Kirkcaldy to receive funding boost in spending review

The exact figure being invested in the town has yet to be unveiled, however the UK Government confirmed on Wednesday that £240 million of capital from 2026-27 to 2029-30 will be put into local projects across the UK.
It comes after the town's local MP Melanie Ward urged the Chancellor to invest in the region.
Speaking in the House of Commons on Wednesday, the Chancellor said investment in Kirkcaldy's seafront and high street would 'create jobs and new business opportunities'.
The plans were outlined alongside measures to boost communities across the UK, with Ms Reeves stating: 'The renewal of Britain must be felt everywhere.'
She said additional funding would be invested to support up to 350 communities, particularly those in deprived areas, while a total of £52 billion was announced for the Scottish Government.
'Backing our nations and regions means backing our devolved governments,' she said.
The Chancellor added: 'I know the pride that people feel in their communities. I see it everywhere I go. But I also know that for too many people, there is a sense that something has been lost as high streets have declined, as community spaces have closed, as jobs and opportunities have gone elsewhere.
'The renewal of Britain must be felt everywhere. Today, I am pleased to announce additional funding to support up to 350 communities, especially those in the most deprived areas – funding to improve parks, youth facilities and libraries.'
Scottish Labour's Melanie Ward, MP for Cowdenbeath and Kirkcaldy, told the House of Commons on Monday: "Many times I've raised with the Minister as well as Business Ministers and Treasury Ministers, the need for regeneration funding for Kirkcaldy High Street.
'The brilliant people of our town deserve a modern town centre that makes the most of our incredible seafront and all it has to offer. Ahead of the Spending Review this week, can the Minister assure me that my message has been heard?'

Full list of cars set for £3,750 price cut due to new rule

Drivers of these vehicles could be set to enjoy thousands of pounds in discounts. Drivers buying any of these 40 cars could be eligible for a massive £3,750 discount due to a new Labour rule change. Electric Vehicles (EVs) from brands including Renault, Vauxhall, FIAT, and MINI will see huge price cuts due to the UK Government's new EV grant. ‌ Labour's new £650m electric car scheme hopes to make EVs more affordable by offering money-saving discounts on brand new EVs priced under £37,000. Labour confirmed that only vehicles from brands committed to a Science-Based Target (SBT) for cutting emissions will qualify for the scheme. ‌ The Government hopes the EV grant will help to narrow the upfront cost difference between petrol cars and electric models. Previous polls suggest upfront costs are still a key barrier to motorists making the transition. ‌ The grants are part of the UK's Plan for Change, designed to help households save money while accelerating the switch to greener, zero-emission cars. Alongside the electric car grant, the government also announced it would invest £25m to help local councils install 'cross-pavement' charging solutions. Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), claimed the motoring industry wasn't asked for input before the grant was launched, reports Birmingham Live. ‌ The SMMT had been pushing for a VAT cut on EVs sold to private buyers, saying that would do more to help the people who really need support. 'We get the ambition behind it,' said Hawes, 'but it's still not very clear.' Speaking when the news was first announced, Iain Reid, head of Editorial at Carwow, welcomed the new savings. Iain said: 'The Government's EV subsidy scheme is a welcome turning point – and one we've long been calling for. The decision to reintroduce support at the point of sale is exactly what's needed to rebuild consumer confidence; a saving of up to £3,750 available until 2028/29 could be decisive for many households considering an electric car for the first time. ‌ 'Manufacturers have done their part by bringing EV prices closer to petrol equivalents, and a grant targeted at the more affordable end of the market will help boost momentum.' Portugal economy bounces back with 0.6% quarterly growth

LISBON, July 30 (Reuters) - Portugal's economy bounced back to expand 0.6% in the second quarter from the previous three-month period when it shrank a revised 0.4%, the National Statistics Institute said on Wednesday, citing strong private consumption. Gross domestic product also grew 1.9% year-on-year, in an acceleration from a 1.7% growth in January-March, it said. The Bank of Portugal slashed its full-year growth forecast in June to 1.6% from 2.3% citing global trade tensions. Last year, the economy grew 1.9%. The government has so far stuck to its estimate of 2.1% growth this year.

How to stay and play at Donald Trump's brand new golf course in Scotland?

The 36-hole Trump International Golf Links resort in Aberdeenshire will open to the public next month. Donald Trump officially opened his new golf course in Aberdeenshire yesterday, Tuesday, July 2. The controversial US President paid tribute to the late Scottish actor Sean Connery and recalled the long-running planning disputes that once delayed the development. ‌ Speaking to guests on the first tee at Trump International Golf Links, the former US President praised Scotland's First Minister John Swinney, calling him a 'terrific guy' following a dinner the night before. ‌ Reflecting on the history of the site, Trump said: 'We started with a beautiful piece of land, but we made it much more beautiful. The area has really welcomed us. ‌ "But you'll remember at the beginning it wasn't quite a welcome... but it wasn't bad. But with time they've liked us more and more.' Trump also credited Connery with helping push the controversial project forward. He said: 'The land, they said, couldn't get zoned, it was an impossibility. "And Sean Connery said 'let the bloody bloke build his golf course'. Once he said that, everything came into line.' ‌ Now open for visitors, the luxury golf destination outside Aberdeen is accepting bookings for both accommodation and tee times. Where to stay Guests can stay at Trump MacLeod House & Lodge Hotel, located on the former Menie Estate near Balmedie. The five-star property is described as a traditional Scottish baronial mansion, set across 1,400 acres of coastal land. ‌ It features 19 luxury guest rooms, Italian marble staircases, traditional fireplaces, intimate dining and bar areas, a whisky bar, outdoor hot tub, spa facilities and hidden staircases. Personal butler service is available. The hotel is open for exclusive hire, weddings, corporate events or individual bookings. Prices for a house or lodge room in the week beginning Sunday, August 18, start from £628, depending on length of stay and availability. ‌ How to book tee times Golfers can book tee times on the property's two courses starting August 13. Prices are set at £495 per person per round. A 'Greatest 36' option, combining both courses, is available until October 31. Tee times are being allocated on a first-come, first-served basis during the opening months, and multiple levels of club membership are offered, though prices have not been disclosed. ‌ Golf packages and pricing For those looking to combine luxury stays with golf, a number of packages are now on offer. A two-night package, which includes two rounds of golf (one on each course), a welcome dinner, breakfast, and a dram of whisky, is priced at £2,500 per person or £4,000 for two people sharing. This offer is valid between August 25 and October 31, 2025. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today.
