Vijay Deverakonda's Kingdom Faces Protests For Hurting Tamil Sentiments

The Telugu film Kingdom, starring Vijay Deverakonda, faces protests in Tamil Nadu for allegedly misrepresenting Tamil identity and hurting religious sentiments.
The release of the Telugu film Kingdom, starring Vijay Deverakonda, has triggered widespread protests in Tamil Nadu, with several groups accusing the film of misrepresenting Tamil identity and hurting religious sentiments. The film, directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, premiered globally on July 31 but has since become the focus of a growing controversy.
Criticism has largely stemmed from Tamil nationalist group Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), which has taken strong exception to certain elements in the film. Members of the group claim Kingdom portrays Sri Lankan Tamils in a negative light. Further anger was directed at the film's decision to name its antagonist 'Murugan', a name associated with one of Tamil Nadu's most revered deities, Lord Murugan.
NTK condemned these creative choices, calling them deliberate and insensitive. According to the group, the film maligns both the identity and cultural history of Tamils. In response, protests were staged outside multiple theatres across the state, with party members demanding that Kingdom be banned from screening in Tamil Nadu.
One of the more serious incidents occurred in Ramanathapuram, where NTK supporters gathered outside a cinema hall to obstruct the film's screening. Protesters raised slogans and called for an immediate stop to the show. The situation escalated when police intervened to disperse the crowd, leading to a confrontation between law enforcement and demonstrators. A minor scuffle reportedly broke out during the standoff, prompting the deployment of additional forces to restore order. While no injuries have been reported, security remains heightened in the area to prevent further disturbances.
The film features Vijay Deverakonda in the lead, alongside Bhagyashree and Satyadev in key roles. Despite its star cast and scale, the film's reception in Tamil Nadu has been clouded by the controversy surrounding its content.
NTK has renewed calls for government intervention, pressing the Tamil Nadu administration to impose a ban on the film, which it claims spreads anti-Tamil narratives and disregards deeply held cultural beliefs.
As tensions persist, political observers warn that the controversy may intensify if no response is issued by the filmmakers or the censor board.
Talking about the box office collections, according to the latest figures from Sacnilk, Kingdom earned just Rs 2.25 crore on Day 5, its lowest so far. The film had kicked off with a strong opening of Rs 18 crore on Thursday, but the weekend didn't see any big jump. It collected Rs 7.5 crore on Saturday and Rs 8 crore on Sunday. With Monday and Tuesday showing a clear dip, Kingdom's total box office collection now stands at Rs 43.15 crore.
At the heart of Kingdom is Vijay Deverakonda's Suri, a simple police constable with a very personal mission. He goes undercover in Sri Lanka to take down a dangerous drug cartel, hoping it'll somehow lead him to his long-lost brother, Siva (played by Satyadev).
But things get messier than he imagined. He soon crosses paths with the menacing cartel kingpin Murugan (Venkitesh), and what follows is a high-stakes game of deception, danger, and emotional turmoil. Helping him navigate this chaos is Dr Madhu (Bhagyashri Borse), who is also working undercover.

Tollywood chokes as wage dispute triggers industry-wide strike

Hyderabad: The Telugu film industry, better known as Tollywood, has come to a standstill as the Telugu Film Employees Federation initiated an indefinite strike, halting film and web series productions across both Telugu states. The strike stems from a long-pending demand for wage revision — a 30 per cent hike for over 10,000 workers spanning 24 departments, including lighting, set design, makeup, and costumes. The current daily wage stands at Rs 1,400, unchanged for the past three years. Former Federation General Secretary Rajeswar Reddy expressed frustration, stating, 'Despite multiple meetings with producers, there has been no progress. Workers who are the backbone of sets deserve better. Until our demands are accepted in writing, there will be no return to work.' As a result, several high-budget projects have stalled. In response, the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce (TFCC) issued a statement condemning the strike and claimed that wages already exceed statutory norms. 'This disruption will cause serious financial losses. We urge producers to refrain from making separate deals with unions,' said TFCC Secretary K.L. Damodar Prasad. Adding fuel to the fire, the TFCC recently passed a resolution allowing producers to hire any skilled workers — unionized or not — intensifying the standoff. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, senior producers C. Kalyan, Allu Aravind, Suresh Babu, Mythri Ravi Shankar, and Supriya Yarlagadda met actor Chiranjeevi at his residence on Monday to seek his intervention. C. Kalyan revealed, 'Chiranjeevi garu advised against abrupt halts in shootings and expressed interest in hearing the workers' side. He promised to step in personally if the issue remains unresolved within two to three days.' Meanwhile, Telangana Cinematography Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy weighed in, acknowledging the workers' plight amid rising costs in Hyderabad. 'Salary hikes are necessary. We've appointed Dil Raju to mediate. I will also meet with workers post my Delhi visit to help facilitate a fair resolution,' he assured. As Tollywood reels from this sudden pause, all eyes are on industry leaders and government mediators to break the deadlock. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the cameras roll again or the industry faces a prolonged standstill.

Son Of Sardaar 2 Box Office Day 5: Ajay Devgn's Film Earns Over Rs 2 Crore Amid Saiyaara Craze

The comedy-drama has earned over ₹29 crore domestically in its first five days, while its global gross stands at approximately ₹38 crore. Ajay Devgn is back on the big screen with Son of Sardaar 2, delivering another dose of comedy and entertainment. Released in theatres on August 1, 2025, the film has received mixed reviews from critics. Despite Devgn's star power, the comedy-drama has had a modest start at the box office, opening at ₹7.25 crore and collecting only ₹29.46 crore over its first five days. According to Sacnilk, Son of Sardaar 2 earned approximately ₹2.35 crore on its first Monday, followed by ₹2.50 crore on Tuesday, which marked its fifth day in theatres. This brings the film's domestic net collection to ₹29.60 crore. Globally, the film has grossed ₹37.75 crore. Son of Sardaar 2 opened with a net of ₹7.25 crore and saw minor growth over the weekend, earning ₹8.25 crore on Day 2 and ₹9.25 crore on Day 3. Son of Sardaar 2 is struggling at the box office amid stiff competition from Saiyaara, starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, which is still going strong in its third week. The film is also sharing screen space with Dhadak 2 and Mahavatar Narsimha. Ajay Devgn's performance in the 2012 original Son of Sardaar was well-received, and the film reportedly grossed ₹150 crore worldwide on a ₹40 crore budget. However, the sequel has so far failed to replicate that success or draw significant crowds to theatres. Son of Sardaar 2 Release Was Delayed Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, Son of Sardaar 2 features Ajay Devgn reprising his role as Jassi, who now pretends to be a war hero in a bid to help a young couple gain their parents' approval for marriage. The ensemble cast includes Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishan, Roshni Walia, Kubbra Sait, Deepak Dobriyal, Neetu Bajwa, and Sanjay Mishra. The film also features the late Mukul Dev in a posthumous appearance. Son of Sardaar 2 is presented by Jio Studios and Devgn Films. Originally slated for release on July 25, 2025, the film was eventually pushed to August 1. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
