Ajit Agarkar 'under pressure', chief selector asked to take 'bold decisions': 'Jadeja not frontline spinner'

Hindustan Times7 hours ago

Following India's defeat by five wickets in the Leeds Test against England, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar has been asked to take 'bold decisions' as the pressure is truly on him. Shubman Gill and co let the hosts chase down 371 in the final innings. Ravindra Jadeja had a lot to play with as he had rough created in the left-handed batter's arc. However, he was unable to utilise it throughout the final day of the Test. Ajit Agarkar has been urged to take 'bold calls' after Ravindra Jadeja's performance left much to be desired in the Leeds Test. (AFP)
Jadeja just came into his own in the final session as he troubled England captain Ben Stokes, eventually dismissing him. However, opener Ben Duckett kept reverse sweeping the left-arm spinner, and Jadeja had no answers to stop the onslaught.
In the entire Headingley Test, Jadeja bowled 47 overs, conceding 172 runs. He took just one wicket in the contest. India lacked the bite from a frontline spinner on the final day, especially when Jasprit Bumrah had a rare bad day, failing to take a single wicket.
Chappell reckons India need to stop their obsession with playing bowlers who can bat a little bit. In his opinion, the visitors need to start trusting specialists to do their job.

'Jadeja is not a front-line spinner in English conditions. If his batting is considered good enough, he can be a support spinner; otherwise a rethink is necessary. If India are to reverse their fortunes in this series then a better balanced team is required,' Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNCricinfo. 'Selectors under pressure'
Chappell also said that the team management should stop selecting batters who can bowl just to have them as an 'insurance' against top-order collapses.
In the first Test, India went in with Shardul Thakur but the bowling all-rounder dished out just 16 overs. In the first innings, he bowled just six overs while in the second, he got only 10 despite dismissing Ben Duckett and Harry Brook in the same over.
'I don't agree that an extra batter who bowls should be selected as insurance against top-order collapses. The top six must be trusted to deliver the runs and that the best combination to secure the requisite 20 wickets is available to the captain,' wrote Chappell.
'The selectors are the ones under pressure now. If batters and bowlers have to be prepared to take risks to score runs and take wickets, they too have to have the courage to take bold decisions,' he added.
India will now take on England in the second Test, beginning Wednesday, July at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

World Super Kabaddi League kicks off new chapter for Kabaddi

New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): World Super Kabaddi League (WSKL) and the Uttar Pradesh Kabaddi League (UPKL) announced the launch of the inaugural edition of WSKL - a groundbreaking step towards making Kabaddi a truly global sport. With the active engagement of nearly 30 countries and formal confirmation from 20 national federations, the inaugural season is tentatively scheduled for February-March 2026 and will be hosted in Dubai, a strategic location chosen to maximise international exposure and fan accessibility. Following the success of UPKL, under the banner 'Apna Bharat, Apna Khel', which focused on nurturing talent within India, WSKL represents a bold new chapter. Unlike UPKL, which was largely India-centric, WSKL has been conceptualised as an international platform with a singular mission: to globalise Kabaddi and pave the way for its inclusion in the Olympic Games. WSKL is backed by the International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) and holds commercial rights through the South Asian Kabaddi Federation, positioning it as a credible and globally supported league. WSKL will adopt a franchise-based model featuring eight teams in its inaugural season. Setting itself apart from existing leagues, each team will showcase a strong international presence alongside Indian talent, reflecting the league's commitment to building a truly global Kabaddi ecosystem. WSKL is fully owned and operated by SJ Uplift Kabaddi Pvt Ltd and was founded by Sambhav Jain, a passionate advocate for the growth and modernisation of Kabaddi. Speaking about this ambitious new venture, Sambhav Jain, Director and Founder, SJ uplift Kabaddi Pvt Ltd, said as quoted by WSKL press release, 'Kabaddi has always deserved a larger stage, not just for India but for the global sporting community. With WSKL, our goal is to reimagine the sport for a global audience, unlock international talent, and take decisive steps towards Olympic recognition. The success of UPKL gave us the foundation, but WSKL is about creating a Kabaddi league that belongs to the world. We are building this with a vision for the next decade, not just the next season.' The league has committed a total player purse of 48 crore across its eight franchises, underscoring the strong investment appetite for this new sports property. WSKL has already secured interest and participation from prominent Kabaddi nations, including South Korea, Iran, Thailand, Pakistan, Malaysia, Japan, Canada, and the United States, with discussions underway to onboard additional countries. The World Super Kabaddi League is designed not as a seasonal tournament but as an evolving global sports property. SJ Uplift Kabaddi Pvt Ltd is committed to building WSKL as a 12-month, year-round Kabaddi ecosystem, creating opportunities for sustained fan engagement, off-season activities, and long-term player development. With WSKL, SJ Uplift Kabaddi Pvt Ltd is setting a new benchmark for Kabaddi, creating an international movement that aspires to bring the sport to a much larger and more diverse audience. (ANI)

India keeps its cards close to the chest

Watching a nets session ahead of an all-important cricket match is like sitting down to solve a crossword puzzle. There may be what one considers straightforward or direct clues on offer, and there may be the cryptic ones which have multiple layers of meaning. India's first open practice session ahead of the second Test against England on a sweltering morning here at Edgbaston on Monday put those assembled through a similar exercise. Then, in the media briefing that followed, India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate basically declared that every player on the roster was in the reckoning to play. Permutations and combinations Whether the Dutchman and the rest of the Indian think-tank fulfilled the job of an ace crossword-setter who disguises definitions masterfully within clues will be known in due course. But there were enough hints to set off multiple permutations and combinations. In training, Jasprit Bumrah had a long chat with coach Gautam Gambhir and had limited bowling. Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep went all out. Kuldeep Yadav spun a brand-new red cherry with all the vigour in the world and offie Washington Sundar rolled his arm over too. Nitish Kumar Reddy batted along with the top-order and even took catches in the slip cordon. The biggest source of suspense going into the tie, however, is around Bumrah's availability and whether India has the firepower to dismiss the opposition twice without him. The confirmation beforehand that the maverick pacer would play just three of the five Tests is a double-edged sword. While it may lend clarity to India's plans it can also ease the opposition's nerves. With India already 0-1 down in the five-match series after the defeat in Leeds, it has to find ways to win at least one contest without Bumrah to have any hopes of clinching the series. 'We picked the squad on trust, not hope,' declared Gambhir in the aftermath of the Headingley reverse. 'We have some inexperience, but they will get better. For four days [of the first Test], we were in a position [to push for a win]. Even on day five... so we believe that these bowlers will deliver.' Akash, Prasidh and Arshdeep Singh have played seven, four and zero Tests respectively but that doesn't preclude them from producing fine performances. Akash, in fact, bowled really well in his last two Tests against Australia in Brisbane and Melbourne. Prasidh improved through the first outing against England and even received a massive vote of confidence from Gambhir. The weather and the pitch are variables that will affect selections. The summer in England has been brutal but rain is never far away in these parts. ten Doeschate then saying that the strip was quite 'grassy and patchy' and 'dry underneath', only added to the intrigue. 'There is a very strong chance of playing two spinners, but it is about which two we play,' he said. 'It is about juggling the batting depth. All three spinners are bowling well and Washi is batting very nicely. But I am pretty sure two spinners will play in this Test.' That's the closest anyone got to a direct clue on Monday. The solution will be revealed in less than 48 hours.
