Fighter jets deployed in Portugal after commercial plane declares 'bomb threat'

Daily Record19-06-2025
The plane landed at Lanzarote Airport after receiving help from the Portuguese Air Force.
Air force jets were scrambled to the skies this morning in Portugal after a bomb threat was detected on a plane as it crossed national air space.
Two fighter jets were sent to help support a commercial plane, believed to be heading to Spain, as it received emergency assistance from the authorities in Monte Real.

The air force located the plane after a bomb threat was reported. It was set to divert to Faro Airport, however it managed to land at the intended place, Lanzarote Airport.

The Mirror reports that a Portuguese Air Force spokesperson said: "This morning, at 9:00 am, the Air Force activated the F-16M alert pair after a civilian aircraft declared a potential bomb threat on board when crossing national airspace, intending to divert to Faro Airport.
"For the mission, two F-16Ms took off from Air Base No. 5, in Monte Real, on permanent alert. With the F-16Ms already monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and good management of national airspace, the crew of the civilian aircraft decided to continue the flight to the destination airport, outside national territory.
"Upon leaving the national flight information region, responsibility passed to Spain, with the Portuguese F-16Ms carrying out the handover of the mission and subsequent return to Monte Real.

"The Air Force guarantees a permanent alert of F-16M for national air defense, responding to all situations to guarantee national sovereignty and good management and safety of air traffic, in strict compliance with national and international recommendations."
This comes after reports suggested the head of the RAF is set to be appointed as the new chief of the British armed forces, according to reports. Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton is thought to be in line to be the next Chief of Defence Staff.

The position is currently held by Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, who has been in the role since 2021.
According to his biography on the Government website, Sir Richard joined the RAF in 1989 as a university cadet, and served as deputy chief of the defence staff from 2019 to 2022.
The appointment comes as the Government has pledged to increase defence spending in the UK to 2.5% of gross domestic product on defence from April 2027, with a goal of increasing that to 3% over the next parliament, a timetable which could stretch to 2034.
The Ministry of Defence said: 'This is speculation. The appointment process is ongoing and any announcement will be made in the usual way.'

Clydebank man possessing knife was wearing body armour

Thomas Gallagher was drinking in the company of a pregnant woman at a property in Second Avenue when he started calling her "the devil". The 39-year-old was shouting and acting aggressively. The woman was distressed and left while barefoot, Dumbarton Sheriff Court was told. A witness saw her and could hear her crying. Another neighbour heard Gallagher threatening to "murder" her and "I hope you die". Around 1.10am, police arrived. The man answered the door, intoxicated, and started threatening officers. He was repeatedly reminded they were there to check on the welfare of everyone there. READ MORE: Drug dealer caught as phone lights up with WhatsApp texts during police search Fiscal depute Euan Nicholson said the man continued to threaten to fight officers and "said he had body armour". As additional police arrived, he then opened his tracksuit top and showed his armour and a knife in the front pouch. Gallagher, listed in court papers as a prisoner at Low Moss, also had a knuckleduster in his right trouser pocket. Police had to deploy PAVA spray to his face. He pleaded guilty in June to shouting, swearing, uttering threats and making derogatory remarks towards his partner at a property on February 8 this year. It was aggravated by being against a partner or ex. He further shouted, swore and uttered threats of violence and made homophobic remarks to two police officers. This was aggravated by prejudice relating to sexual orientation. And he admitted having a knife and having a knuckleduster. At sentencing on July 8, his defence solicitor said it was an "extremely frightening incident". "He is apologetic about his behaviour on the night in question," he said. There was not just alcohol in his client's system, but a "cocktail" that "acted as a catalyst for his behaviour". He accepted Gallagher had a lengthy record, including for past offences of violence. But he said the last one was 10 years ago. Because he had been locked up for about five months, under automatic early release, that was a 10-month sentence, explained the solicitor. Sheriff Robert Carr said: "This was an incident involving appalling behaviour on your partner. "You have a bad record. There is no alternative to a custodial sentence." He jailed Gallagher for 10 months, backdated to February 10.

Creep snared by paedophile hunters made chilling confession on livestream

David Smith was confronted by members of the group and when they asked how many times he had sex chats with children he said: "It must be in double figures." A creep who was caught out by vigilante paedophile hunters confessed on a livestream to grooming at least 10 under-age girls. David Smith was confronted by members of the group and when they asked how many times he had sex chats with children he said: "It must be in double figures." ‌ Smith, 52, used his own name and claimed to be 20 years younger when he sent pictures of his own genitals to girls he believed were 13 and 14. ‌ He was unaware he had been duped into communicating with three decoy profiles until the paedo hunters turned up on his doorstep to quiz and film him. Smith had told the 'girls' - who were adults posing as children and using adapted images of themselves for profile pics - that he was "horny" and encouraged them to carry out sex acts. Fiscal depute Jennifer Bairner told Perth Sheriff Court that Smith sent friend requests to the decoy Facebook profiles and claimed he was a hotel worker in his 30s from Scotland. He told one: "It's OK, it will be our secret" after sending a picture of his erect penis. He sent further explicit images after asking the girl if she was at school at the time. At one point he moved the conversation to WhatsApp and sent another picture of his penis to one girl "so you know it's me from this." ‌ The grooming of the girls lasted for several months until the vigilante group tracked his home address and turned up on June 10 last year to confront him. "They attended to challenge the accused," Mrs Bairner said. "It was on a Facebook livestream on the Child Protection Team UK. He admitted he was sexually attracted to children." Asked how many he had communicated with, he replied: "It must be in double figures. I'm sorry I did this. I don't go looking for children. I've not molested any children." Smith, from Perth, admitted three grooming charges as well as a charge of having child pornography showing images of children as young as three years old. Sentence was deferred for background reports and Sheriff Simon Collins remanded Smith in custody.

Brit arrested at airport after staff notice 'strong smell' coming from his luggage

A British man has been arrested in the Canary Islands after workers detected a strong smell coming from his suitcase A 27-year-old Brit was detained by police at an airport in Spain's Canary Islands after staff detected a peculiar odour emanating from his luggage. During a routine check at Lanzarote Airport's Terminal 2, which services internal flights within the island group, customs officials discovered the unusually light yet malodorous suitcase. ‌ The Guardia Civil of Spain swiftly located the owner of the bag, a British man intending to fly to Tenerife South Airport, the main transport hub of the islands. Given their experience with such matters, customs officers decided to inspect the contents of the suitcase in the presence of the Brit, suspecting he might be carrying illicit substances. ‌ While packing your 100ml liquids into a bag is typically a good way to speed your way through security, inside this Brits luggage, they located four black vacuum-sealed bags, weighing a total of four kilos, that brought his journey to an abrupt end. Inside the 27-year-old's bags, they uncovered a substantial quantity of trimmed cannabis buds, estimated to have a street value of around €7,260, or £6300, in the Canary Islands. The incident occurred on Monday, June 29, but details about the arrest were only made public by Spanish authorities two weeks later on July 14. The identity of the man has not been disclosed. The Guardia Civil apprehended the British chap along with his substantial stash of cannabis, a Class B drug in the UK. However, Spain's laws differ, where the substance is legal for recreational use, and individuals are even permitted to cultivate a small quantity for personal consumption. Nonetheless, the distribution and sale of cannabis are still prohibited nationwide. Consequently, the Briton now stands accused of public health offences and will be presented before the Court of Instruction in Arrecife for trial.
