Iran prepares "unprecedented" response to US strikes on nuclear sites
The sources told Shafaq News that Tehran's imminent response will target critical infrastructure sites of strategic importance, mirroring the significance of the Iranian nuclear facilities recently struck.
Among the weapons Iran is poised to deploy are advanced Kheibar and Sejjil ballistic missiles, alongside other capabilities being introduced into the battlefield for the first time, the sources added.
Tehran is reportedly awaiting a United Nations Security Council resolution affirming its right to self-defense and peaceful nuclear energy. The proposed resolution also calls for an immediate cessation of the escalating exchange of strikes with Israel. However, sources noted that the United States may veto the resolution, which is expected to be put to a vote on Monday.
One senior diplomat suggested that a new dialogue channel between Washington and Tehran—possibly mediated by Russia or Oman—could emerge if both sides agree to suspend military operations. 'The backchannel is contingent on halting the strikes,' the source said.
The report follows the abrupt collapse of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States, which began on April 12. Talks, led by US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, had reached their fifth round, with modest signs of progress despite firm positions on uranium enrichment.
A sixth round was scheduled but was canceled after Israel launched a surprise air assault on Iran on June 13 under the codename Operation Rising Lion. That operation, aimed at eliminating the Iranian nuclear threat, reportedly killed several senior Iranian military commanders and nuclear scientists.
Iran responded to the Israeli strike the same night with missile attacks on Tel Aviv, initiating a continuing pattern of mutual bombardments that has persisted for over a week.
The diplomatic sources emphasized that the coming hours are critical. 'What Iran does next could define the trajectory of the entire Middle East.'

Kurdistan accuses Baghdad of systematic discrimination
Shafaq News – Erbil A senior official in the Kurdish government (KRG) accused the federal government in Baghdad on Thursday of systematically stripping the Region's citizens of their basic rights over the past three years, describing the ongoing salary crisis as only one aspect of broader political and economic injustices. In a statement, the official said it was 'regrettable' that public sector salaries in Kurdistan had become a tool of political pressure. He characterized Baghdad's approach as a deliberate strategy of impoverishment and a flagrant violation of the Iraqi constitution, aimed at undermining the dignity of Kurdish citizens and deepening national divisions. The official cited figures to illustrate the shortfall in financial transfers. In 2023, the federal government sent only 4.698T IQD (about $3.5B) to the Region—representing just 28.5% of what was owed. In 2024, that figure rose to 10.026T IQD (about $7.6B), covering 47.9% of entitlements. So far in 2025, only 3.829T IQD (about $3B) have been received, which accounts for just 18.3% of the Region's 20.910T IQD (about $15.9B) entitlement. According to the KRG, no less than one trillion dinars should be transferred each month. However, the salary issue is only one part of what the official described as a larger pattern of federal discrimination. Since 2014, the KRG has been barred from hiring new public employees, while Baghdad added more than a million to the federal payroll in a single year. Despite multiple agreements to resume oil exports from the Kurdistan Region, Baghdad has continued to obstruct shipments, while allowing illegal oil flows to proceed elsewhere in the country. The Region's border crossings and internal revenues have also been targeted, with trade movements restricted and local economies undermined. Kurdistan-produced goods, both agricultural and industrial, are being blocked from export, and subject to customs tariffs the KRG deems illegal. The official added that the Region is being denied access to medical supplies and equipment, even though more than 40% of patients in its hospitals come from outside Kurdistan. Furthermore, Baghdad has reportedly excluded the Region from international loans and humanitarian assistance. Even visits by UN agencies and NGOs have been restricted. Salaries and support for the Kurdish Peshmerga forces—recognized as part of Iraq's national defense—have been cut. Aid for refugees and displaced persons within Kurdistan has also been blocked, as has access to assistance from global organizations. The official also noted discrimination in agricultural support policies, pointing to Baghdad's restrictions on wheat purchases from Kurdish farmers, even as it subsidizes growers elsewhere and imports wheat from abroad at significant cost. He concluded by calling for a 'brave national stance' to correct what he described as a dangerous imbalance. 'All Iraqis must respect the constitution and recognize the Kurdistan Region's rights as a federal entity,' he said. 'Kurdistanis must not be treated as second-class citizens. Weakening the Region does not strengthen Iraq—it weakens the entire country.'

Explosions heard near Erbil and Kirkuk airports
Shafaq News – Erbil/Kirkuk On Thursday, two explosions were heard near Erbil International Airport, and a drone crashed in southern Kirkuk, according to a security source. Preliminary information indicates an unidentified object fell near the airport. It remains unclear whether it was a drone or a missile. A security source told Shafaq News that the US base at Erbil Airport intercepted and downed two drones west of the city. The directorate announced in a statement a booby-trapped drone was shot down, without causing any human or material damage. In a separate incident, a security source in Kirkuk told Shafaq News that a drone crashed on Airport Street near Badr neighborhood in the southern part of the city. Security forces were dispatched to the site to investigate. Additionally, Spokesperson for Kirkuk International Airport Hardi Al-Salihi confirmed to Shafaq News, 'There have been no attacks on either the civilian or military sections of the airport,' adding that operations are continuing normally without disruption to scheduled flights. The Head of the Turkmen Parliamentary Bloc, Arshad Al-Salihi, told Shafaq News that the ongoing drone and Katyusha rocket attacks on Kirkuk's civil and military airport signal a serious warning about the scale of the security breach in the city. 'What's even more alarming is that no one knows where these drones are being launched from, nor why they are not being detected despite the presence of radars at the military airport,' he added. Al-Salihi also called on urgent and transparent investigation by the relevant authorities to identify the sources of the threat and hold those responsible accountable. Earlier, an unidentified drone carrying two missiles crashed in an open area near the town of Kokez in Diyala.
