The day saw visits by political leaders from across the spectrum, each making their own pitch to the influential Mutharaiyar community in central Tamil Nadu. The emperor is hailed by the Mutharaiyars, who are listed under the Most Backward Classes, as their cultural icon.
Earlier in the day, ministers K.N. Nehru, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Siva V. Meyyanathan, and MLAs Stalin Kumar, M. Palaniyandi, and S. Kathiravan also garlanded Mutharaiyar's statue. Over 60 Sri Lankan Tamils in Namakkal rehabilitation camp told to leave or renew visas
Over 60 people staying in a rehabilitation camp for Sri Lankan Tamils in Namakkal district have found themselves in a fix. All these individuals, who arrived in India many years ago from Sri Lanka, invariably on tourist visas, came to the camp because their relatives were already staying there. They have been found to be overstaying in the country. Last week, the police in Paramathi Velur issued them written notices, directing them to leave the country within 10 days, as they have neither renewed their visas nor returned to Sri Lanka. C. Vinothan is one of the individuals who has received the notice. He concedes that he left the camp in 2010 after obtaining an exit permit and returned five years later. After the civil war in Sri Lanka ended in May 2009, he visited the island nation the following year to get a first-hand account of the living conditions in Kilinochchi, in the Northern Province, from where he and his family had fled to Tamil Nadu in the 1990s as refugees. However, in 2015, he returned to the camp. 'After all, all my family members are here. How can I remain without them?' Mr. Vinothan asks, adding that the remaining 61 individuals in the camp are in similar circumstances. A senior government official, handling the subject of refugees, points out that once a refugee takes an exit permit and leaves a camp, he or she cannot go back there as the refugee. According to Mr. Vinothan, this is not the first time that he and the others have been told to leave the place. 'In May, the message was conveyed to us orally. But, there was no follow-up,' he says, adding that 'this time, the authorities seem to be serious.' Pointing out that the issue of notices to the 'residents' of the Namakkal camp has been done as a sequel to the direction of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs given to the States, in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, to identify all the foreigners who are overstaying illegally in the country and take action against them, the official says: 'I have gone through the records of each and every person. Their visas had expired many years ago.' The official adds that 'all what we want is that these persons should apply for long-term visas and stay here lawfully.'

TVK chief Vijay blames DMK for PM Modi's ‘statues for Chola icons' pitch
He accused the DMK of forgetting its duty to celebrate the legacy of the Chola empire. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced grand statues for Chola kings Rajaraja and Rajendra on Sunday, the actor-politician avoided directly targeting the prime minister and instead hit out at the BJP and the union government led by it. Chennai, Jul 28 (PTI) Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam President Vijay on Monday said the BJP-led Centre would not have been able to seek to appropriate Cholas had the ruling DMK given due respect in full to the mighty emperors. In a statement, he alleged the Dravidian party 'mortgaged' Tamil Nadu by seeking sanctuary with the Union BJP government, and now the DMK government has also mortgaged the pride of the Tamils. Had the ruling DMK, in the past, accorded due respect in full to the Chola emperors, the BJP regime, which is against Tamils, would not have been able to 'take up the matter of the pride of the Tamils, the Cholas.' The TVK chief alleged that the union government, by hiding the Keeladi excavation findings attempted to conceal Tamil civilisation and history. Now, the PM has spoken about the pride of the Cholas and is it not an out-and-out deceitful drama? Vijay accused the DMK of having indirect ties with the BJP and alleged that the Dravidian and Saffron parties were enacting a political drama and both could only be termed as politically guile. Hence, the Tamil Nadu people will not accept the 'political mileage drama,' enacted together by the BJP and DMK albeit indirectly. Vijay said the people would give a fitting reply to both the parties for their deceitful politics in the 2026 Assembly election. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced the construction of grand statues of iconic Chola emperors, Rajaraja Chola and his son, Rajendra Chola I, in Tamil Nadu. Addressing the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival in Gangaikonda Cholapuram to mark and honour the birth anniversary of Rajendra Chola-I, the prime minister said these statues will serve as modern pillars of India's historical consciousness. DMK has failed in its duty and surrendered to the BJP: Vijay
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay on Monday said if the ruling DMK had ensured appropriate honour for the Chola kings, the BJP-led Central government, which was acting against the interest of Tamils, would not have taken it up now. In a statement, he said the Centre had sidelined Tamil Nadu, but now Prime Minister Narendra Modi was announcing statues for Chola kings and 'taking lessons' from the Chola dynasty. The DMK has failed in its duty and surrendered to the BJP and has pledged the pride of Tamils to the national party, he added. Mr. Vijay alleged that the BJP-led Centre, which was trying to bury history by hiding the Keeladi findings, was now talking about the Cholas, which is a mere act and the DMK had fallen for it. According to him, the DMK and the BJP are on the same team behind closed doors, and they should be labelled as 'deceivers'. He added that the people would not fall prey to what he called 'a drama for political mileage'.
