'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' debuts first trailer, Paul Giamatti as villain

SAN DIEGO – Finally there is a show for those wishing they would do a cross between 'Star Trek' and 'Harry Potter.'
A 'Star Trek' Universe panel on Saturday, July 26, at the pop-culture festival Comic-Con debuted the first trailer for 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy," a series coming to Paramount+ in 2026 that follows the first class of Starfleet cadets in 120 years. The footage also showcased a little peek at Paul Giamatti's Nus Braka, a part Klingon, part Tellarite villain who has a past connection with one of the cadets.
It's a "time of rebuilding" when the new class of students comes to campus, executive producer Noga Landau said. "The world has to be fixed and a lot of the responsibility of that is on their shoulders."

Executive producer Alex Kurtzman added that the show is meant to reflect modern youngsters who are "inheriting all this division" in the real world. He also teased that the Starfleet Academy campus is a ship, so it can go into space on missions where students can get experience in diplomacy and meeting new species in the field.
Holly Hunter plays Nahla Ake, who's both captain and chancellor, and she enjoyed the dichotomy between the two roles.
"The captain's there to command and analyze in emergency situations and delegate," she said. "The chancellor is there to teach and have empathy. It was a wonderful combination of things that it brought out in me and all of us."

Big Ten players asked which uniforms were the best and their answer isn't surprising

B1G players share their favorite jerseys:🦆 Dogs or cats? Star Trek or Star Wars? These are the type of questions you might hear at a conference media day. The type of questions that are pertinent to this college football season, and in particular, the Big Ten season. The right answers are cats and Star Trek, by the way. At Big Ten media days in Las Vegas, which was a three-day event, players from around the conference were asked a myriad of questions, and the subject of the best uniforms happened to come up. In a recent mash up of answers that were posted on TicTok, the overwhelming winner was the Ducks. Players had to name a team, other than their own, whose uniforms were the best in the Big Ten. While Oregon's uniforms won out, with 13 players saying the Ducks because of the colors and the number of combinations they can throw at you, it's interesting that UCLA received two votes and USC garnered a couple of votes as well. The three relative newcomers to the league had all the votes, and none went to the more traditional schools such as Michigan or Ohio State. Oregon was the first team to start the uniform craze, and while some have tried to duplicate them, the Ducks are still leading the way. Whether it's the traditional green, the highlighter yellow, or the stormtrooper whites, Oregon always looks sharp on the field, and opponents still notice.

‘And Just Like That' star believes he was cut from the show for being ‘woke'

Bobby Lee thinks wokeness is to blame for his exit from 'And Just Like That.' The comedian, 53, spoke to Entertainment Weekly at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend about why he wasn't asked to reprise his role as Jackie Nee, Carrie's (Sarah Jessica Parker) podcast cohost, on the third season of the show. 'Some of the woke elements of the show, they got rid of, and I think I was a part of that,' Lee stated. Advertisement 7 Bobby Lee in 'And Just Like That.' Prepare to Celebrate 60 Years of ‘Star Trek' With Nacelle's Nostalgic Figures

Star Trek turns 60 next year, and the franchise is preparing to celebrate in style, especially with a brand new show on the way in Starfleet Academy. But outside of streaming, you'll be able to celebrate in style with Nacelle's new line of Star Trek action figures, which will dedicate a whole wave to the original series next year—and io9 has your first up-close look at one of them. As previously (and exclusively) revealed by io9 this past Friday, the third wave of Nacelle's Star Trek line is set to release in 2026. While Nacelle made waves announcing its Trek line by eschewing the typical process of making a Captain Picard and Captain Kirk and then calling it a day—with wave one including an eclectic mix of deep-cut characters, from Tuvix, to Weyoun, to Admiral Jellico—wave 3 of the series will buck that trend and go all in on the original Trek as an anniversary celebration. All the main crew and then some will be part of the wave, including Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Chekov, Sulu, Doctor McCoy, Nurse Chapel, Yeoman Rand, and a mystery two-pack being kept under wraps. And, of course, that lineup wouldn't be complete without Enterprise's premiere xenolinguist and communications officer, Nyota Uhura, who you can see below in all her action figure render glory, teased at SDCC during Nacelle's panel, but making its online debut here on io9! As you can see, at least one of Uhura's accessories will be a classic phaser rifle—but you can expect her to come with a few more, based on Nacelle's plans for their other Trek figures. We'll at least need a separate teeny-tiny communication earpiece, or an alternate head of her using it, for sure! Wave 3 of Nacelle's Star Trek line is expected to launch some time in 2026. However, if you're like me and yearn to own a Weyoun action figure, you can preorder wave 1 now, due for release in late 2025. Want more io9 news? Check out when to expect the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, what's next for the DC Universe on film and TV, and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who.
