Tearful Ons Jabeur retires from Wimbledon match due to breathing difficulties
The 30-year-old, who has endured a torrid time with injuries, required a medical timeout in the first set of the contest on Court 14.
Having been in clear distress, she managed to play on in scorching temperatures before withdrawing while trailing 7-6 (5) 2-0 to Bulgarian world number 111 Tomova.
Jabeur, who was beaten in the 2022 and 2023 finals at SW19, has plummeted to 59 in the rankings amid ongoing fitness setbacks.
A shoulder issue led to a premature end to her 2024 season and, just three months into her return, she hobbled off court in tears at this year's Miami Open after suffering a leg strain.
Tournament organisers later confirmed the Tunisian had experienced breathing issues.
'I wasn't expecting not to feel good, I've been practising pretty well the last few days but I guess these things happen and I'm pretty sad,' said Jabeur.

'It doesn't really help me with my confidence. I keep pushing myself, even though it was a very tough season for me, so I hope I can feel better and see what's going to happen.'
World number one Aryna Sabalenka eased into the second round by defeating Canadian grand slam debutant Carson Branstine in straight sets.
The three-time major winner cruised through the opening set on Court One before securing a decisive break in game 11 of a closer second en route to a 6-1 7-5 success.
Belarusian Sabalenka, who missed last year's championship due to a shoulder injury and has never been past the semi-finals, could meet British number one Emma Raducanu in round three.

'I'm super happy to be back, to be healthy and to compete at this beautiful tournament,' she said in her on-court interview.
'I was really depressed last year that I couldn't feel this atmosphere and I'm super happy with the performance. I feel like I'm in a good place.'
Marketa Vondrousova – the 2023 champion – set up a second-round clash with home favourite Raducanu by defeating American McCartney Kessler.
The 26-year-old Czech backed up her recent success at the Berlin Open with a 6-1 7-6 (3) victory over the 32nd seed, who won in Nottingham this summer.

Wimbledon organisers happy with security measures after Yulia Putintseva issue
Wimbledon organisers are confident security measures at the championships are appropriate following concerns raised by Yulia Putintseva about the behaviour of a spectator. World number 33 Putintseva complained directly to the umpire about a man, whom she described as 'dangerous' and 'crazy', during her 6-0 6-0 first-round defeat to Amanda Anisimova. The PA news agency understands the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) is happy with safety protocols at the tournament and does not plan to make any changes in the wake of the incident. During a change of ends when trailing 3-0 in the opening set of Monday's match on Court 15, Putintseva said: 'Can you take him out? I am not going to continue playing until he leaves. These people are dangerous, they are crazy.' The 30-year-old Kazakh player, who did not speak to the media after her loss, described the person as wearing green. Umpire Fabio Souza came down from his chair and spoke to three members of security staff. 'Take him out, because maybe he has a knife and he will attack,' added Putintseva, when told play would resume. Putintseva was later pictured in tears during a contest which lasted just 44 minutes. An AELTC spokesperson said: 'Following a complaint about the behaviour of a spectator at the match on Court 15, the chair umpire informed security and the matter was dealt with.' American opponent Anisimova told the BBC she believed the spectator had been saying something 'when (Putintseva) was about to serve' and added: 'I am sure that we were protected'. Player safety was in the spotlight in the run up to Wimbledon. The man given a restraining order for stalking British number one Emma Raducanu was caught trying to obtain tickets for this summer's championship when his name was flagged by the All England Club's security system. Meanwhile, British number two Katie Boulter revealed she had received death threats as she highlighted the scale of abuse aimed at tennis players online.

Oliver Crawford relished every moment of Wimbledon debut
Oliver Crawford relished every moment of his Wimbledon debut despite defeat in the first round. The 26-year-old British wild card could not find a way past Mattia Bellucci, falling to the Italian 6-7(2) 6-3 6-4 6-4 to bring an abrupt end to his SW19 debut. But despite the result, Crawford - who was born in the United States to British parents - enjoyed every moment of testing his mettle on the Wimbledon lawns. "To play in front of all my friends and family and British spectators was a dream come true," reflected Crawford. "It's always been a dream to play at Wimbledon and I'm extremely grateful and thankful for the opportunity to have played here. "From the LTA (Lawn Tennis Assocation) and all the boys and girls there and the AELTC (All-England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club) and British men's and women's tennis, I feel I've been accepted." "They've been extremely helpful in all aspects." After taking the upper hand early on, Crawford struggled to maintain his hold on the contest, with Bellucci battling back to comfortably take home the spoils. But despite the searing heat, with temperatures reaching above 30° celsius, Crawford refused to look for external excuses.
