New film at Cannes holds mirror to Germany's past
Amrum, which premiered out of competition, marks Akin's return to the festival in southern France eight years after his last competition entry In the Fade, starring Diane Kruger - the Best Actress winner at Cannes in 2017 for her performance.
Amrum takes place in 1945, said Akin, but the questions raised about how to handle Germany's past remain unresolved.
"We (Germans) had to be bureaucratic with everything. Also with handling the past," said Akin. "We're so slow."
The process of "denazification" imposed by the Allies at the end of the war made it seem like Germany had stripped its population of Nazi ideologies, which isn't true, said Akin.
"To realise that, to look in the mirror - you know, there's a German angst to look in the mirror. My film is a mirror."
Set on the North Sea island of the same name, Amrum is based on the experiences of Akin's 85-year-old mentor and co-writer Hark Bohm, himself a director who decided to hand the project off due to his age.
The film follows 12-year-old Nanning, played by newcomer Jasper Ole Billerbeck, after his mother, a staunch Nazi supporter, falls into a depression upon learning about the death of Adolf Hitler the day she gives birth.
The Hitler Youth member sets off to find the only thing his mother doesn't refuse to eat - white bread with butter and honey.
Those ingredients are in short supply due to the war, which otherwise feels far removed from the isolated island.
Kruger teamed up with Akin again for Amrum, in the role of Tessa, a potato farmer opposed to Hitler who is reported to the local Nazi authorities for traitorous talk for discussing the inevitability of the war's impending end.
To cast Nanning, Akin decided to search outside of urban centres and found Billerbeck at a sailing school, he told Reuters.
"Big city kids, they can't handle nature," he said.

Watch: 'Now I love her ad' - Trump praises actress Sweeney
US President Donald Trump has praised actress Sydney Sweeney, after a reporter told him she was a registered Republican. Sweeney, known for her roles in HBO shows Euphoria and White Lotus, stirred controversy last week after an American Eagle ad campaign launched with the tagline 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans'. Multiple local news outlets on Sunday reported the HBO star's voting records show her being a registered Republican. Reuters has not independently verified this. When told by a reporter that Sweeney was a registered Republican, Mr Trump said: "Now I love her ad." He made his comments on an airport tarmac in Allentown, Pennsylvania, en route back to the White House from a weekend in Bedminster, New Jersey. "You'd be surprised at how many people are Republicans", added Mr Trump. The American Eagle campaign starring Sweeney caused an internet meltdown when it was released. Some social media users were outraged, saying the wordplay of the tagline 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans', coupled with the actor's blue eyes and blonde hair, has racial undertones. Others, though, praised the campaign as lacking "woke" politics. "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour. My genes are blue," Sweeney, wearing denim on denim, says in one video. People across social media have levelled criticism spanning the gamut, with some saying the campaign promotes "white supremacy" and "eugenics" while others have called it "sterile," a sign of "regression" or simply "rage bait." But many others have applauded the campaign, posting comments like "woke is broke!" and "culture shift!" Republican senator Ted Cruz of Texas posted a photo of Sweeney on X and wrote, "Wow. Now the crazy Left has come out against beautiful women. I'm sure that will poll well." American Eagle said its collaboration with Sweeney was meant to "further elevate its position as the #1 jeans brand for Gen Z." In the wake of the chatter triggered by the campaign, Washington Post fashion critic Rachel Tashjian wrote that whether or not the ad had racial undertones or anything intentional to say beyond selling jeans, it "is part of a wave of imagery of influencers, pop stars and musicians that feels tethered to the values of another time." "For the past five or six years, it seemed like fashion and pop culture were very interested in -- even dedicated to -- body positivity. Now we're being fed a lot of images of thinness, whiteness and unapologetic wealth porn," Ms Tashjian said.

American Eagle's stock soars after Trump weighs in on controversial Sydney Sweeney ad; Fox host fawns over her ‘gun range'
Conversations around the clothing brand's punny 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' ad campaign have consumed the internet, so much so that the president gave his two cents on the matter Monday morning. Since then, the brand's stock has skyrocketed. As of Monday afternoon, the company's stock was up 2.57 points, or nearly 24pc. At 8.56 a.m. Monday, Trump praised the ad and noted the Euphoria star was a registered Republican and 'has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there,' he wrote on Truth Social. The president also took a jab at what he believed to be 'WOKE,' including singer Taylor Swift, writing: 'Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be.' The company's stock started climbing, reaching 12.47 points by 10.15am. At 10.25am, Trump took down the post and reposted it with a corrected spelling of Sweeney's first name. The stock has continued to rise since. The president first weighed in on the ad campaign Sunday. 'She's a registered Republican?' the president asked while speaking to reporters. 'Now I love her ad.' In one video, the blonde-haired blue-eyed actress, wearing an all-denim getup, looks at the camera and says: 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour.' She adds: 'My jeans are blue.' With a pun on the word 'genes,' the narrator then says: 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.' Left-leaning critics of the American Eagle ad campaign have accused the company of spreading 'racist' and 'Nazi propaganda.' Some have argued that it pushes eugenic ideals with its wordplay on 'jeans' and 'genes.' Critics have argued that the two phrases harken back to the debunked racist theory pushed by the Nazis that the human race can be improved via selective breeding. 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color,' Sweeney says in one of the ads. 'My jeans are blue,' she adds, before a narrator says, 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.' American Eagle has defended the ad campaign. It 'is and always was about the jeans,' the retailer said in a statement Friday. 'We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way,' the statement continued. 'Great jeans look good on everyone.' Sweeney has yet to make a public statement on the matter. Meanwhile, Fox & Friends co-host Lawrence Jones fawned over the Sydney Sweeney video advert which shows her with a gun. 'You love to see it,' said Jones. 'For me, as a single guy, anytime I see a young woman that can shoot, her value goes up. That means I can take her home to Texas … That means when I'm away from the family, she's gonna protect the family. And I think this is beautiful. 'They tried to destroy this woman, and her value is going up. She is just not beautiful, but she can shoot, too? We're done here. It's just beautiful.' The footage of Sweeney at the gun range was shared by Taran Tactical Innovations, an online firearms retailer, on Saturday. Some social media users have claimed that Trump is commenting on the internet debate to latch onto the latest distraction from the Jeffrey Epstein files after the Justice Department issued a memo related to the late sex offender's case last month. But much to the disappointment of many, the memo contained no new revelations. Fox News took notes from Trump's playbook and seemingly used the controversy surrounding the ad to avoid discussing the scandal. Liberal media watchdog Media Matters for America found that Fox News spent more than 85 minutes during at least 20 segments discussing the ad through Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile, Fox discussed the Epstein files for about three minutes even as Trump claimed that Epstein 'stole' one of his accusers, the late Virginia Giuffre, from Mar-a-Lago. Media Matters found that Fox News mentioned Sweeney 62 times, while just mentioning Epstein 14 times. Previously, on Sunday, it emerged that since June of last year, Sweeney has been registered with the Republican Party of Florida, according to public voting records viewed by The Guardian.

The Euphoria star has been registered with the Republican Party of Florida in Monroe County since June 2024, according to public voter records seen by the New York Post. Her right-wing leaning was revealed on Saturday amid a storm of controversy surrounding an advert she shot for American Eagles jeans. Critics have compared the add, which declares 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans", to 'Nazi propaganda'. In one clip, Sydney says that genes are passed down from parents to offspring, 'often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color". She then states: "My jeans are blue." Sydney Sweeney stuns in new American Eagle ad In another ad, the actress approaches a billboard featuring her image and the phrase, 'Sydney Sweeney has great genes,' which she alters by crossing out 'genes' and replacing it with 'jeans.' It's been claimed that the promotion of Sydney's blonde hair and blue eye traits suggests they are superior to alternative genes. The ads sparked a social media frenzy about Western beauty standards and race.
