Nick Saban shares humorous response to coaching return rumor
For the first time since the rumor was shared during SEC media days, former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban has publicly commented on his potential interest in returning to coaching. In a recent television appearance on Fox News' Fox and Friends, Saban was asked in an interview the question as to if he would ever return to the sidelines again. Saban, in response, appeared to shut down speculation on a potential return, while also giving a humorous answer. "I never really ever had a thought about getting back into coaching, until two days ago Mrs. Terry said I had to run the sweeper in the entire downstairs," Saban said. "While running the sweeper, the thought occurred to me," When you were coaching, you had a heck of a lot better job than this. That is only time I considered it." "There is no opportunity that I know of right now, that would enhance me to go back to coaching." Saban also later added. Saban, who announced his retirement back in Jan. 2024, was the head coach at Alabama for 17 seasons from 2007-23, winning six national championships during that span. As the head coach at Alabama, Saban also compiled a 206-29 overall record, recorded 16 10-win seasons, and won nine SEC championships. Since announcing his retirement, Saban has remained around college football, most notably through his role on ESPN's weekly show "College GameDay." As to if Saban would ever return, the answer certainly appears unlikely in the near future. Nick Saban return to coaching rumor: Daughter refutes speculation with social media post
Will Nick Saban return to coaching, or stay retired? According to his daughter, Kristen Saban, the Alabama football legend is staying retired. Ms. Saban wrote in a social media post/story to Instagram on Thursday: "He's not coming back to coaching, hate to break it to you [laughing emotion] you had your time." Rumors about a return to coaching began when former Crimson Tide quarterback and current ESPN/ABC analyst Greg McElroy said Monday that "a very much in-the-know person" seemed to believe the seven-time national champion wasn't finished coaching. McElroy's comment and subsequent reaction spread across social media, various national sports media outlets, and was a topic at SEC media days in Atlanta. Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer, Georgia's Kirby Smart, Ole Miss' Lane Kiffin and LSU's Brian Kelly all commented on the rumor of Saban possibly returning. DeBoer said Wednesday: "He's one of the greatest to ever do it, so he's earned the right to do what he wants. I think the best part of what coach Saban is doing right now is, he's still involved in the game. He brings passion to it." Saban is set to enter his second year as an analyst for ESPN's College GameDay. While Nick Saban himself hasn't addressed the rumor, someone who seems far more likely "in the know" than McElroy or his source has now done so. ESPN's Heather Dinich makes early prediction for winner of Ohio State vs. Texas
It's beginning to feel a lot closer to college football season and the ability to watch YOUR Ohio State Buckeyes. The college football preseason preview magazines are out, Big Ten media days are next week, and OSU will start its fall camp in just a couple of weeks. And while there's still more than a month to go before the kickoff of Week 1 in college football, it's never too early to look ahead to some of the big matchups, especially a titanic one that will be taking place in the 'Shoe between the Texas Longhorns and Ohio State. It's bound to be a top-five, maybe top three or two matchup to get things going, so all eyes will be on that one when it (sadly) kicks off at Noon ET on Saturday, Aug. 30. We're going to begin seeing more of this, but ESPN's Heather Dinich is already sticking her neck out and providing a prediction for one of the best nonconference games of the college football season. Spoiler alert: She likes Ohio State to turn the horns upside down and provided a reason for it during a segment on "Get Up." "Well, when in doubt, first of all, go with the home team, but Harry (Douglas) mentioned Jeremiah Smith," Dinich said. "He might not just be the best wide receiver, he might be the best player in the country, and he should absolutely be in the Heisman conversation. But 1,315 yards, 15 touchdowns, last year? That's almost a hundred yards and a touchdown per game. He's going to be the best player on the field, and while I have questions about new coordinators at Ohio State, I think they get the job done at home." Dinich's point about Smith is a good one, and I like her prediction for Ohio State to take care of business, but I think we still have to see how good the running backs perform, what kind of defense can be placed in the chamber to reload, and just how productive the new quarterback will be. All of those things have to be answered in a good way without leading to more questions to be a team as talented as Texas. There's no doubt that the Buckeyes will have the talent to win against the Longhorns; it's just a matter of whether or not they can put it all together in time. If you are like us, you can't wait to get the season started, and you can't wait for this one to kick off.
