Controversial Automated Ball-Strike system is a 'good addition,' but needs development, MLB All-Star says
ATLANTA – Minor league baseball players have had the opportunity to get familiar with the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) system. Major league players were introduced to it in spring training, but once the regular season began, home plate ruled on whether a pitch fell within the strike zone. The challenge system, which has sparked some controversy in the baseball world, will make its primetime debut at Tuesday's MLB All-Star Game. The reaction in the days since the MLB confirmed the system would be utilized has been mixed. Those who hold baseball's traditions dear have expressed frustration or even outrage. Cleveland Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan, however, took a more measured approach. "I think it's a cool addition," Kwan told Fox News Digital on Monday in Atlanta, the host city for this year's Midsummer Classic. "I think (we) need some more experience with it. We only got to do it in spring training. It's definitely some spring training when you're in the (batters) box with it, but I think overall it's a good addition." During the All-Star game, the National League team and the American League club will each be allowed two challenges. If a challenge is used and upheld, the team will be able to retain it. A batter, pitcher or catcher can challenge a ball-strikes call. However, if a player does want to issue a challenge, time is of the essence. Any challenge has to be presented immediately after a strike or a ball is called. Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes was among the high-profile players who chimed in on the ABS system. "Pitchers think everything is a strike," the Pirates ace told reporters in Atlanta on Monday. "Then you go back and look at it, and it's two, three balls off. So we should not be the ones that are challenging it. I really do like the human element of the game. I think this is one of those things that you kind of think umpires are great until they're not." Skenes appeared to take a nonchalant position on the matter, saying he "could kind of care less, either way, to be honest." The ABS system is not expected to be involved in regular season games once the All-Star break ends. The MLB has not revealed any potential timetable for using the system in regular or postseason games, but testing it in the All-Star game appears to be a step toward it eventually becoming a part of the game. Ja'Marr Chase achieved the receiving triple crown. Justin Jefferson has rewritten receiving records in his first five seasons. So which superstar pass-catcher is the best wide receiver in the NFL? It's a tie, according to a panel of eight AP Pro Football Writers who ranked the top five players at the position, basing selections on current status entering the 2025 season. First-place votes were worth 10 points. Second- through fifth-place votes were worth 5, 3, 2 and 1 points. Chase and Jefferson each received four first-place votes and four seconds. Amon-Ra St. Brown finished third, CeeDee Lamb was fourth and AJ Brown placed fifth. Tyreek Hill, Garrett Wilson, Terry McLaurin and Mike Evans also received votes. 1 (tie). JA'MARR CHASE, Cincinnati Bengals Chase led the league in receptions (127), yards receiving (1,708) and touchdown catches (17) last season, becoming just the sixth wide receiver in the Super Bowl era to win the receiving triple crown. He was a unanimous All-Pro selection and teamed with Tee Higgins to give quarterback Joe Burrow two dynamic playmakers. 1 (tie). JUSTIN JEFFERSON, Minnesota Vikings Jefferson had 103 catches for 1,533 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, also earning a unanimous All-Pro selection. Jefferson is the first player in NFL history with more than 7,000 receiving yards in just five seasons. He set records for most receptions by any player in their first three NFL seasons and most yards in first three, four and five seasons. 3. AMON-RA ST. BROWN, Detroit Lions Brown has three straight seasons of more than 100 receptions and more than 1,100 yards receiving. He followed up an All-Pro season in 2023 with another one in 2024, finishing with 115 catches for 1,263 yards and 12 TDs. Brown received three third-place votes, one fourth and three fifths. 4. CEEDEE LAMB, Dallas Cowboys A four-time Pro Bowl pick and 2023 All-Pro, Lamb has put up prolific numbers in his first five seasons. Lamb had 101 catches for 1,194 yards and six TDs last year, his third straight surpassing 100/1,100. Lamb holds the Cowboys' single-season records for both receptions (135) and receiving yards (1,749), both set in 2023 when he also set an NFL record with three straight games of 10 receptions and 150 yards receiving. He received two third-place votes and four fourths. 5. A.J. BROWN, Philadelphia Eagles Brown has become one of the league's elite playmakers since joining Philadelphia in 2022. He had 67 catches for 1,079 yards and seven TDs in 13 games last season and played a big role in the offense for the Super Bowl champions. Nick Sirianni rips criticism of Eagles carrying Jalen Hurts, lauds QB's ‘selflessness'
Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni ripped the idea that the team carried quarterback Jalen Hurts to its Super Bowl title in February. 'I think that's bulls—,' Sirianni said, per NBC Sports Philadelphia, at a roundtable interview ahead of training camp. 'I mean, (Hurts) plays the most important position in all of sports. And it's the most ultimate team game there is. And what I admire about him is his selflessness of doing anything we need to do to win.' Advertisement Hurts has received criticism for not ranking among the top signal callers in quarterback ratings, as well as the Eagles' focus on their ground game last season. Philadelphia leaned on star running back Saquon Barkley, who finished with career highs in rushing attempts (345) and rushing yards (2,005) to go along with 13 touchdowns last season. Barkley earned his third Pro Bowl selection and won Offensive Player of the Year. Hurts, 26, logged 2,903 passing yards in the regular season, his lowest total since his 2020 rookie season when he wasn't the regular starter. He threw for 18 touchdowns with five interceptions in 15 regular-season games, but added five touchdowns with 726 passing yards in the Eagles' five playoff games, including their Super Bowl win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Two of Hurts' postseason touchdowns came in the Super Bowl, where he led Philadelphia to a 40-22 win over the reigning champion Chiefs and earned Super Bowl MVP. It marked the Eagles' second trip to the Super Bowl in Hurts' five-year NFL career after Philadelphia lost to the Chiefs 38-35 in February 2023. Sirianni argued that other successful NFL quarterbacks have benefited from being surrounded by great teammates, and he named other Super Bowl-winning duos. 'One of the reasons I love football so much is that it takes everybody to accomplish your goals,' Sirianni said. 'Listen, you name great quarterbacks, you can go ahead and start naming great quarterbacks. I'll tell you their great receivers and their great defense. 'You know?
