Iloski Scores Club-Record 4 Goals, San Diego Beats Vancouver, Moves Past 'Caps Atop Conference
Milan Iloski scored a club-record four goals, Anders Dreyer had three assists, and San Diego FC beat Vancouver 5–2 on Wednesday night to move past the Whitecaps into first in the Western Conference.
Iloski is the third player this season (Vancouver's Brian White and Nashville's Sam Surridge) and the 20th in MLS history to score at least four goals in a game. San Diego (11–5–3) has won seven of nine with just one loss in that span and has 36 points – four behind Philadelphia – the points leaders in all of MLS – and one ahead of Vancouver. Vancouver (10–3–5) has lost back-to-back games following an 11-game unbeaten streak. Tomás Ángel scored for San Diego in the 90th minute.
Iloski's shot from the edge of the box was parried by goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka, but Iloski calmly tapped in the one-touch putback from the left side of the area that slipped inside the near post in the 35th minute and then scored on the counter-attack in the 37th minute to make it 2–0. Édier Ocampo scored his first career goal in MLS in the 43rd minute, a first-touch shot off a misplayed ball by San Diego defender Oscar Verhoeven. Dreyer played an arcing ball-in from the right side to the center of the area where Iloski scored on a diving header in the 44th minute for the first hat trick in club history and then ran onto a ball played ahead by Dreyer and beat Takaoka one on one to make it 4–1 in the 47th minute. Mathias Laborda cut Vancouver's deficit to 4–2 in the 66th minute, and Antoine Coupland, who made his MLS debut when he subbed on in the 87th minute, capped the scoring in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña out of lineup a day after getting hit in the ribs by a pitch
Houston shortstop Jeremy Peña was not in the lineup Saturday but was feeling better after leaving the Astros' victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday night in the fifth inning because of rib soreness, manager Joe Espada said. Peña was hit in the ribs by Cade Horton's pitch during the second inning of the Astros' 7–4 win. He remained in the game for three innings until being removed for a pinch hitter. Imaging done Friday did not reveal a fracture. 'He is getting treatment right now. He's gonna move around, probably hit off the tee,' Espada said. 'I'm going to do everything I can to keep him away from today's game just to give him a full off day, but he's actually feeling pretty good.' Peña played in the Astros' first 82 games of the season. The 2022 ALCS and World Series MVP is enjoying the best year of his career, batting .322 with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs while serving as the leadoff hitter. His .867 OPS is 166 points higher than the number he posted last season.

Rooker, Kurtz Homer Off Schmidt To Back Sears, Lead Athletics Over Yankees 7-0
Brent Rooker ended Clarke Schmidt's scoreless streak at 28 1/3 innings with a solo homer in the fourth inning. Nick Kurtz added a three-run drive in the sixth, and the Athletics beat the New York Yankees 7–0 Saturday. Former Yankee JP Sears (6–7) allowed two hits over 5 2/3 innings for the A's, who had lost five of six and entered with a major league-worst 11–31 record since May 13. Jack Perkins, a 25-year-old right-hander who debuted last weekend, finished the three-hitter for his first big league save and extended his scoreless streak to 6 1/3 innings. New York was shut out for the sixth time, two shy of its 2024 total. Schmidt (4–4) had an extra day of rest after he threw a career-high 103 pitches over seven no-hit innings against Baltimore on June 21. He gave up four runs and four hits in six innings. Rooker's fourth-inning homer on a hanging slider ended the longest scoreless streak by a Yankees starter since Don Larsen's 29 innings over 1957–58 and the longest within a season since Allie Reynolds's 30 in 1951, according to STATS. Kurtz's homer on a cutter followed a pair of four-pitch walks and landed behind the right field short porch. Yankees pitchers walked five, and four of those runners scored. Yankees reliever Ian Hamilton appeared to take issue with Jacob Wilson after an inning-ending comebacker in the seventh, staring at the rookie. The reason was not clear. Paul Goldschmidt's sixth-inning single ended an 0-for-20 slide. Aaron Judge twice flied to the warning track with men on base. Catcher Austin Wells picked up Max Muncy's popped bunt in the eighth rather than letting the ball roll foul, leading to a three-run inning that included Tyler Soderstrom's sacrifice fly and Austin Wynn's RBI single. Kurtz has 12 homers this season, including 11 in the rookie's past 22 games. Yankees RHP Marcus Stroman (0–1, 11.57) makes his first start since April 11 in Sunday's series finale after being sidelined by left knee inflammation. Former Yankee RHP Luis Severino (2–8, 4.83) starts for the A's.

Zach McKinstry and Riley Greene both hit homers in Tigers' 10-5 win over the Twins
Zach McKinstry had three hits, including one of Detroit's four home runs, and the Tigers went on to beat the Twins 10–5 on Saturday afternoon. Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, and Gleyber Torres also homered for the Tigers. Casey Mize (8–2) gave up two runs on five hits and one walk in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five as he improved to 5–0 with a 2.00 ERA in six starts at home this season. Bailey Ober (4–6) took the loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits, including all four home runs. He walked one and struck out five. The Tigers took a 1–0 lead in the second when Spencer Torkelson doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly. After Minnesota went ahead 2–1 on Buxton's two-run homer in the third, Detroit tied the game in the bottom of the inning on Carpenter's homer. Colt Keith made it 3–2 in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, and Torres followed with a two-run homer. Greene led off the fifth with Detroit's third home run to move the lead to 6–2, and McKinstry's lead-off homer in the sixth made it a five-run game. Carlos Correa hit a two-run homer in the eighth, but Wenceel Pérez hit a two-run double in the bottom of the inning. Key moment: The Twins nearly took the lead in the second inning, but Carpenter leaped to keep a fly ball from Ryan Jeffers from clearing the left field fence. Key stat: Buxton homered and stole a base in the same game for the 15th time, tying Gary Gaetti for third place on the Twins' career list. Up next: The teams finish the three-game series in the first Sunday night game at Comerica Park since 2017. Twins RHP Chris Paddock (3–6, 4.64) faces Tigers ace LHP Tarik Skubal (9–2, 2.29), who is 9–0 in his last 14 starts.
