Chong Wei comes close to becoming online scam victim, urges all to be careful
PETALING JAYA: Not even a national icon is safe from scammers and Datuk Lee Chong Wei nearly became their latest target.
The three-time Olympic silver medallist Chong Wei revealed that he received a suspicious call around noon on Thursday (May 8) from someone claiming to be 'Roslan' from the Cyberjaya Cyber Crime Prevention Unit.
What shocked him most was that the caller also read out his identity card and phone numbers, and accused him of being involved in a scam operation based in Melaka.
Outraged by the baseless accusation, Chong Wei insisted on reporting the matter to the police and demanded the office address of the so-called enforcement officer.
The call, however, was abruptly cut off after a brief exchange.
Following the incident, Chong Wei urged the public to remain vigilant and not fall prey to these syndicates, which often use fear and greed to manipulate victims.
'Never reveal your IC number, bank details, passwords or OTP codes. Don't make any transfers or scan QR codes sent to you. Always verify through official channels – call legitimate numbers or visit actual websites or offices.
'If the call involves a family member, contact them directly.
"Mark scam numbers on apps or your phone to help warn others. Remind your loved ones, especially the elderly.
"Set a 'secret password' for your family if needed. If your data has been compromised, change your passwords immediately, freeze your accounts and lodge a police report. Keep all evidence,' he wrote on his social media.

Fencing-French Olympic fencer cleared as CAS accepts positive test linked to kissing partner
Paris 2024 Olympics - Fencing - Women's Foil Team Classifications 5-8 - Grand Palais, Paris, France - August 01, 2024. Ysaora Thibus of France is seen during the bout against China. REUTERS/Albert Gea (Reuters) -The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has overturned French Olympic fencer Ysaora Thibus's four-year suspension for doping, ruling that her positive test for a banned substance was caused by kissing her then-boyfriend, American fencer Race Imboden. Thibus, silver medallist in team foil at the Tokyo Games, had tested positive for ostarine, a prohibited muscle-building substance, during a competition in Paris in January 2024. However, CAS concluded there was no intentional wrongdoing, finding it scientifically plausible that repeated kissing over several days with Olympic medallist Imboden — who was taking ostarine at the time — led to accidental contamination. The court dismissed an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which had sought a four-year suspension. The sport's top court instead upheld a previous ruling from the International Fencing Federation's doping disciplinary tribunal (DDT) that had already cleared Thibus of any fault. "The CAS Panel ruled that the antidoping rule violation for the presence of ostarine was not intentional, and that it is not questionable that Ms Thibus bears no fault or negligence," the court said in a statement. "The DDT decision is upheld and the appeal is dismissed." The case has drawn comparisons to an incident in 2009 involving French tennis player Richard Gasquet, who was exonerated after arguing that he had tested positive for cocaine after kissing someone at a nightclub. Thibus was able to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics following the initial DDT ruling, finishing fifth in the team foil event on home soil. Millions of people took to the streets across France on Saturday evening for the Fete de la Musique, with authorities reporting "unprecedented crowds" in Paris. (Photo by ROMAIN PERROCHEAU / AFP) Before the party, posts on Snapchat and other social media had called for targeting women during the festivities. The interior ministry said 145 victims reported being stabbed with needles across the country, with Paris police reporting 13 cases in the capital. Officials did not specify if they were cases of so-called needle spiking with date-rape drugs such as Rohypnol or GHB, used by attackers to render victims confused or inconscious and vulnerable to sexual assault. But at least three people reported feeling unwell, and "Some victims were taken to hospital for toxicological tests," the ministry said. In Paris, investigations were opened after three people including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old male, reported being stabbed in three different locations in Paris, prosecutors said. All three suffered from feeling unwell. Twelve people suspected of being responsible for the stabbings were arrested, the interior ministry said. They are believed to have targeted around 50 victims, according to a police source. Apart from those suspects, more than 370 people were detained during the festival on various charges, including nearly 90 people in Paris. Fourteen participants in the festivities were seriously injured, including a 17-year-old who was hospitalised after being found sitting on the street with stab wounds to the lower abdomen. Thirteen members of law enforcement were also injured. - AFP
