Iraq warns against regional war after US hits Iran's nuclear sites
Shafaq News/ On Sunday, Iraq's four presidencies condemned the United States' airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
The media office of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani stated that the PM attended a meeting that included President Abdul Latif Rashid, Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, and Supreme Judicial Council President Faiq Zidan.
The attendees reviewed recent regional developments and the implications of the ongoing conflict. They stressed Iraq's rejection of any breach of its sovereignty or airspace and voiced support for the government in taking necessary measures to protect national airspace, including pursuing legal action through international institutions to prevent further violations.
The four presidencies condemned the attack against Iran, warning that the strike 'represents a serious breach of international laws and norms.'
Expressing concern over the targeting of Iran's nuclear sites, they called the act a dangerous escalation that threatens both regional and international peace.
The meeting also addressed Iraq's political, economic, and social conditions, and discussed efforts to improve public services and citizens' living standards.
They reviewed issues including the funding of salaries for public employees in the Kurdistan Region, the resumption of parliament sessions, the implementation of amendments to the General Amnesty Law, and preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections on November 11.

Ukraine targets Russian Su-34 jets in rare long-range strike
Shafaq News – Kyiv/ Moscow Ukraine struck four Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers at Marinovka airbase in southwestern Russia over the weekend, in one of Kyiv's deepest reported air attacks since the start of the war. The airbase, located near Volgograd and roughly 900 kilometers from Ukrainian-held territory, was targeted in a long-range operation confirmed by Ukraine's armed forces. Kyiv did not specify the weapon system used. Ukraine's air force also reported it intercepted 359 out of 363 drones and six of eight missiles launched during an overnight Russian barrage, underscoring the continuing intensity of aerial combat between the two sides. Military officials in Kyiv claimed Russia has lost over 100,000 personnel since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022, alongside 11,000 tanks and more than 42,500 drones. A separate Russian strike damaged a major power facility in Ukraine's southern Kherson province, triggering blackouts across several towns, according to regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin. Russia's Western Group of Forces also announced that its troops had eliminated more than 210 Ukrainian soldiers in recent operations. The unit's press chief, Ivan Bigma, said air defense systems shot down 14 Ukrainian drones and destroyed multiple armored vehicles. Al-Maliki: Iraq must strengthen its state and security institutions
Shafaq News – Baghdad Nouri al-Maliki, the head of the State of Law Coalition, emphasized the need for Iraq to become a strong state capable of defending its sovereignty, warning that regional conflicts could eventually impact Iraq. In a statement released by his media office to mark the Islamic month of Muharram and the commemoration of Ashura, al-Maliki said that true reform should go beyond political slogans, 'It must involve a strategic framework that tackles weaknesses in state institutions, promotes social justice, improves living standards, provides essential services, and creates employment opportunities. These are legitimate rights of the people—not a favor from anyone or a political bargaining chip.' Al-Maliki also stressed the importance of conducting an urgent review of Iraq's security and military institutions to ensure they are capable of maintaining political, social, and security stability, and of defending the country from external threats. Referring to escalating regional tensions, he pointed out, 'Today, as the region undergoes dangerous transformations, and with the Israeli wars rolling from Gaza to Lebanon, then Syria, and now threatening the Islamic Republic [of Iran], Iraq will not remain immune.' 'Iraq must be a strong state, equipped with all means to defend its sovereignty, people, and sacred sites.' Al-Maliki concluded by noting that while global powers possess all forms of strength, Iraq must aspire to reach a similar level—not for aggression, as in the era of the former Ba'athist regime—but to safeguard its sovereignty, rights, and the higher interests of the Iraqi people.
