games for this country, I'm ready to help deliver a vision of equal scale and ambition. I can't wait to get started.'
United revealed a potential design for their new home and chief executive Omar Berrada says this is a big step forward.
'This is an exciting decade for the region, and we warmly welcome the inclusion of the Old Trafford Regeneration project at the heart of the Greater Manchester Strategy.

'We are also delighted by the appointment of Lord Coe as chair-designate of the Mayoral Development Corporation; the continuity it brings for the wider project will be a huge positive.

'In March, we announced our ambition for a new stadium and since then we have been progressing those plans.

With that in mind, Mirror Football has outlined some of the biggest Manchester United transfer stories and gossip. Barcelona make Rashford "priority" target Marcus Rashford will be desperate to make his exit from United this summer after being cast aside by Amorim, forced to train by himself away from the squad at Carrington. United did give Rashford extra time to find a new club following his short loan spell at Aston Villa last season - and now the England star may have found a solution. According to Sky in Germany, Barcelona had seen a bid for Liverpool winger Luis Diaz rejected and are now prepared to go "all-in" on Rashford. The report says boss Hansi Flick has already given the green light to the move, which Barcelona hope will be a loan deal. United might also have to subsidise a portion of Rashford's wages due to the player's eye-watering £325,000-a-week wages and he is said to be willing to lower his wage demands in order to secure an exit. Gyokeres reconsidering United move For months, Manchester United were being talked about as the leading frontrunners to sign Viktor Gyokeres, due to the striker's relationship with boss Amorim. The Portuguese coach helped turn the Swedish star into one of the deadliest strikers in world football but United's failure to qualify for European football saw them fall away from contention - with Arsenal stepping up as favourites. It's understood Arsenal are offering a package of €65m (£56m) plus future payments of €5m and €10m (£8.6m) in add-ons but are around £4m off of Sporting's valuation. Sporting have asked for a "cooling off period" before restarting talks and Gyokeres has reportedly had enough of being patient and has gone on strike at the club - refusing to turn up for the start of pre-season. And now Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha have claimed Gyokeres has opened the door to United once again and is giving the Red Devils a "second look" after being forced to wait to join Arsenal. United want to add another forward player alongside Cunha and would jump at the chance to sign Gyokeres, who netted 54 goals in 52 games last season, as they continue to reach an impasse in talks for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo. Mbeumo "frustrated" over transfer delay Another player who has been left impatient over a move is United target Mbeumo, who the Red Devils have been in talks to such for much of the summer so far. United have had two bids rejected for Mbeumo, the latest being one of £62.5m - the same fee they paid for Cunha. It's understood Brentford are looking for more than £60m but want the full fee paid upfront, while United want to pay it in instalments. Mbeumo was Brentford's star player last season, netting 20 goals in the Premier League and is seen as a player who could overhaul United's fortunes. But United are yet to return with a third bid and the saga is threatening to drag out even further - causing "frustration" from Mbeumo. Cameroon coach Ashu Cyprian Besong said: 'Yes, obviously he's very frustrated with how long it's taken. But he's a professional and anticipates these things. I spoke to him about a week ago and he is very calm with everything that is going on. "But of course, he's already told them he wants to go to United. He just wanted the two clubs to find an agreement, as he's very grateful for the opportunity that he's been given by Brentford in his career."

Ruben Amorim risks angering Marcus Rashford with decision on Alejandro Garnacho
Manchester United are aiming to sell a crop of unwanted stars, including Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, but the latter has been allowed to return to full training with the rest of the squad Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has risked the wrath of Marcus Rashford after reportedly allowing Alejandro Garnacho to train with his team-mates at Carrington - while the England star continues to be isolated from the squad. Garnacho and Rashford both look set for exits this summer after falling out with the Portuguese boss last season. The Argentine lost his place in the team towards the end of the 2024-25 campaign and appeared irked when Amorim dropped him for the Europa League final defeat to Spurs - and suggested he was unhappy with the decision after the game. Garnacho also aimed a barb by claiming United had a "s***" season and has been linked with the likes of Napoli and Chelsea. But the 21-year-old has reportedly been given permission to resume training with the rest of his United team-mates while his future continues to be discussed, according to ESPN. He managed an impressive season individually as he scored 11 goals and assisted nine, but could not stop the team finishing 15th. He still has interest from a number of teams across Europe, including from Italy and Germany, the report adds. As for Rashford, his future looks much bleaker. The forward was sent on loan to Aston Villa in January after leaving Amorim unimpressed with his training performances while also publicly stating his desire to leave. Rashford, along with Garnacho and three other players, had extra time off to find a new club before returning to training, but returned to Carrington on Monday and Tuesday - working by himself individually. Rashford has been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona, who are still looking for a new winger after top target Nico Williams signed a ten-year deal with Athletic Bilbao. According to reports in Spain, Rashford would be willing to take a sizeable pay cut on his £325,000-a-week wages to move to Barca - who want a loan deal given that United are demanding a £40m fee. He is understood to have no future at Old Trafford as long as Amorim remains manager - after the coach said he would rather name his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital on the bench rather than a player who "does not give the maximum". The arrival of Matheus Cunha and the club's interest in Bryan Mbeumo further pushes him down the pecking order. Other players who have been told to find new clubs alongside Rashford and Garnacho and Jadon Sancho, who looks set to join Juventus, and Tyrell Malacia.

British man, 58, accused over '£78million fake wine scam' is extradited to the US and appears in court
A British man has appeared in a New York court to face charges in connection with an alleged £78million wine scam. James Wellesley, 58, pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on Friday in Brooklyn federal court following his extradition from the United Kingdom, where he was arrested in 2022. He faces claims he defrauded investors in a Ponzi-style scheme that conning them into lending money to non-existent high-net-worth wine collectors. Wellesley was ordered to be detained pending trial on wire fraud and money laundering charges. His co-defendant, Stephen Burton, was extradited from Morocco in 2023 after using a bogus Zimbabwean passport to enter that country. Burton, a 60-year-old British national, has also been detained and pleaded not guilty to similar charges in the same Brooklyn court. Federal prosecutors say that Burton and Wellesley ran Bordeaux Cellars, a company which they said brokered loans between investors and high-net-worth wine collectors. The pair allegedly solicited just over £78 million from investors in New York and other areas from June 2017 to February 2019, approaching them at places including conferences in the United States and overseas. The men told lenders that the loans would be backed by wine they stored for wealthy collectors and promised profits through interest payments, prosecutors alleged. However, these collectors 'did not actually exist and Bordeaux Cellars did not maintain custody of the wine purportedly securing the loans,' the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York argue. Instead, officials said, Burton and Wellesley used loan money provided by investors for themselves and to make fraudulent interest payments to other investors. Christopher Raia, assistant director in charge of the FBI New York office, said: 'James Wellesley and his business partner allegedly concocted an elaborate scheme defrauding investors out of millions of dollars to finance their own personal expenses. 'Their alleged deceit spread across years and continents. 'Today's arraignment signals to all criminals that the FBI will practice the same resolve in bringing perpetrators to justice.' New York Special Agent, Ricky Patel added: 'James Wellesley and his co-conspirator are accused of masterminding their nearly $100 million international fraud scheme that exploited the unsuspecting public, including New Yorkers, for their own selfish enrichment. 'As alleged, the defendants claimed Bordeaux Cellars boasted a high-value wine stockpile and a clientele of "high-net-worth wine collectors" – and in turn profited handsomely – all while they swindled investors out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more. 'Let it be known, regardless of the nature of the transnational criminal scheme, HSI New York, alongside our law enforcement partners, will continue to adapt and evolve to fight global and domestic financial crimes wherever and whenever possible.' The two men have been charged with wire fraud conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy. If convicted, the two face up to 20 years in prison each. United States Attorney, Joseph Nocella said: 'Today's arraignment sends a message to all perpetrators of global fraud schemes that my Office will work tirelessly to ensure they answer for crimes committed in the United States.'
