Rolly Romero scores knockdown in decision win over Ryan Garcia in Times Square Ryan Garcia was dropped and outworked by Rolly Romero in his return from a one-year suspension.
Rolly Romero spoiled Ryan Garcia's return to action.
In the headlining bout of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves in the heart of New York's Times Square, Romero (17-2) turned in a solid performance against Garcia (24-2), including scoring the only knockdown of the fight, to win on the scorecards. After 12 rounds, the official judges scored the fight 115-112, 115-112, and 118-109.
Garcia, who returned to action after a one-year suspension, worked a speedy, stiff left jab in the opening round. It was a repeated weapon of choice that set the tone for Garcia's offense. Romero landed a few punches to the body, but was clearly outworked in the opening round.
Romero quickly changed the entire fight in the opening exchanges of Round 2.
Romero rocked Garcia with a pair of hard hooks, sending him to the canvas for the count. Garcia promptly recovered, and the fight continued. Romero attempted to quickly capitalize after the eight count, but Garcia kept him honest with a stiff counter.
Romero's confidence grew in the third round as Garcia's output became slightly more subdued. It was a close frame without any big moments, but Garcia had some nice moments in the closing seconds. In the fourth, Garcia found a home for the left jab as the round wore on, but remained cautious of Romero's forward charges as he landed to the body.
A heated exchange occurred immediately at the start of Round 5, in which Garcia landed the cleaner shots. Garcia kept a steady pace, but didn't put together many combinations as Romero continued to look for punches to the body. The sixth round was another close frame, where Garcia landed a clean left hook as Romero kept him guessing with his movement and body work.
Despite displaying an assertive stance, Garcia's output left more to be desired from his corner. In Rounds 8 and 9, Garcia's left jab scored, but Romero kept things on his terms with more activity as he came forward, mixing up his targets. Romero continued to set the tone in Round 10. He even took risks by overswinging with big punches, some of which missed badly, while a couple connected.
With two rounds remaining, the fight seemed firmly in Romero's control. Garcia's corner pleaded with him to get busy and let his hands go. In Round 10, not much changed despite the fiery speech from Garcia's coach, Derrick James. Romero simply didn't allow Garcia to mount a comeback charge, as he was the one coming forward until the final bell.
Despite winning the fight, Romero was humble in victory and said he believes Garcia should still get his rematch against Devin Haney next, who defeated Jose Ramirez in the co-feature. Garcia said he was affected by the knockdown and credited Romero for good work throughout the fight.

LSU baseball transfer portal: Tigers add Big Ten reliever with strikeout stuff

LSU baseball's latest addition from the transfer portal comes from the Big Ten in former Oregon pitcher Santiago Garcia, according to reports on Tuesday. The lefty made 22 appearances out of the bullpen in 2025. Through 28 innings pitched, he posted a 4.18 ERA and 38 strikeouts to 18 walks. Opposing hitters bat .165 against him. Garcia made appearances in three of the Ducks' four postseason games, including an inning apiece in the Eugene Regional during the NCAA Tournament. He surrendered one run on two hits during those appearances. The southpaw allowed two or more runs just four times in 2025. In Oregon's first Big Ten season, Garcia consistently earned high-leverage appearances and pitched well under pressure. He'll join the Tigers' bullpen, which will experience a shakeup as LSU's two starters, Kade Anderson and Anthony Eyanson, head to the MLB. Garcia is the third pitcher brought in by head coach Jay Johnson following LSU's national championship win. He joins fellow lefties Danny Lachenmayer and Ryler Smart.

LIV Golf star eyes Open ticket that could see him knock mentor out of Portrush

Determind David Puig fancies an Open date and could knock mentor Sergio Garcia out of Royal Portrush. The Spanish kid has planted himself into contention to win LIV Dallas and, at the same time, storm into the 153rd Open Championship at the expense of his illustrious compatriot and Fireballs team-mate. Advertisement The scrap for a place at Portrush has intensified in Texas with a spot open to the highest-ranked player in the LIV individual standings after the event getting a ticket to Northern Ireland. READ MORE: LIV Golf star admits winning The Open at Portrush offers last real Ryder Cup hope READ MORE: Rory McIlroy stunned Portrush with incredible feat at just 16 as he returns 20 years on Currently fourth, those above him at the start of play, Joaquin Niemann, Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm, have secured their spots in the Open field and Garcia can join them if he stays in his current position. However, Puig is making a serious late run as his mentor sits out of the points with a round to go. Advertisement Victory for the 23-year-old would net him 40 points in the individual standings and move him past his countryman unless his captain somehow manages to get third. Puig, who is four shots behind leader Patrick Reed with 18 holes to go, could also get in by finishing solo fourth or better if Garcia stays outside the points. It's a target and he said: 'It's definitely a goal of mine. Anytime someone can avoid going to the qualifier, it's great. That's the main goal. "Obviously, I want to play the Open. It's one of the best tournaments of the year. I really want to be there, and I'm trying to do as much as I can and my part to be able to be there. Advertisement 'We've been working pretty hard these last couple weeks. I thought my game was in the right shape and I've been playing good. It's great to be in this position.' Puig is due to play a qualifier at Royal Cinque Ports on Tuesday and said: "Just a direct flight to London, rent a car and drive. "I played the course two years ago so I'm not planning on doing a practice round but maybe walk the course a little bit. "The weather is going to be great, which is not common near London. If the weather is good, maybe hit a few balls and get ready for Tuesday." -Credit:AP However, a LIV Dallas win could negate the need to go and, ironically, on the eve of the tournament, Garcia poured praise onto Puig and said: 'I don't know if he's a revelation because I've been watching him since he started playing professionally at the end of 2022 and I see his progression as something normal. Advertisement "He played very well last year and had a very solid season. Obviously, he's playing even better this year. He's a great player and, if he continues to improve like he has in recent years, he can truly achieve some very, very good things.' Now the kid can repay the compliments by knocking Garcia out of his cherished place at Portrush with the 45-year-old desperate to take his place and stay in the fight for Ryder Cup selection. It's a key period for Garcia as he explained: 'I'd say every moment is important, but without a doubt, these five consecutive tournaments I probably have now are important because of their position in the season and because there's a Major in between. "Starting now in Dallas, then the BMW International Open, Valderrama, which I'm really looking forward to because I'm defending the individual and team titles. "If I play well here in Dallas, I'll qualify for the British Open and wouldn't have to play qualifiers. Finally [LIV] UK. It's obviously an important part of the year and I have to try to do my best.'

Sergio Garcia has secret Ryder Cup weapon for team Europe as he eyes dream double

Fired-up Sergio Garcia reckons his valuable Ryder Cup experience could make him a big asset to Europe as he eyes a dream Bethpage and Open double. The 45-year-old is currently playing the LIV event in Dallas aiming to book his ticket to next month's cracker at Royal Portrush. Advertisement Garcia hopes an outing at The Open will see him complete a special set of summer tournaments during a huge five weeks where he will also tee-up back on the DP World Tour at next week's BMW International Open in Germany and at LIV Andalucia on his beloved Valderrama and in the UK. He's excited for the challenges and, speaking to Marca, he said: 'I'd say every moment is important, but without a doubt, these five consecutive tournaments I probably have now are important because of their position in the season and because there's a Major in between. 'Starting now in Dallas, then the BMW International Open, Valderrama, which I'm really looking forward to because I'm defending the individual and team titles. If I play well here in Dallas, I'll qualify for the British Open and wouldn't have to play qualifiers. 'Finally [LIV] UK. It's obviously an important part of the year and I have to try to do my best. Advertisement 'I've always loved and been motivated to play in Spain. Every time I play in my country is very special, and fortunately, I've had a lot of success in my career when I've played tournaments at home. 'It's beautiful, it motivates me a lot to play in front of my fans, but Valderrama is even more special because it's my favourite course and I've always been very good at it. Sergio Garcia -Credit:AP 'If everything goes well and nothing unusual happens physically, I'd definitely like to be at the Spanish Open. 'I'll try to play in some other tournaments at the end of summer or late fall.' Garcia firmly believes he still has the chance within this key current timeframe to convince captain Luke Donald he is worthy of a place in the side for the clash against United States. Advertisement Europe's record points scorer feels he can be an asset and played alongside the skipper when the continent was last successful on away soil at Medinah in 2012. He said: 'There are still almost three months to go until the Ryder Cup, although a little less time until the team selection and I think I'm in a position where I would have chosen it at the beginning of the year. 'If they had told me I was going to be in this position and with a chance of being on the Ryder Cup team, obviously I would have taken it without a doubt. 'Now what I have to do is keep showing my strengths, keep showing my golf, especially what I showed in the first third of the year. Advertisement 'The good thing is that I know I'm on Luke's ballot and I just have to keep showing that I can do good things and that I can help the team. The Ryder Cup is my favourite golf tournament in the world. 'It would be incredible to be able to compete in another Ryder Cup, especially knowing that in New York, at Bethpage, it's going to be tough and maybe a little experience always comes in handy.'
