
Citi to boost Japan investment banking headcount up to 15%, executive says
Rising interest in cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in Japan has resulted in Citi seeing a 140% rise in its investment banking fees in the country to $92 million as of July 10 compared to the same period last year, Dealogic data shows.
"We are hiring and strengthening our regional investment banking team in a very meaningful way," Jan Metzger, Citi's Asia Pacific head of investment banking, told Reuters.
"We're going to be in the market that's growing phenomenally and we're going to be growing faster than the market," Metzger said. The U.S.-headquartered bank did not disclose specific staff numbers for each market.
Japan's investment banking business, in particular, will "meaningfully grow" due to a shift in corporate governance, a regulatory nudge to corporates to improve market value, and strong supply of advanced hardware technologies, Metzger said.
In Japan, Citi exclusively advised Nippon Steel on its $14.9 billion acquisition of U.S. Steel last month.
"I think off the back of the Nippon Steel deal, our phones are really ringing off the hook with clients that have complicated geopolitical deals to do, both from Japan and elsewhere," Metzger said.
Citi has beefed up its investment banking team in Asia this year by recruiting senior bankers from rivals, including senior managing director Akira Kiyota from Nomura in Japan and former Goldman Sachs veteran Philippe Perzi in Australia.
On Tuesday, Citi reported a 13% rise in global investment banking fees in the second quarter.
Dealmaking in the U.S. and some markets stalled shortly after Trump unleashed hefty tariff hikes earlier this year, which weighed on economic growth. However, Metzger said he is seeing greater uncertainty driving up supply chain deals.
Japan is leading Asia's M&A rebound in 2025 with a record $232 billion worth of deals in the first half, and bankers expect the trend to sustain fuelled by take-private arrangements, outbound investments and private equity activity.
Meanwhile, as volume and number of international deals climb in Australia, global banks now have an edge over local boutiques in a highly competitive market, according to Metzger.
Having a "full banking offering" in the market helps Citi better compete with its advisory-focused competitors in Australia, he said.
Besides deals advisory, another regional focus for the bank is convertible bond issuances, which have leapt over the past year. The bank helped Alibaba (9988.HK), opens new tab raise HK$12 billion ($1.5 billion) via an exchangeable bond offering earlier this month.
Investors have flocked to convertible bonds from Chinese tech companies, viewing them as undervalued assets offering downside protection through the bond component to hedge geopolitical risks, Metzger said.

Trump's Turnberry course in Scotland faces issues ahead of British Open return
Donald Trump 's Turnberry golf course will not host the British Open in the near future, with the R&A's new chief executive, Mark Darbon, stating that logistical challenges, rather than political considerations, are the primary obstacle. Turnberry, widely regarded as one of the most picturesque links courses on the Open rotation, is situated along the Ayrshire coast in Scotland, opposite the iconic Ailsa Craig. It last staged the Open in 2009, prior to Mr Trump's acquisition of the resort. Mr Darbon, who succeeded Martin Slumbers at the R&A this year, clarified that Turnberry has not been removed from the list of potential British Open venues. However, significant transportation and other infrastructure issues must be addressed. "I think we've been extremely clear on our position in respect of Turnberry. We love the golf course but we've got some big logistical challenges there," he explained. "You see the scale of their setup here and we've got some work to do on the road, rail and accommodation infrastructure around Turnberry." Mr Darbon confirmed that the R&A held constructive discussions with Eric Trump and other leaders from Trump Golf a few months ago. "I think they understand clearly where we're coming from. We talked through some of the challenges that we have so we've got a good dialogue with them," he added. This follows previous comments from Mr Slumbers, who indicated the R&A would not return to Turnberry until the focus was solely on golf, rather than the owner. Despite speculation that Donald Trump might seek intervention from the British government to bring the Open back to Turnberry, Mr Darbon stated that the decision rests with the R&A. "We have an ongoing dialogue with the UK government given that we're a major event that creates significant value into the UK economy," he said. "We've spoken to them specifically about Turnberry and I think they've made it clear that the decision around where we take our championship rests with us." He added: "I would find it difficult to predict whether there will be any discussion on The Open if the President is making a visit here." Turnberry has only hosted the British Open four times, notably the 1977 "Duel in the Sun" between Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus. However, the Open has grown considerably, and the existing road infrastructure around Turnberry is limited. Turnberry is not the only Scottish links course currently overlooked by the R&A. Muirfield, located along the Firth of Forth east of Edinburgh, is considered one of the purest links courses, having hosted 15 Opens since 1892, most recently in 2013. Only St Andrews has hosted more Opens. However, Muirfield has not been revisited since 2013 as the R&A prioritises courses capable of accommodating large crowds. While 142,000 spectators attended the last Open at Muirfield, Royal Portrush is expected to draw 278,000 this week, second only to St Andrews in attendance figures. The Open will head to Royal Birkdale next year, followed by St Andrews in 2027, with the 2028 venue yet to be announced. Muirfield has historically never gone more than 11 years between Opens, excluding wartime interruptions. "We love the golf course at Muirfield. We're in a discussion with the venue right now," Mr Darbon confirmed. "There's some things that we need to evolve at Muirfield — the practice ground in particular is a challenge for us with a modern Open and there's some work we need to do with the venue to facilitate some of the infrastructure that we require. But it's a good dialogue and we'd love to be back there in the future." ___

Wall Street CEOs see some tariff impact filtering into customer behavior
NEW YORK, July 16 (Reuters) - Some top executives at Wall Street banks have been showing concern about higher inflation and potential deterioration of the U.S. economy as tariffs take effect, noting there has been more cautious behavior from corporate clients. "We have seen pauses in capex and hiring amongst our client base," Citigroup's Jane Fraser told analysts on Tuesday. "All of that said, the strength of the U.S. economy driven by the American entrepreneur and a healthy consumer has certainly been exceeding expectations of late." The bank expects consumer spending to cool in the second half if a spike in prices occurs. Wells Fargo CEO Charles Scharf said he has met with some commercial banking clients and described how they are navigating the new environment. "Many have found ways to avoid passing the 10% tariffs on to their customers," Scharf said. "At the same time, they are preparing for the downside and are not growing inventories or hiring aggressively and developing contingency plans if the downside scenario occurs", he told analysts. Scharf also expressed concern about financial assets. "We should recognize there is risk to the downside as the markets seem to have priced in successful outcomes." Overall, top executives said they expect the dealmaking pipeline to pick up in the second half of the year, as business owners get more comfortable with the new tariff environment. Most banks reaped gains from an M&A rebound in the second quarter already. "Corporations are looking past tariffs to lead their companies through strategic movements and growth," Morgan Stanley's Chief Financial Officer Sharon Yeshaya said.

UBS Japan appoints former veteran Toriyama as head of global banking
TOKYO, July 16 (Reuters) - Swiss Bank UBS (UBSG.S), opens new tab has re-hired Masazumi Toriyama to head its Japanese unit's global banking division, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters and confirmed by the company on Wednesday. Toriyama, who previously spent 18 years at UBS, will start on August 4, replacing interim head Yasunori Saku, who will become chairman of Global Banking Japan, the memo said. The moves are part of an ongoing expansion targeting a 50% increase in the division's headcount, a UBS spokesperson said. UBS is the latest foreign bank to expand its investment banking offering in Japan as the return of inflation and corporate governance changes has spurred M&A deal-making among Japanese firms.
