NMC Seeks Consultancy Help For 3 Yrs to Overhaul 24x7 Water Supply Monitoring
Nagpur: After a gap of nearly six years, Nagpur Environmental Services Limited (NESL) has floated an e-tender seeking consultancy services for managing the operation and maintenance (O&M) of the public-private partnership (PPP) agreement of the city's ambitious 24x7 water supply project. The move comes as the civic body finds it increasingly difficult to monitor the massive infrastructure project with limited in-house manpower. The estimated cost of the consultancy tender is pegged at Rs2.59 crore, with an earnest money deposit (EMD) of Rs1.5 lakh to be submitted in the name of the executive engineer (water works). According to the tender document, the services will be sought for a period of three years. The last date for submitting the online tender is August 19, 2025, and the technical bid will be opened on August 20 at 5pm. An NESL official said that earlier, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) appointed a Central Project Management Consultant (CPMC) until 2019 after it privatised the city's water supply by roping in Orange City Water Limited. "Currently, we have six delegates, one executive engineer, and a superintending engineer handling the entire project. Except for two delegates who are monitoring Dharampeth and Ashi Nagar zones, the remaining four are already burdened with supervising water supply in two zones each," said a senior NESL official. Over the past few months, NMC and OCWL have intensified efforts to reduce Non-Revenue Water (NRW) — the portion of water supplied that does not generate revenue due to theft, leakages, or unmetered consumption. Out of the total 740 million litres per day (MLD) water supply in Nagpur, NRW still stands at an alarming 40%. To combat this, over 5,000 illegal water connections were disconnected in the last two months, and major leakages across the network are being plugged. Despite these efforts, concerns over poor water pressure and delays in rolling out 24x7 supply to all areas persist. Both chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union minister Nitin Gadkari raised strong objections regarding the current state of the project. Despite passage of 14 years after entrusting OCWL for implementing 24x7 water supply scheme, many parts of the city are still not receiving round the clock water supply. With the appointment of a professional consultancy agency, NESL hopes to streamline the O&M activities, ensure better oversight of OCWL's work, and accelerate the city's transition to a truly 24x7 water supply system.

27 NH projects on in Karnataka with outlay of Rs 31,749 crore
UDUPI : A total of 27 National Highway (NH) projects are presently underway across Karnataka, with a cumulative sanctioned expenditure of Rs 31,749 crore. This information was disclosed in a written response by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to an unstarred question asked by Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary in the Lok Sabha on July 31. Seeking elucidation on status of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects in Karnataka, Poojary inquired about specifics of projects under consideration, ongoing initiatives, their timelines, sanctioned amounts, and funds expended thus far. In response, the ministry said feasibility studies and detailed project reports (DPRs) serve as the foundation for investment decisions, which are harmonised with PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. The reply further listed 27 major NHAI projects in Karnataka, covering a total length of 1,151 km of which 537 km have been completed so far. The total expenditure incurred stands at Rs 14,455 crore. A key project, six-laning work on the Nelamangala-Tumakuru section (NH 48), sanctioned at Rs 2,032 crore has seen just 10.3 km completed out of 44.73 km. Another project that is plodding along is the construction of a six-lane new bridge across the Phalguni River near Kulur (NH 66), Mangaluru, where work hasn't progressed much despite Rs 27 crore already having been spent on foundation works. This bridge has a revised deadline of December 31, 2025.
