ASEAN security agendas for September meeting in Melaka
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who will chair the meeting, said among the topics to be discussed are tackling cross-border crimes, intelligence sharing, capacity building and joint operations.
'To tackle cross-border crimes, we will leverage our ASEAN Chairmanship this year as the best platform to exchange information and ideas that can be developed into strategies for effectively addressing security issues,' he said.
He told reporters this after the Security Briefing and Monitoring Programme with the Home Minister and Foreign Delegates here today.
According to Saifuddin, the three-day meeting would be fully utilised at the ASEAN ministerial level to present and discuss ASEAN security issues for the common interest.
'We can see certain things, but there are also some things we can't see, but our neighbours (neighbouring countries) can. These are among the matters that can be presented at the ASEAN meeting,' he said. - Bernama

Another Suspected Criminal Killed In Shootout With Police In Sungai Petani
SUNGAI PETANI, July 5 (Bernama) -- Police have shot dead another man believed to be involved in a series of armed robberies, just a day after two other suspects were killed in a shootout in Jitra. The 34-year-old suspect was fatally shot during a similar shootout with police at 7.50 pm in Bandar Puteri Jaya, according to acting director of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Datuk Fadil Marsus. 'This was a special operation led by Bukit Aman CID in collaboration with several state contingents and all branches of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). 'Today, we encountered an individual believed to be part of a gang involved in a series of armed robberies across several states. Attempts were made to arrest him, but he resisted and a shootout ensued, leading to his death,' he told reporters at the scene. A pistol and several other items were recovered from the suspect, who had more than 30 prior criminal records. Fadil said police believe the suspect was also a key member of a criminal group, comprising over a dozen members, responsible for a string of armed robberies, gangsterism and drug trafficking dating back to 2022, which caused losses estimated at nearly RM6 million. 'Our investigations indicate this suspect was also involved in three recent armed robberies in Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, and Perak,' he added. Fadil emphasised that the police would continue to act aggressively to apprehend individuals involved in violent crimes, especially those involving firearms. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code.

Anwar urges BRICS to emulate Asean and boost intra-member trade
RIO DE JANEIRO: Asean's move to trade in local currencies among its member states is part of efforts to strengthen the financial system and be free of unilateral domination. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this is also one of the steps towards reforming Asean, which had previously focused on boosting trade among member states. "Malaysia, together with Indonesia, Thailand and China, have begun using our own currencies (to trade), even though it makes up only 10 to 20 per cent of total trade. "This signals change as we cannot continue to complain without carrying out our own plans," he said at the BRICS Economic Forum, held in conjunction with the BRICS Summmit here. Also present were Brazil president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, vice-president of Brazil Geraldo Alckim, and Brazilian National Confederation of Industry (CNI) president Ricardo Alban. Anwar said trade among BRICS members should be intensified to the same level as Asean's. "Right now, we must increase intra-BRICS trade. We have a huge potential for progress, and only with that strength can we negotiate safely and fairly with other partners." Malaysia's participation in the summit is due to its status as a BRICS partner country, and as the 2025 Asean chair. Malaysia became a BRICS partner country on Jan 1 this year.

PM Anwar calls on BRICS to boost intra-trade, champion fair and just global order
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for an increase in intra-BRICS trade and for the grouping to emerge as a strong and principled force, grounded in equity, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to shaping a more balanced and just international order. Lamenting unilateral tariff measures and protectionist policies, Anwar expressed confidence that BRICS, which today accounts for nearly 40 per cent of the global economy, holds vast potential to boost trade within the informal grouping. "With that collective strength, we can engage the world safely, fairly, and justly, negotiating on equal terms with all partners in the multilateral system," he said. He further emphasised the need for reform of key international institutions. "We must demand the transformation of global governance structures, from the United Nations to the World Trade Organisation, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank towards a more democratic and just multilateral order," he said at the BRICS Business Forum entitled: 'Bridging Continents, Building Future: A Shared Agenda for Sustainable Progress' in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil today. Also present were President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Vice President of Brazil Geraldo Alckmin and President of the Brazilian Confederation of National Industry (CNI) Ricardo Alban. Anwar firmly asserted that developing countries should no longer be regarded as peripheral players in the global system. "We are not merely heirs of post-colonial history. We have now risen as a dignified force with our strengths in technology, trade, leadership, and the moral voice of the world," he said. "BRICS today goes beyond political rhetoric. It is a coalition of political, economic, and civil society forces moving in tandem to demand a more just and equitable global system." The uniqueness of BRICS is highlighted by the active participation of the private sector, women, youth, and civil society, making this struggle not merely an elite discourse but an inclusive and resilient collective movement, said Anwar, who is also the finance minister. As the Chair of ASEAN, Malaysia shares this aspiration, he added. The Malaysian prime minister said BRICS and ASEAN members must continue to strengthen strategic cooperation, including enhancing cross-regional trade and investment for the shared benefit of developing countries. BRICS 2025 is not merely a continuation of past efforts but a moment of renewed awakening. With visionary political leadership, a progressive private sector, and a strengthening Global South solidarity, "we have a real opportunity to reshape the global landscape," he added. Anwar also voiced his support for Lula, commending him as one of the few courageous global leaders today to speak on behalf of those who have been left unheard. The BRICS group - which serves as a political and diplomatic coordination forum for countries of the Global South with collaboration across diverse sectors - was initially established by Brazil, Russia, India and China. It later expanded with the inclusion of South Africa in 2011, followed by Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2023, and Indonesia in 2024. Malaysia, as well as Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Thailand, Vietnam, Uganda, and Uzbekistan, were accepted as BRICS partner countries. Anwar arrived earlier today to attend the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit hosted by Brazil at the invitation of Lula. He is being accompanied by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz; Minister of Transport Anthony Loke; Miri member of parliament Chiew Choon Man; and Paya Besar member of parliament Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah.
