How long will Jeanie Buss stay on as Lakers governor? Conflicting reports emerge around potential 5-year reign

Mark Walter will be the new majority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers. But he won't be the team's governor. That job title still belongs to the old owner. It's complicated. Walter and the Buss family are in the process of closing the most expensive team sale in professional sports history, with the Lakers valued at $10 billion. The deal was hailed as a new start for the Lakers after more than four decades under the Buss family, which saw 11 NBA titles but also criticism toward the end. Advertisement However, it's been established that while Walter, who has seen great success owning the Los Angeles Dodgers, will be the new owner, Jeanie Buss will remain in her role as team governor for "the foreseeable future." Wednesday saw a pair of outlets try to provide some clarity on how long that future might be. The Athletic's Sam Amick reported in the morning that the Buss family's agreement with Walter stipulates that Jeanie remain governor for at least five years, so basically until the 2030s. Not long after, Front Office Sport's Ben Horney reported the opposite: Jeanie will remain governor for five years at most. The plot thickened later in the day when Front Office Sports updated its article to say that two other sources told them what The Athletic reported, while keeping in its initial source saying "at most." It makes for a confusing paragraph: Two sources familiar with the matter tell Front Office Sports the agreement—which carries a jaw-dropping $10 billion valuation—will allow Buss to remain as team governor for 'at least' five years. Sam Amick of The Athletic also reported that earlier Wednesday. Another source familiar with the matter, however, tells FOS that Buss will only be able to stay on for 'at most' five years. So when can Lakers fan expect to have a new governor in the building? It remains unclear, though the majority of sources are clearly saying it's at least five years. Jeanie Buss will remain Lakers governor for an amount of time to be confirmed later. (Photo by Robin) (Robin L Marshall via Getty Images) However long Jeanie is calling the shots for the Lakers, the team's fans (and haters) can probably expect a team a little more aggressive with its financial might. While teams like the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers have rung up enormous luxury tax bills over the past decade, the Buss family has been a bit more conservative, running their team more in line with a family business. Advertisement Keeping Jeanie at least maintains stability during a transition, and this deal isn't unprecedented. The Boston Celtics are currently doing something similar, with former majority owner Wyc Grousbeck staying on as governor once he sells the team for $6.05 billion. Mark Cuban also stayed on after selling the Dallas Mavericks, but was phased out enough that he was as shocked as everyone by a certain trade with the Lakers.

X CEO Linda Yaccarino Resigns After 2 Years Leading Elon Musk's Platform

X CEO Linda Yaccarino on Wednesday announced she is stepping down after leading the platform owned by Elon Musk for a little more than two years. 'I'm immensely grateful to him for entrusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App,' Yaccarino posted on X. 'I'm incredibly proud of the X team – the historic business turn around we have accomplished together has been nothing short of remarkable.' More from TheWrap X CEO Linda Yaccarino Resigns After 2 Years Leading Elon Musk's Platform Elon Musk Blames X's Antisemitic AI Meltdown on Grok Being 'Too Eager to Please' Apple COO Jeff Williams to Exit After 27 Years Latest Trump-Musk Battle Spurs $70 Billion Stock Decline for Tesla After two incredible years, I've decided to step down as CEO of 𝕏. When @elonmusk and I first spoke of his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime to carry out the extraordinary mission of this company. I'm immensely grateful to him for entrusting me… — Linda Yaccarino (@lindayaX) July 9, 2025 Her exit comes a day after Grok, X's artificial intelligence model, went haywire and started posting antisemitic and pro-Hitler responses. A number of X users responded to her post on Wednesday, asking if the Grok incident played a role in her leaving the company. Yaccarino was named the chief executive of X in June 2023, less than a year after Musk bought the platform formerly known as Twitter. She joined X after leaving NBCUniversal, where she was the chairman of global advertising and partnerships, and her move to Musk's platform shocked many in the industry. Yaccarino, soon after joining the company, said she was committed to what Musk called his 'Freedom of speech, not freedom of reach' approach, where the platform was less focused on censoring and kicking off users than under its previous leadership. 'X is enabling an information independence that's uncomfortable for some people,' Yaccarino said in 2023. 'We're a platform that allows people to make their own decisions.' She said that perspective put X at the 'unique and amazing intersection of Free Speech and Main Street' and would make it more appealing to advertisers. After a rocky few years, that bet appeared to pay off, with advertisers like Disney and Apple returning to the platform following controversial comments from Musk. Trimming costs and headcount also helped X bounce back to a $44 billion valuation, the same price Musk paid for it, before it was acquired by Musk's AI platform in March. Critics, meanwhile, have said X has become more toxic than ever under its more relaxed approach to censorship. Many users ditched X after the 2024 election and headed to Bluesky, which some left-leaning users dubbed 'Blue Heaven,' in protest of Musk and his support for President Trump. 'Thank you for your contributions,' Musk posted in response to Yaccarino, about 40 minutes after she announced her exit. His curt five word reply stood in contrast to the 213 word farewell Yaccarino sent out. Reps for X did not immediately respond to TheWrap's request for comment on who will run the company following Yaccarino's exit. Nvidia's AI-powered rise to a $4 trillion market cap, in 3 charts

Nvidia's surge has stunned investors since ChatGPT ignited the AI boom at the end of 2022. On Wednesday, the chipmaker became the first $4 trillion company. These three charts illustrate Nvidia's rise to stock-market dominance. Nvidia's rise since the debut of ChatGPT in November 2022 has been stunning. Shares of the chipmaker—known mostly for gaming hardware prior to the AI boom—embarked on a dizzying rally since AI burst into public consciousness and sparked a frenzy for the tech among Wall Street investors. The stock has risen more than eightfold over that timeframe, and on Wednesday, the company became the first ever to hit a $4 trillion market capitalization. Here are three charts that document the chipmaker's dominance over the last three years. Nvidia has beaten the broader market in recent years, and it's not even close. Shares of the chipmaker are up 871% since November 30, 2022, the day ChatGPT made its debut. The benchmark index, by comparison, is up 54% over that timeframe. Nvidia's gains also far outstrip those of its fellow US chipmakers. The company's GPUs have become the premier piece of hardware powering large language models, and all of the biggest "hyperscalers"—companies with big AI ambitions like Meta and Microsoft—are its top customers. Meanwhile, semiconductor peers Advanced Micro Devices and Intel have been largely left behind in the AI race. While Nvidia is up almost 900% since November 2022, AMD is up 77%, and Intel is down almost 25% since then. Nvidia's revenue exploded in the years after OpenAI made ChatGPT available to the public. Revenue has climbed steadily higher every quarter for the last two years, and the growth has been heavily concentrated in its data center unit. The company pulled in $44.1 billion in revenue in the first quarter of this year, up 69% compared to the same quarter of 2024. Of that amount, $39.1 billion came from its data center business, which saw revenue grow 73% year-over-year.
